London City Flight Path Noise Map – London City Airport (LCY)
Aircraft noise around London City in October 2026
Loudest neighborhoods near London City: Silvertown / North Woolwich, Royal Docks / Custom House, Canning Town, Beckton, Thamesmead. Quietest: Greenwich, Stratford, Dagenham. Busiest around 10 AM local time averaging 466 flights/day. Source: Flight Path Noise monitoring data, 30 days to 2026-10-08.
Does London City Airport have a curfew?
Yes — a mandatory curfew (weekdays ~10:30 PM–6:30 AM, plus a near-total weekend shutdown).
The airport has a mandatory curfew written into its planning conditions by Newham Council. Operating hours are Monday to Friday 06:30–22:30, Saturday 06:30–13:00 only, and Sunday 12:30–22:30. That means flights stop nightly in the late evening until 06:30, and there is a near-complete weekend shutdown from 1 PM Saturday until 12:30 PM Sunday — roughly 24 hours with no scheduled flights. A cap of six aircraft movements also applies in the first half-hour (06:30–06:59).
London City Airport (LCY/EGLC) sits on a narrow finger of land between two former docks in the Royal Docks of Newham, barely 11 km east of the City of London and surrounded on all sides by dense residential east London. Its single 1,508 m runway forces a remarkably steep 5.5-degree approach — roughly double a normal glideslope and the steepest published approach of any international airport — so jets stay clear of Heathrow’s overhead airspace and the towers of Canary Wharf. Because the airport is wedged into the city with no over-water buffer, every arrival and departure passes low over homes. Since concentrated RNAV flight paths were introduced in 2016 the noise has been funnelled into narrow corridors, sending complaints sharply higher. The saving grace, unique among London airports, is a mandatory curfew and a near-total weekend shutdown written into its planning permission.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
London City has just one runway, 09/27 (1,508 m physical length, with reduced declared distances of roughly 1,199 m). Runway 27 points west toward the City and Canary Wharf; Runway 09 points east toward Barking and Beckton. Because the airport is hemmed in by housing on every side and uses tightly concentrated flight paths, exposure is less about distance from the airport and more about whether your street sits under one of the repeated corridors.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Silvertown / North Woolwich | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Abeam the runway, under both thresholds on every operation |
| Royal Docks / Custom House | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | On the perimeter under the dominant Runway 27 corridor |
| Canning Town | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Just off the Runway 27 (west) end; steep approach and low climb |
| Beckton | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Off the Runway 09 (east) end; low traffic when easterly |
| Thamesmead | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Under the Runway 27 final approach across the river (~70% of days) |
| Bow | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Under the concentrated westerly departure climb corridor |
| Plumstead / Woolwich | ✈︎✈︎ | Near the approach corridor, slightly off the tightest line |
| Leyton / Leytonstone | ✈︎✈︎ | On the northbound departure track from Runway 27 ops |
| Wanstead | ✈︎✈︎ | Under the westerly-departure turn corridor (named by HACAN East) |
| Barking | ✈︎✈︎ | Near the easterly (Runway 09) departure track |
| Isle of Dogs / Canary Wharf | ✈︎✈︎ | Close to the western line; aircraft pass nearby but higher |
| Greenwich | ✈︎ | Off the main concentrated corridors; intermittent only |
| Stratford | ✈︎ | Generally off the tightest departure lines |
| Dagenham | ✈︎ | Under easterly climb only, the minority of the time |
If aircraft noise is your priority, the practical thing to understand is that London City’s corridors are narrow and repeated, not a broad cone. Streets directly under the Runway 27 approach (Thamesmead, Canning Town, the Royal Docks) or the westerly departure climb (Bow, Leyton, Leytonstone, Wanstead) see the most consistent overflight, while addresses just a few hundred metres to the side can be markedly quieter. Areas south of the river off the main lines (Greenwich) and parts of Stratford catch only intermittent traffic. Because the pattern is so concentrated, the only reliable way to judge a specific flat or house is to drop a pin on the map above.
Flight patterns and runway use
London’s prevailing wind is south-westerly, so Runway 27 (operations to and from the west) is in use roughly 70% of the time. On westerly (27) operations, arrivals descend from the east — crossing over Thamesmead and Belvedere and the river — while departures climb out westward then turn, tracking over Bow, Leyton, Leytonstone, Wanstead, Barkingside and Collier Row, with some turning north over South Woodford.
When the wind swings round to the east, the airport flips to Runway 09 (the minority of the time). Easterly arrivals route in from the south-east over Sidcup, Mottingham, Catford, Dulwich, Herne Hill, Brixton, Stockwell and Vauxhall/Oval before crossing the Thames into Tower Hamlets, while departures climb east over Barking Reach, Dagenham and southern Havering.
The defining feature is the 5.5-degree steep approach — one of the steepest scheduled-airline approaches anywhere — adopted both to reduce noise over the dense surroundings and to keep aircraft beneath Heathrow’s airspace and clear of the Canary Wharf towers. Since February 2016, concentrated RNAV (PBN) flight paths have routed traffic along narrow repeated tracks. This was intended to reduce the total area overflown, but it intensified noise for everyone directly underneath and drove a large rise in complaints. Crucially, given the inner-city location, there is no over-water routing of any substance — unlike coastal airports, London City cannot send its traffic out to sea.
The route-density layer on the map above shows this clearly: a tight bright line running east-west through the Royal Docks, splaying into the departure turns over Bow and the north-east London suburbs, with the approach line reaching across the river to Thamesmead.
When is it quietest?
London City’s planning-condition restrictions shape the week more sharply than at almost any other London airport:
- Weekday nights (22:30–06:30): curfew — no scheduled flights. A guaranteed quiet window every night.
- Weekday early morning (06:30–06:59): the day begins, but capped at six movements in this first half-hour.
- Weekday daytime (07:00–22:00): the busy period, with morning and evening business-travel peaks.
- Saturday morning (06:30–13:00): operations run, then stop.
- Saturday afternoon through Sunday lunchtime (13:00 Sat – 12:30 Sun): near-total shutdown — roughly 24 hours with no scheduled flights.
- Sunday (12:30–22:30): a later start than weekdays, then the usual evening curfew.
That weekend closure is the single biggest difference between London City and the rest of London’s airports, and Newham Council reaffirmed it by rejecting the airport’s 2023 bid to extend Saturday operations and ease early-morning limits. The other variable is wind: a shift from westerly to easterly flips the whole operation, suddenly moving traffic from the Bow/Wanstead departure corridor and the Thamesmead approach onto the Beckton, Barking and Tower Hamlets lines instead.

How to check noise at your specific address
Because London City’s corridors are so concentrated, a postcode-level guess isn’t enough — the map above answers “is this spot loud?” for any individual street. Three steps:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
- Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.
The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) make the single-runway, dual-corridor pattern obvious — a tight east-west spine through the Royal Docks with departure turns fanning into north-east London. Addresses under the Runway 27 approach or the westerly departure climb will read hot; those just off the line, or south of the river away from the corridors, typically fall into the quieter zone. And whatever the daytime reading, the nightly curfew and weekend shutdown handle the overnight and Saturday-afternoon quiet on their own.
Frequently asked questions
- Is London City Airport loud, and is it noisy living nearby?
- It depends almost entirely on which flight corridor your address sits under. London City is wedged into dense inner-east London with no over-water buffer, so every arrival and departure passes low over homes. Suburbs directly under the steep approach and departure climb — Silvertown, North Woolwich, the Royal Docks, Canning Town, Beckton and Thamesmead — get consistent low overflight. Since concentrated RNAV flight paths were introduced in 2016, the noise is funnelled into narrow repeated corridors, so two streets a few hundred metres apart can have very different experiences. Drop a pin on the map above to see your specific street.
- What time do flights stop at London City Airport?
- On weekdays the last scheduled flights operate by 22:30 (10:30 PM), after which there is a nightly curfew until 06:30 the next morning — so London City effectively has no scheduled night flights. On Saturdays the airport closes at 13:00 (1 PM) and stays shut until 12:30 PM Sunday. This is one of the strictest operating regimes of any London airport.
- Why do planes approach London City so steeply?
- London City uses a 5.5-degree glideslope — roughly double the standard 3-degree approach and the steepest published approach of any international airport. The steep angle exists for two reasons: to keep arriving aircraft above Heathrow's overhead airspace and clear of the Canary Wharf towers, and to reduce noise over the dense surrounding neighbourhoods by keeping planes higher for longer. Only specially certified aircraft and trained crews are permitted to operate there.
- Which way do planes fly — over Thamesmead, or over Wanstead and Leytonstone?
- Both, depending on the wind. London's prevailing wind is south-westerly, so Runway 27 (operations to and from the west) is used about 70% of the time. On Runway 27, arrivals descend from the east, crossing the river over Thamesmead and Belvedere, while departures climb out west then turn over Bow, Leyton, Leytonstone, Wanstead and beyond. When the wind swings easterly, Runway 09 is used: arrivals route in over Tower Hamlets and departures climb east over Barking Reach and Dagenham.
- Is there a lot of plane noise in Silvertown, Canning Town or Beckton?
- Yes — these are among the most affected areas. Silvertown and North Woolwich sit immediately south of and abeam the runway, under both thresholds, so they get low overflight on every operation regardless of direction. Canning Town and the Royal Docks sit just off the Runway 27 (west) end and are under the steep approach and low departure climb on the dominant westerly flow. Beckton sits off the Runway 09 (east) end and is most affected when the airport operates easterly. Use the pin-drop map above for your exact street.
- Can I get a quiet weekend near London City Airport?
- Largely yes, and this is the airport's biggest noise advantage. The mandatory weekend closure from 1 PM Saturday to 12:30 PM Sunday gives residents around 24 hours with no scheduled flights — a genuine respite window most London airports don't offer. Newham Council rejected the airport's 2023 bid to extend Saturday operations and ease early-morning limits, so the Saturday-afternoon shutdown remains in place.
- How do I report aircraft noise from London City Airport?
- Noise enquiries and complaints go to the airport's Flight Evaluation Unit via the London City Airport environment pages (londoncityairport.com/corporate/environment/enquiries-and-complaints). The campaign group HACAN East also tracks flight-path concerns for affected residents. Logged complaints feed into the airport's noise monitoring and the planning conditions overseen by Newham Council.
