Lima Flight Path Noise Map – Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM)
Aircraft noise around Lima in October 2026
Loudest neighborhoods near Lima: Callao Cercado (Santa Rosa, Gambetta Baja), Bellavista, La Perla. Quietest: Pueblo Libre, Mi Perú, Jesús María, San Isidro, Santa Rosa (distrito). Busiest around 10 AM local time averaging 554 flights/day. Source: Flight Path Noise monitoring data, 30 days to 2026-10-17.
Does Lima Airport have a curfew?
No — Lima has no formal curfew.
Jorge Chávez operates 24 hours and has no mandatory night curfew — it became Peru’s first airport to run two runways around the clock in December 2025. Residents report roughly 25 movements during night and early-morning hours. Peru’s noise standard (Decreto Supremo Nº 085-2003-PCM) sets residential limits of 60 dB by day and 50 dB at night, but these are environmental quality standards, not operating limits, and independent measurements have recorded aircraft passes of 70–80 dB.
Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM/SPJC) is unusual among major international gateways for sitting almost on the Pacific shoreline in dense, working-class Callao, only about 11 km from central Lima, with virtually no buffer between the field and the housing around it. Its two parallel runways run roughly north-south (16/34), so the southern thresholds and the approach and departure tracks pass directly over Bellavista, La Perla, Callao Cercado and on into San Miguel. The defining fact here is that the noise story is essentially brand-new: the much larger new passenger terminal opened on 1 June 2025, and the jump in flight frequency triggered an immediate wave of complaints about sleep-disrupting night departures. There is no curfew — locals report aircraft every 5–10 minutes and roughly 25 movements during the night, with independently measured passes of 70–80 dB against a national nighttime limit of 50 dB.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
Jorge Chávez runs two parallel runways hugging the coast at Callao: 16L/34R (3,507 m, the original main runway, ILS-equipped on 16L) and 16R/34L (3,480 m, the newer second runway built further toward the sea). Both are oriented roughly 160°/340° — close enough to call north-south — and predominant operations use the 16 direction, landing from the north and departing to the south. That puts almost all the residential impact on the districts immediately south and south-east of the field.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Callao Cercado (Santa Rosa, Gambetta Baja) | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Off the southern runway ends; constant night departures |
| Bellavista | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Directly under the 16-approach / 34-departure corridor |
| La Perla | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Both upper and lower zones overflown since 2025 |
| Carmen de la Legua | ✈︎✈︎ | Near the south-eastern departure splay |
| San Miguel | ✈︎✈︎ | Newly affected; tracks fan over the coast |
| La Punta | ✈︎✈︎ | Seaward peninsula; depends on over-water turn-outs |
| Magdalena del Mar | ✈︎✈︎ | Outer edge of the widened departure corridor |
| Ventanilla | ✈︎✈︎ | Under the northern path on north-flow days |
| Pueblo Libre | ✈︎ | Further down-track; aircraft higher, noise diffuse |
| Mi Perú | ✈︎ | North of the field; off-corridor most of the time |
| Jesús María | ✈︎ | Outer fringe of climb-out tracks |
| San Isidro | ✈︎ | Largely off corridor; cruise-climb altitude |
| Santa Rosa (distrito) | ✈︎ | Far north; essentially off-corridor |
If aircraft noise is a primary concern, the practical move in Lima is south-east and inland — San Isidro, Jesús María and Pueblo Libre sit off the main departure track and catch only high-altitude, diffuse overflight. The hardest-hit band is the strip of Callao immediately south of the runways: Callao Cercado, Bellavista and La Perla. Note that exposure for the medium- and low-rated districts beyond the core three is modeled from runway geometry rather than documented complaint data; only Callao Cercado, Bellavista, La Perla and (newly) San Miguel are firmly corroborated in local reporting. If you’re looking at a specific street, drop a pin on the map above.
Flight patterns and runway use
The two runways sit side by side, parallel to the Pacific coast. Operations predominantly use the 16 direction: aircraft approach from the north over Callao and the coast, and southbound departures climb out over the 34L/34R ends and on toward Bellavista, La Perla, Callao Cercado and San Miguel/Magdalena. The 34R threshold is displaced about 610 m. Public sources don’t document a formal prevailing-wind preferential-runway scheme beyond this dominant 16-direction usage, and there is no confirmed preferential-runway noise programme.
Two separate 2025 events reshaped the footprint, and it’s worth keeping them apart. The new terminal — roughly three times the size of the old one — opened on 1 June 2025, and the associated jump in flight frequency on the existing runway drove the first wave of complaints. The second, newer runway (16R/34L) had been commissioned back in April 2023, but full simultaneous 24-hour dual-runway operation only began on 20 December 2025. Because that second runway lies further toward the sea than the original, bringing it fully into service widened the area overflown westward and brought noise to parts of San Miguel and La Perla that La República describes as tradicionalmente menos afectados — traditionally less affected.
Residents and operator LAP reference a technical aeronautical noise-mitigation committee (the Comité Técnico de Mitigación del Ruido Aeronáutico, created in 2018–2019) and the possibility of RNAV procedures to steer departures out over the ocean, but as of late 2025 no dedicated over-water or steep-approach noise-abatement routing is in public effect. A central resident demand is to concentrate departures on a single fixed route per runway rather than dispersing them across multiple districts.
The route-density layer on the map above shows the cumulative pattern: a bright corridor running south and south-east from the runway ends across Callao, with the impact band now broader toward the coast than it was before mid-2025.
When is it quietest?
Jorge Chávez has no curfew, so unlike curfew airports there is no guaranteed silent overnight window — which is precisely what residents are complaining about. The daily profile looks roughly like this:
- Overnight (roughly 11 PM – 6 AM): no respite. Residents report around 25 movements through the night, with departures and arrivals continuing into the early morning. This is the single biggest source of the 2025 complaints, especially in Santa Rosa and Gambetta Baja.
- Early morning (6 AM – 9 AM): heavy departure bank as international and domestic flights push out.
- Midday: moderate, sustained traffic.
- Evening (5 PM – 9 PM): a second peak as international long-haul arrivals and domestic returns stack up.
Because operations overwhelmingly use the 16 direction, there is no big wind-driven “flip” that suddenly relieves the southern districts the way there is at some airports — the southbound corridor over Bellavista and La Perla is the norm rather than the exception. North of the field (Ventanilla, Mi Perú) is the area that mainly gets noise only on the less-common north-flow days.

How to check noise at your specific address
The map above answers “is this spot loud?” in three steps:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
- Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.
The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) make the southbound Callao pattern obvious. Most addresses well to the south-east and inland — San Isidro, Jesús María, Pueblo Libre — fall in the quieter zone, while the strip of Callao immediately south of the runways (Callao Cercado, Bellavista, La Perla) lands firmly in the high-exposure band, day and night.
If you want to act on what you find, environmental noise complaints go to OEFA through its national reporting service SINADA at gob.pe, on the toll-free line 0800-10058, or (01) 204-9975.
Frequently asked questions
- Is there a lot of aircraft noise around Jorge Chávez Airport in Callao?
- Yes — and far more than before mid-2025. Jorge Chávez (LIM/SPJC) sits almost on the Pacific shore in dense Callao, barely 11 km from central Lima, with virtually no buffer between the runways and surrounding housing. After the much larger new passenger terminal opened on 1 June 2025, flight frequency jumped sharply, and residents now report aircraft every 5–10 minutes and around 25 movements during the night. Callao Cercado, Bellavista and La Perla, all just south of the field, are the worst affected.
- Is Bellavista noisy from aircraft?
- Yes. Bellavista sits directly under the 16-approach and 34-departure corridor, so it gets overflights all day. Urbanizations including Virú, San José, San Joaquín, Ciudad del Pescador and Stella Maris are among the most consistently affected in Callao. Drop a pin on the map above to see the exposure for your exact street.
- Why did the noise from the new Jorge Chávez get worse in 2025?
- Two separate events. First, the new terminal opened on 1 June 2025 — roughly three times the size of the old one — and the associated jump in flight frequency drove the first wave of complaints from Callao residents. Then, from 20 December 2025, both parallel runways began full 24-hour operation, with the new second runway (16R/34L) lying further toward the sea than the original. That widened the area overflown westward, bringing noise to parts of San Miguel and La Perla that were traditionally less affected.
- Which Lima and Callao districts are quietest for aircraft noise?
- Districts well east and south-east of the corridor — San Isidro, Jesús María and Pueblo Libre — sit largely off the primary departure track and only catch high-altitude, diffuse overflight. The coastal peninsula of La Punta to the south-west is mostly off-centerline too. The hardest-hit areas are immediately south of the runways: Callao Cercado, Bellavista and La Perla. Use the map above to check any specific address.
- How do I report aircraft noise from Jorge Chávez Airport?
- File an environmental complaint with OEFA through its national reporting service SINADA (Servicio de Información Nacional y Denuncias Ambientales) at gob.pe, by calling the toll-free line 0800-10058, or on (01) 204-9975. OEFA is the body that enforces Peru's noise quality standards; complaints feed into the pressure on operator LAP and the aeronautical noise-mitigation committee.
- Are night flights allowed at Jorge Chávez?
- Yes — there is no curfew, so departures and arrivals continue through the night. Residents of Santa Rosa and Gambetta Baja in Callao Cercado report constant night departures, and the lack of any quiet overnight window has been the single biggest driver of complaints since the 2025 expansion.
- Will the flight paths over Callao change to reduce noise?
- Possibly, but nothing dedicated is confirmed in public effect as of late 2025. Residents and operator LAP reference a technical aeronautical noise-mitigation committee and the option of RNAV procedures to steer departures out over the Pacific. A key resident demand is to concentrate departures on a single fixed route per runway instead of dispersing them over multiple districts, but no over-water or steep-approach noise-abatement routing has been publicly confirmed yet.
