Dallas Flight Path Noise Map – Dallas Love Field (DAL)
Aircraft noise around Dallas in October 2026
Loudest neighborhoods near Dallas: Bachman Lake / Bachman Lake West, Love Field neighborhood, Northwest Dallas (Webb Chapel / Walnut Hill). Quietest: Preston Hollow, Las Colinas / Irving, Uptown / downtown Dallas, Lakewood. Busiest around 10 AM local time averaging 1037 flights/day. Source: Flight Path Noise monitoring data, 30 days to 2026-10-17.
Does Dallas Airport have a curfew?
No — Dallas has no formal curfew.
federal law prohibits Love Field from imposing a mandatory curfew or dictating runway use while both runways are open, and the airport operates 24/7/365. The only nighttime relief is voluntary: under lease agreements, airlines minimize scheduled departures between 11 PM and 6 AM (though delays still push some flights into that window), jets and heavier aircraft are directed to the longer runway 13R/31L from 9 PM to 6 AM, engine run-ups are banned midnight to 6 AM, and overnight training flights are restricted.
Dallas Love Field (DAL/KDAL) is one of America’s most tightly hemmed-in commercial airports: it sits barely six miles (10 km) northwest of downtown Dallas, ringed on every side by dense, established residential neighborhoods, which is why its airspace is officially flagged “noise sensitive in all quadrants.” It is the busy home base of Southwest Airlines, so the noise footprint is dominated by Boeing 737 jets climbing out over rooftops in a city where homes press right up to the fence line. The two parallel runways run northwest-southeast, so noise concentrates in a corridor off each end rather than spreading evenly — and the old crosswind runway 18/36 was decommissioned and turned into a taxiway around 2016-2017 precisely because it pointed straight at nearby homes. Crucially, federal law bars Love Field from imposing a true curfew, so the only nighttime relief is a voluntary program — a fact that keeps neighborhood noise complaints a live issue at Dallas City Hall.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
Love Field has just two runways and they’re parallel, both aligned northwest-southeast: 13R/31L (the primary, longer runway at 8,800 ft / ~2,682 m, rebuilt and reopened June 2022) and 13L/31R (7,752 ft / ~2,363 m). Because both point the same way, the high-noise zones aren’t spread around the airport — they stack up off the northwest end (toward Bachman Lake) and the southeast end (toward downtown). That geometry, plus the six-mile-from-downtown location, is what makes the close-in neighborhoods so consistently affected.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bachman Lake | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Directly off the 31/13 ends on the NW corridor, under low jet tracks |
| Love Field neighborhood | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Wraps the perimeter; homes at the fence line under both flows |
| Northwest Dallas (Webb Chapel / Walnut Hill) | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | On the extended NW centerline for 13 arrivals and 31 departures |
| Lovers Lane / Inwood corridor | ✈︎✈︎ | Just N/NW along Inwood Road; turning departures and pattern traffic |
| Bluffview | ✈︎✈︎ | Borders the field on its west; climb-out turns and arrival downwinds |
| Highland Park | ✈︎✈︎ | Off centerline but under turning jet tracks; has its own complaint office |
| University Park | ✈︎✈︎ | Departure turns and arrival overflight on certain flows |
| Oak Lawn | ✈︎✈︎ | SE corridor toward downtown at moderate altitude |
| Medical District / Stemmons | ✈︎✈︎ | South along the SE flow path; climbing/descending jets |
| Preston Hollow | ✈︎ | Lateral to the main corridors; higher, intermittent overflight |
| Las Colinas / Irving | ✈︎ | West, off the alignment; more affected by DFW than Love Field |
| Uptown / downtown | ✈︎ | Far SE end of the corridor; jets higher on climb-out |
| Lakewood | ✈︎ | Well east and off-corridor; occasional high overflight only |
If aircraft noise is your priority, the pattern to remember is that risk runs along a northwest-southeast line through the field. The worst exposure is in the close-in NW neighborhoods — Bachman Lake, the Love Field neighborhood itself, and northwest Dallas around Webb Chapel and Walnut Hill — where jets are lowest. Move laterally off that line (Preston Hollow to the north, Lakewood to the east) or far down the SE end (Uptown, downtown) and overflights are higher and less frequent. The affluent enclaves of Highland Park and University Park sit east of the centerline; they catch turning jet tracks rather than direct overflight, which is why Highland Park runs its own complaint-investigation office. Drop a pin on the map above to see your specific street.
Flight patterns and runway use
Both runways are aligned about 133 degrees (the “13” ends, to the southeast) and 313 degrees (the “31” ends, to the northwest). North Texas winds are predominantly out of the south to southeast for much of the year, with strong northerly flow on frontal passages. As a result the airport commonly runs a southeast flow — landing and departing on the 13s, with arrivals descending from the northwest over the Bachman Lake area and departures climbing to the southeast over the downtown side — and switches to a northwest flow (the 31s) when winds favor it. Either way, the same close-in neighborhoods are under the action; the flow just decides whether a given area is hearing arrivals or departures.
The airport publishes formal noise-abatement procedures. Jets and aircraft over 12,500 lbs are directed to use the longer preferential runway 13R/31L between 9 PM and 6 AM, and pilots are asked to fly the manufacturer’s, FAA, or NBAA noise-abatement departure profile. Engine maintenance run-ups are prohibited between midnight and 6 AM (with a voluntary moratorium reaching back to 10 PM) and confined to a designated run-up area near the airfield center; overnight touch-and-go and training flights are restricted. There are no over-water procedures — the airport is fully landlocked. Importantly, the FAA, not the airport, controls which runway is used and where aircraft fly whenever both runways are open.
The route-density layer on the map above makes the geometry obvious: two bright, nearly overlapping corridors extending northwest (over Bachman Lake and northwest Dallas) and southeast (toward Oak Lawn, the Medical District and downtown) from the parallel runways, with density dropping off to either side.
When is it quietest?
Love Field has no mandatory curfew — federal law prohibits one while both runways are open, and the airport is open 24/7/365 — so the overnight quiet is a matter of voluntary scheduling rather than a hard rule:
- Overnight (11 PM – 6 AM): lightest traffic. Under lease agreements airlines minimize scheduled departures in this window, engine run-ups are banned, and overnight training is restricted. The main exceptions are delayed flights pushing past 11 PM, which is exactly the noise residents notice most.
- Early morning (6 AM – 8 AM): the first departure bank builds quickly as Southwest’s schedule ramps up.
- Daytime (8 AM – 4 PM): steady, sustained 737 traffic.
- Late afternoon / evening (4 PM – 9 PM): peak arrivals and departures as the day’s rotations return.
- Late evening (9 PM – 11 PM): tapers, with jets and heavies steered to runway 13R/31L under the preferential-runway rule.
A frontal passage that swings the wind from southerly to northerly will flip the flow mid-day, switching a neighborhood from hearing arrivals to hearing departures (or vice versa) — a common source of “the planes changed” complaints. How to check noise at your specific address
The map above answers the question “is this spot loud?” Three steps:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
- Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.
The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) make the parallel-runway, northwest-southeast pattern jump out. Addresses in the close-in NW neighborhoods — Bachman Lake, the Love Field neighborhood, northwest Dallas — and in the SE corridor toward downtown will read hottest; most spots well off that line land in the quieter green zone.
If you want to act on what you find, the City of Dallas Aviation Department runs the Love Field Noise Program. File complaints through the online NoiseLab/Casper portal at dal.noiselab.casper.aero or call the 24-hour hotline on 214-670-6610. Because the FAA controls runway selection and flight tracks, logged complaints are how the persistent, fence-line reality of living under Love Field’s traffic stays on the record at City Hall.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Love Field loud to live near?
- It can be, depending on where you are relative to the two parallel runways, which run northwest-southeast. The airport is the home base of Southwest Airlines, so the footprint is dominated by Boeing 737 jets, and the airspace is officially flagged 'noise sensitive in all quadrants' because dense neighborhoods press right up to the fence line. The most affected areas are off each runway end — Bachman Lake and the Love Field neighborhood to the northwest, and Oak Lawn and the Medical District toward downtown. Drop a pin on the map above to check your exact street.
- Why are planes so loud over northwest Dallas and Bachman Lake?
- Bachman Lake and northwest Dallas (Webb Chapel, Walnut Hill) sit directly under the NW corridor off the 31 departure and 13 arrival ends of Love Field's parallel runways. When the airport is in a northwest flow, jets climb out low over these neighborhoods; when it's in a southeast flow, arrivals descend over the same area. Aircraft are at their lowest and loudest here because they're only a couple of miles from the runway.
- What are Love Field's runways and which one is used at night?
- Love Field has two parallel runways aligned northwest-southeast. Runway 13R/31L is the primary, longer runway at 8,800 ft (about 2,682 m), fully reconstructed and reopened in June 2022. Runway 13L/31R is 7,752 ft (about 2,363 m). Between 9 PM and 6 AM, all jets and aircraft over 12,500 lbs are directed to use the longer 13R/31L under a preferential-runway rule, with a special noise-abatement departure profile on 13R.
- How do I report aircraft noise at Dallas Love Field?
- File a complaint with the City of Dallas Aviation Department's Love Field Noise Program through its online NoiseLab/Casper portal at dal.noiselab.casper.aero, or call the 24-hour noise hotline on 214-670-6610. Highland Park residents also have a town complaint-investigation office. The FAA — not the airport — controls runway selection and flight tracks whenever both runways are open, so persistent route concerns may ultimately involve the FAA.
- When is Love Field quietest?
- The quietest window is overnight. Although there's no mandatory curfew, airlines voluntarily minimize scheduled departures between 11 PM and 6 AM, and engine run-ups and overnight training flights are restricted, so late-night and pre-dawn traffic is light (delayed flights are the main exception). The busiest periods are the early-morning departure bank and the late-afternoon and evening arrival peaks of Southwest's schedule.
- Which Dallas neighborhoods get the least Love Field noise?
- Areas off the northwest-southeast runway alignment fare best — Preston Hollow to the north, Lakewood well to the east, and the Las Colinas/Irving edge to the west (which is more affected by DFW than by Love Field). Far-southeast spots like Uptown and downtown sit at the end of the corridor where jets are already higher on climb-out. The high-exposure zone is concentrated off each runway end. Use the pin-drop tool above to see your address.
- Does the map include all aircraft at Love Field?
- The heatmap and route-density layers reflect ADS-B-tracked traffic, which covers essentially all of Love Field's commercial fleet — overwhelmingly Southwest Boeing 737s plus business jets. A small amount of light general-aviation traffic may not be ADS-B-equipped, but it contributes little to the overall noise footprint.
