Does Perth Airport have a curfew?

No — Perth has no formal curfew.

Perth Airport (PER/YPPH) operates 24 hours a day with no legislated curfew, and is one of the few major Australian airports without one — unlike Sydney, Adelaide, Essendon and Gold Coast, which have roughly 11 PM – 6 AM curfews. Night flying is managed only through voluntary Noise Abatement Procedures (preferred runways and flight paths), not a hard ban, so residents under the approaches can hear jets at any hour.

Perth Airport (PER/YPPH) is one of the few major Australian airports that runs 24 hours a day with no legislated curfew, so residents under its approaches can hear jets through the night. Its noise footprint is shaped by an unusual crossing-runway layout: a long main runway (03/21) running roughly NNE–SSW handles most heavy traffic, while a shorter crossing runway (06/24) points its south-west end straight at dense residential Belmont and Cloverdale. Because houses sit very close to that south-west end, Airservices’ noise-abatement procedures deliberately steer arrivals away from Runway 06 and departures away from Runway 24 wherever winds allow. The airport is also in the middle of a major change — construction of a third, parallel runway (03R/21L) began in December 2025 for a planned 2028-2029 opening — which will reshape flight paths over the Swan Valley and the southern corridor. The result is a noise story driven by wind-dependent “north flow” versus “south flow” days rather than a single fixed pattern.

Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t

Perth runs a long main runway (03/21, 3,444 m) on a NNE–SSW alignment that carries most jet traffic, plus a shorter crossing runway (06/24, 2,163 m) on a NE–SW alignment whose south-west end sits within a few hundred metres of housing in Belmont and Cloverdale. A third runway parallel to the main one (03R/21L, 3,000 m) is under construction on the eastern side and will change this picture later this decade. Because the field is well inland, there is no over-water escape — all noise is overland.

Area Aircraft noise Why
Belmont ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Immediately off the 06/24 south-west end; closest dense suburb to the field
Cloverdale ✈︎✈︎✈︎ West-side suburb near the 24-departure / 06-arrival threshold
Kewdale ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Under the southern 21-departure / 03-arrival corridor; near the 06/24 end
Redcliffe ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Wedged between both runways under turning departure tracks
South Guildford ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Directly under the main 03/21 northern corridor over the Swan River
Guildford ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Core of the north-flow corridor; arrivals and departures overhead
Ascot ✈︎✈︎ Riverside, off centreline but under 24 departures and circuit traffic
Rivervale ✈︎✈︎ Within the broader south-west 24-departure spread
Bellevue ✈︎✈︎ On the northern Swan Valley corridor, farther from the threshold
Forrestfield ✈︎✈︎ South-east of the field; some departure turns and run-up noise
High Wycombe ✈︎✈︎ East of the runways near the 06/24 NE side and new-runway footprint
Maylands ✈︎ North-west fringe, generally off the main corridors
Cannington ✈︎ Wider southern 21-departure spread but well downrange and climbing
Midland ✈︎ Far end of the northern corridor at higher overflight altitudes

If aircraft noise is a primary concern, the practical move in Perth is to get clear of the two corridors that radiate north (over the Swan River and Swan Valley toward Guildford, Bellevue and Midland) and south-south-west (over Kewdale toward Cannington), and away from the tight ring of suburbs hard against the field. Belmont, Cloverdale, Redcliffe, Kewdale, South Guildford and Guildford are the most consistently affected. If you’re looking at houses or apartments in any of them, drop a pin on the map above to see your specific street’s exposure — and remember the planned third runway will shift some of this eastward toward High Wycombe and Forrestfield from the late 2020s.

Flight patterns and runway use

Perth selects runways by wind, with no single preferred direction: air traffic control points aircraft so they take off and land into the wind. Day to day the operation is described as north flow versus south flow.

In north flow, traffic heads toward and over the north — Runway 21 arrivals and Runway 03 departures route over South Guildford, Guildford, Bellevue and Midland, up the Swan Valley. In south flow, the pattern reverses: Runway 03 arrivals come in over Guildford and Bellevue, while Runway 21 departures climb out south over Kewdale, Queens Park and Cannington. A wind change during the day can flip the flow, suddenly putting one corridor under traffic that was previously routing over the other.

The crossing runway 06/24 is the sensitive one. Under Airservices’ Noise Abatement Procedures (NAP 1, Preferred Runways), all movements on the main runway plus Runway 06 departures and 24 arrivals are Priority 1, while arrivals to Runway 06 and departures from Runway 24 are Priority 2 — avoided where practicable — because Belmont and Cloverdale sit only a few hundred metres off the south-west threshold. Standard Instrument Departures and published arrival procedures keep aircraft on consistent corridors where available.

The forthcoming parallel runway 03R/21L, on the eastern side between Terminal 1 and Abernethy Road, will introduce simultaneous parallel-runway operations once it opens (planned ~2028-2029). At that point the existing main runway is redesignated 03L/21R, and noise is expected to be redistributed across the affected corridors, with more exposure on the eastern edge near High Wycombe.

The route-density layer on the map above shows the cumulative result: two bright corridors radiating north and south-south-west from the main runway, plus a shorter, lower-volume band off the crossing runway toward the south-west over Belmont.

When is it quietest?

Perth has no curfew, so unlike Sydney or Adelaide there is no guaranteed overnight quiet window — flights can and do operate through the night, and Belmont and Guildford residents may hear movements at any hour. That said, the airport still follows a clear daily rhythm:

Because runway direction is wind-driven, the time of day matters less than the wind. A suburb that’s quiet all morning on north flow can become busy by mid-afternoon if the wind backs around to a southerly and the airport switches to south flow. To see the hourly profile for a specific address — including how often each flow affects it — drop a pin on the map above.

How to check noise at your specific address

The map above answers the question “is this spot loud?” in three steps:

  1. Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
  2. Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
  3. Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.

The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) make Perth’s north–south corridor pattern and the south-west crossing-runway track obvious. Most addresses outside the ring of high-exposure suburbs (Belmont, Cloverdale, Redcliffe, Kewdale, South Guildford, Guildford) will sit in the green/quiet zone for daytime noise — but with no curfew, check the overnight figures too if night flights matter to you.

For complaints or detailed flight-path queries, contact Airservices Australia’s Noise Complaints and Information Service on 1800 802 584 or at airservicesaustralia.com.

Frequently asked questions

Is Belmont loud from aircraft noise?
Yes — Belmont is the closest dense residential area to the field, sitting immediately off the south-west end of the crossing runway (06/24). To protect Belmont and neighbouring Cloverdale, Airservices makes arrivals to Runway 06 and departures from Runway 24 the least-preferred movements, used only when wind requires it. Drop a pin on the map above to see how often that happens over your street.
What is Perth Airport's north flow vs south flow?
Perth picks runways based on wind, with no single fixed direction. In 'north flow', aircraft land and depart toward the north over South Guildford, Guildford, Bellevue and Midland (Runway 21 arrivals / 03 departures over the Swan Valley). In 'south flow', aircraft arrive over Guildford and depart south over Kewdale, Queens Park and Cannington (Runway 03 arrivals / 21 departures). Which suburbs are loud on a given day depends on the wind.
Will the new Perth runway change flight paths over my suburb?
Likely. Construction of a third, parallel runway (03R/21L) began in December 2025, with a planned opening around 2028-2029. It runs parallel to the existing main runway on the east side, between Terminal 1 and Abernethy Road, and will introduce simultaneous parallel-runway operations. That is expected to redistribute noise across the Swan Valley and southern corridors and add exposure on the eastern side near High Wycombe and Forrestfield.
Are there planes flying over Guildford?
Yes. Guildford and South Guildford sit directly under the main Runway 03/21 northern corridor over the Swan River, so on north-flow days aircraft both depart and arrive low overhead. It's one of the most consistently affected areas in Perth. Use the pin-drop tool above to see the daily flight count for a specific Guildford address.
Which Perth suburbs are quietest for aircraft noise?
Suburbs well off the two main corridors fare best — places like Maylands on the north-west fringe, and Cannington and Midland at the far downrange ends of the southern and northern corridors, where aircraft are higher. The most consistently affected suburbs are those wrapped tightly around the field — Belmont, Cloverdale, Redcliffe, Kewdale, South Guildford and Guildford. The map above lets you check any address.
How do I report aircraft noise in Perth?
Submit complaints to Airservices Australia's Noise Complaints and Information Service (NCIS) at airservicesaustralia.com or by phone on 1800 802 584. Air traffic control and noise management are a federal Airservices Australia responsibility; the airport company itself does not direct individual aircraft. Perth Airport also runs a community noise portal with flight-path information.
Does this map cover all aircraft over Perth?
Yes — Perth's commercial fleet has near-complete ADS-B coverage, so the heatmap and route-density layers reflect actual traffic accurately. The only gaps are some general-aviation traffic, much of which operates from the separate Jandakot Airport (YPJT) to the south rather than from Perth Airport itself.
