Fort Lauderdale Flight Path Noise Map – Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
Aircraft noise around Fort Lauderdale in October 2026
Loudest neighborhoods near Fort Lauderdale: Dania Beach (north Dania, near US-1), Edgewood / Croissant Park, Hollywood (north Hollywood / Hollywood Lakes), Davie (east Davie). Quietest: Wilton Manors, Oakland Park, Pembroke Pines, Sunrise. Busiest around 9 AM local time averaging 1290 flights/day. Source: Flight Path Noise monitoring data, 30 days to 2026-10-16.
Does Fort Lauderdale Airport have a curfew?
No — Fort Lauderdale has no formal curfew.
FLL has no mandatory curfew and operates 24 hours. What it has instead is a voluntary nighttime program (FAA-approved Noise Abatement Measure NA-1) asking all turbojet operators to avoid the south runway 10R/28L between 10 PM and 5 AM unless weather, safety, efficiency, maintenance or an emergency requires it. That steers most late-night traffic onto the north runway 10L/28R, but night arrivals and departures are not banned.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL/KFLL) is wedged into a tight coastal corridor between Fort Lauderdale to the north and Dania Beach and Hollywood to the south, with the Atlantic just east of the field — so the noise picture is dominated by which way the wind blows. The defining noise story here is the south runway, 10R/28L, a controversial elevated runway opened in September 2014 that was raised over US-1 and the FEC rail line. It put a new wall of jet noise directly over Dania Beach homes that had never been overflown before, triggering lawsuits, a federal noise-mitigation program, and a Part 150 study. Because FLL flies east flow roughly 80% of the time, departures climb out over the ocean while arrivals descend from the west over inland Broward, so the worst residential exposure is on the western approach paths and immediately south of the new runway. There is no mandatory curfew — only a voluntary program asking jets to avoid the south runway between 10 PM and 5 AM.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
FLL has just two parallel east-west runways: the north runway 10L/28R (9,000 × 150 ft / 2,743 m, asphalt) and the elevated south runway 10R/28L (8,000 × 150 ft / 2,438 m, concrete). The old crosswind runway 13/31 was decommissioned in 2013 during the expansion. Because both runways point the same way — east-southeast and west-northwest — exposure is almost entirely a function of how close you are to that single east-west axis. Homes on the centerline get sustained overflight; homes off it, even close ones, are far quieter.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dania Beach (north, near US-1) | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Directly south of the elevated 10R/28L; under departure climb-out |
| Edgewood / Croissant Park | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Off the north-runway ends, just north of the field |
| Hollywood (north / Lakes) | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Under the eastern extended centerline (28L/28R) |
| Davie (east) | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | On the western centerline; arrivals and west-flow departures |
| Riverside Park / Tarpon River | ✈︎✈︎ | North fringe of the north-runway tracks |
| Hollywood Hills | ✈︎✈︎ | Just south of the centerline; west-flow arrivals |
| Plantation (east) | ✈︎✈︎ | Western corridor but offset north; higher overflights |
| Cooper City | ✈︎✈︎ | Far western approach path at higher altitude |
| Dania Beach (beachside) | ✈︎✈︎ | Under the over-water departure track east of the field |
| Wilton Manors | ✈︎ | North of the airport, off the east-west corridor |
| Oakland Park | ✈︎ | Well north of the centerlines |
| Pembroke Pines | ✈︎ | South-west and off the main corridor |
| Sunrise | ✈︎ | Distant, north of the centerline; aircraft are high |
If aircraft noise is a primary concern, the practical move in Broward is to get off the east-west axis — north toward Wilton Manors and Oakland Park, or out to Sunrise and Pembroke Pines, all of which sit clear of the main corridors and only catch occasional high-altitude overflight. The consistently affected areas are the on-axis ones: north Dania Beach, Edgewood/Croissant Park, north Hollywood and east Davie. If you’re looking at a specific house there, drop a pin on the map above to see its exposure rather than relying on the neighborhood average.
Flight patterns and runway use
FLL’s operating pattern is driven by South Florida’s prevailing easterly, onshore winds. The airport runs east flow about 80% of the time: aircraft arrive from the west — descending over inland Broward neighborhoods such as Davie, Plantation and western Hollywood — and depart to the east out over the Atlantic, which keeps most departure noise over water. This is why beachside Dania Beach hears the takeoff roll but the climb itself is over the ocean.
During west flow (roughly the remaining 20% of the time, typically with westerly winds or a frontal passage), the pattern reverses: arrivals come in from over the ocean to the east, and departures climb out to the west over inland residential areas. That is when the western suburbs — Davie especially, plus Plantation and Cooper City — get the loudest events, because a departing jet on full thrust passes low overhead instead of an arrival gliding in.
The two runways split duty by time of day. The south runway 10R/28L is the main departure runway during the day, but a voluntary noise-abatement program asks all turbojet operators to refrain from using 10R/28L between 10 PM and 5 AM unless weather, safety, efficiency, maintenance or an emergency requires it — steering most nighttime operations onto the north runway 10L/28R, which sits farther from the Dania Beach homes the elevated runway overflies. Broward County also runs an informal preferential-runway-use program and an ANOMS noise-monitoring network of about 11 permanent monitors, including two in Davie, to track how the program performs.
The route-density layer on the map above shows the result: a strong, concentrated east-west band through both runways, brightest over the ocean to the east and over the inland approach corridor to the west. Off that band — to the north and out past the western suburbs — the density drops off quickly.
When is it quietest?
FLL has no curfew, so there is no guaranteed silent window the way curfew airports like Sydney have. The quietest stretch is the overnight period simply because scheduled traffic thins out — and during those hours the voluntary program shifts what traffic remains onto the north runway 10L/28R, away from Dania Beach.
- Overnight (roughly 11 PM – 5 AM): lightest traffic, and night operations are steered onto the north runway under the voluntary program. Quietest for south-of-field Dania Beach in particular.
- Early morning (6 AM – 9 AM): departure bank builds; in east flow these climb east over the water, so inland residents mostly hear arrivals descending from the west.
- Midday through afternoon: sustained, steady traffic on both runways.
- Evening arrival bank (5 PM – 9 PM): busy with returning domestic and inbound international flights descending over the western corridor in east flow.
The bigger swing for any given home is the wind, not the clock. A westerly that develops with a front will flip the airport into west flow and suddenly put Davie, Plantation and western Hollywood under departure climb-outs that were previously routing over the ocean. For your specific address, the hourly profile on the map above is the reliable answer.
How to check noise at your specific address
The map above answers “is this spot loud?” in three steps:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
- Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.
The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) make FLL’s single east-west axis obvious — a tight band through both runways with quiet falling away to the north and south. Most addresses off that axis land in the green/quiet zone. If you live on the western centerline through Davie or south of the field in Dania Beach, the report will show it, and you can file a complaint with the Broward County Aviation Department noise hotline at 954-359-2366 to have your location matched against measured flight tracks.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the FLL airport noise complaint number?
- The Broward County Aviation Department runs a noise comment hotline for FLL at 954-359-2366, and you can also file online through the airport's Noise Information page. The county operates an ANOMS noise-monitoring network of around 11 permanent monitors, including two in Davie, so complaints can be matched against actual measured flight tracks.
- Why is the FLL south runway so controversial in Dania Beach?
- The south runway, 10R/28L, was opened in September 2014 on an elevated structure raised over US-1 and the FEC rail line. It put a wall of jet noise directly over Dania Beach homes that had never been overflown before, triggering lawsuits, a federal noise-mitigation program and a Part 150 noise study. Homes immediately south of the runway sit right under the departure climb-out, which is why north Dania near US-1 is one of the most affected areas.
- Is Davie loud from planes even though it's far from the airport?
- Yes. East Davie sits roughly 9 km west of FLL but squarely on the extended runway centerline. Because the airport runs east flow about 80% of the time, arrivals descend over Davie on their way in, and when the wind flips to west flow, departures climb out over it. That sustained, on-axis overflight is why Davie hosts county noise monitors despite the distance. Drop a pin on the map above to see your street's exposure.
- Which Fort Lauderdale neighborhoods are quietest for aircraft noise?
- Areas well off the east-west runway axis are quietest — Wilton Manors and Oakland Park to the north, and Sunrise and Pembroke Pines out west, all sit clear of the primary arrival and departure corridors and only catch occasional high-altitude overflight. The loudest spots are on the axis — north Dania Beach, Edgewood/Croissant Park, north Hollywood and east Davie. The map above lets you check any specific address.
- Are there planes flying over my house west of the airport?
- Probably, if you're on or near the extended runway centerline through east Davie, east Plantation, Cooper City or western Hollywood. In east flow (the usual pattern, ~80% of the time) these western neighborhoods are under the arrival descent; in west flow the same corridor becomes the departure climb-out. Plantation and the farther-west suburbs are offset north of the centerline, so overflights there are higher and less frequent.
- Why does FLL send most departures out over the ocean?
- Because South Florida's prevailing winds are easterly, FLL runs east flow roughly 80% of the time. In east flow, aircraft take off to the east (the '28' runways become the '10' departures) and climb out over the Atlantic, keeping most departure noise over water. Arrivals in that pattern come from the west over inland Broward. The worst residential exposure therefore lands on the western approach paths and immediately south of the new runway, not on the beachside.
- Does this map show all the aircraft over Fort Lauderdale?
- It reflects ADS-B-tracked traffic, which covers essentially all the commercial jets and most business jets using FLL. The route-density and heatmap layers show the real cumulative pattern — a strong east-west corridor through both runways. A small amount of low-altitude general aviation may not be ADS-B-equipped, but it isn't the source of the jet noise residents notice.
