Does Auckland Airport have a curfew?
No — Auckland has no formal curfew.
Auckland Airport currently operates 24 hours a day with no mandatory night curfew on its single runway 05R/23L — it is the busiest single-runway airport in Oceania and handles overnight long-haul and freight movements. A 10 dB night penalty (10 PM to 7 AM) applies for noise-compliance accounting, but it is not a flight ban. Night-time restrictions are only proposed for the future northern second runway, which is not yet built.
Auckland Airport (AKL/NZAA) is New Zealand’s busiest airport and the busiest single-runway airport in Oceania, handling all of the country’s heaviest long-haul traffic on one 3,635-metre strip built largely on land reclaimed from the edge of the Manukau Harbour. The runway, 05R/23L, is oriented north-east to south-west, and because Auckland’s prevailing wind is westerly, the great majority of jets land on 23L on approach from the north-east and depart to the south-west out over the water. That geometry concentrates arrival noise over the inland southern suburbs — Papatoetoe, Otahuhu and Manukau — while departures and the quieter over-water reciprocal “05” mode push noise across the harbour. Unlike Sydney or other curfewed hubs, Auckland currently operates around the clock with no mandatory night curfew, so overnight freight and long-haul movements are a real feature of the local noise story.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
Auckland runs a single operational runway, 05R/23L (3,635 m), oriented roughly 050°/230°. There are no parallel runways and no cross runway, so almost all noise traces to one line across the landscape: inland to the north-east, and out over the Manukau Harbour to the south-west. The suburbs that sit under the inland approach to 23L bear the most consistent overflight; the waterfront south-east suburbs catch far less because most traffic there is out over water.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mangere | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Immediately north under the 05R departure / 23L approach corridor |
| Mangere Bridge | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Northern edge of the field beneath the inland end of the 05/23 corridor |
| Papatoetoe | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Directly under the 23L arrival from the north-east |
| Otahuhu | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | On the inland approach line to 23L, descending jets overhead |
| Favona | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Just north of the runway threshold, close under the corridor |
| Manukau | ✈︎✈︎ | East of the field, slightly off the 23L centreline |
| Wiri | ✈︎✈︎ | Near the approach side; arrival traffic banking in |
| Otara | ✈︎✈︎ | Inland NE; named in proposed second-runway contours |
| Clendon Park | ✈︎✈︎ | Harbour edge; partial exposure to over-water tracks |
| Weymouth | ✈︎ | Southern harbour shore, mostly overflight out over water |
| Onehunga | ✈︎ | North across the harbour, off the main runway line |
| Titirangi | ✈︎ | West of the harbour, well off the 05/23 corridor |
| Howick | ✈︎ | Far north-east, only higher-altitude arrivals |
| Pukekohe | ✈︎ | Well south near the radius edge, occasional high overflight |
If aircraft noise is a primary concern, the practical pattern in Auckland is that the inland southern suburbs under the 23L approach (Papatoetoe, Otahuhu, Otara, plus airport-adjacent Mangere and Favona) are the most consistently affected, while suburbs out toward the western and southern harbour shores (Titirangi, Weymouth, Onehunga across the water) sit clear of the main corridor. Because Auckland has no curfew, the overnight picture matters more here than at a curfew-protected airport — if you’re looking at homes under the northern approach, drop a pin on the map above to see your specific street and its hourly profile.
Flight patterns and runway use
Auckland’s prevailing wind is westerly, so the preferential runway is 23L: aircraft most often arrive from the north-east, descending over the inland southern suburbs such as Papatoetoe, Otahuhu and Manukau, and depart to the south-west out over the Manukau Harbour. Departures off 23L climb on the extended runway centreline before turning, spreading departure noise out across the harbour and toward the south-west.
When winds shift or in light-tailwind, low-traffic conditions, Airways can operate in “reciprocal” mode on 05 so that aircraft both take off and land over the Manukau Harbour, keeping noise over water rather than over housing. Much of the airport sits on reclaimed harbour land, and the over-water geometry to the south-west is itself a natural noise-abatement feature. Auckland applies standard Civil Aviation Rules Part 93 aerodrome noise-abatement procedures; beyond the wind-driven preference for 23L and the use of over-water reciprocal operations when feasible, there is no separate steep- approach or land-based preferential-runway scheme of note on the single runway.
The route-density layer on the map above shows this clearly: one bright corridor running north-east from the field (the inland 23L approach over Papatoetoe and Otahuhu) and a second band running south-west out over the harbour (departures and the over-water 05 mode). The density drops off quickly to either side of that single line, which is why exposure is so sharply concentrated compared with a multi-runway airport.
A long-delayed northern second runway — now slated for around 2038 and parallel to the existing strip — would add new noise contours and proposed night restrictions over Mangere, Papatoetoe and Otara. The airport above is the existing single runway; the second runway is not yet built and its proposed curfews do not apply to current operations.
When is it quietest?
Auckland’s defining feature is the absence of a night curfew, so unlike Sydney there is no guaranteed silent overnight window. The profile is driven by the international and domestic schedule rather than by a hard cutoff:
- Overnight (10 PM – 6 AM): not silent. Auckland handles long-haul departures, early arrivals from Asia and the Americas, and freight movements through the night. A 10 dB “night penalty” (10 PM – 7 AM) applies for noise-compliance accounting, but it is not a flight ban.
- Early morning (6 AM – 8 AM): the heavy outbound bank — trans-Tasman and Pacific departures, plus the domestic morning rush.
- Morning to midday (8 AM – 1 PM): sustained arrivals and departures, busy but spread.
- Evening arrival bank (6 PM – 11 PM): peak inbound long-haul from Asia, the Middle East and the Americas stacks up on the 23L approach, putting Papatoetoe and Otahuhu under back-to-back arrivals.
Wind direction matters as much as the clock. When the operation is in the normal westerly / 23L flow, the inland northern suburbs are under arrivals; when conditions allow over-water 05 reciprocal operations, much of that noise shifts out over the Manukau Harbour and the inland suburbs get a reprieve. A wind shift can change which side of the field is busiest within the hour.

How to check noise at your specific address
The map above answers the question “is this spot loud?” Three steps:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
- Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown that shows the overnight movements Auckland’s no-curfew operation allows.
The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) make the single-runway pattern obvious — one strong band north-east over the inland approach suburbs and one out over the harbour to the south-west. Most addresses off that line, especially toward the western and southern harbour shores, land in the quieter zone. If you want to report aircraft noise directly, Auckland Airport runs an enquiry and complaint line on 0800 466 473 (0800 4 NOISE) or 09 256 8133, overseen by the independently chaired Aircraft Noise Community Consultative Group (ANCCG).
Frequently asked questions
- Is Mangere loud from aircraft noise?
- Yes — Mangere sits immediately north of the field, under the 05R departure and 23L approach corridor, and is the suburb most directly identified with Auckland Airport noise. Because there is no curfew, overnight movements are a real part of the picture here. Drop a pin on the map above to see the exact flight count and noise level for your street.
- Why are planes always flying over Papatoetoe and Otahuhu?
- Auckland's prevailing wind is westerly, so the preferred runway direction is 23L — aircraft most often arrive from the north-east, descending over the inland southern suburbs including Papatoetoe and Otahuhu, before landing toward the south-west. That puts these suburbs directly under the standard arrival approach for most of the day. Papatoetoe is also named in the proposed second-runway curfew area.
- Which Auckland suburbs are quietest for aircraft noise?
- Suburbs off the 05/23 runway line and out toward the western and southern harbour shores see the least overflight — Titirangi, Weymouth, Onehunga across the harbour, and far-out areas like Howick and Pukekohe. Because departures and the over-water 05 mode push noise across the Manukau Harbour rather than over housing, waterfront south-east suburbs catch less than the inland approach suburbs. Use the map above to check any address.
- What does 'over-water reciprocal' operation at Auckland mean?
- In light-tailwind, low-traffic conditions, Airways can operate in reciprocal mode on runway 05, so aircraft both take off and land out over the Manukau Harbour instead of over housing. Much of the airport sits on reclaimed harbour land, and this over-water geometry to the south-west is a natural noise-abatement feature. It keeps noise over water when wind and traffic allow.
- Will the second runway make Mangere and Otara louder?
- A long-delayed northern second runway is now slated for around 2038. It would add new noise contours and proposed night restrictions over Mangere, Papatoetoe and Otara — including a curfew on use from the west between roughly 10 PM and 7 AM and an overnight curfew from the east over Papatoetoe. These proposed restrictions do not apply to today's single-runway operations.
- How do I report aircraft noise in Auckland?
- Contact the Auckland Airport aircraft noise enquiry and complaint line on 0800 466 473 (0800 4 NOISE) or 09 256 8133, or use the online form. Complaints are overseen by the independently chaired Aircraft Noise Community Consultative Group (ANCCG).
- Does this map include all aircraft over Auckland?
- The heatmap and route-density layers are built from ADS-B tracking, which captures the commercial jet fleet that drives most of the noise around Auckland Airport. A small amount of general-aviation and light traffic may not be ADS-B-equipped, but the corridors you see reflect the real pattern of airline arrivals and departures.
