Does Vienna Airport have a curfew?

Partial — no full curfew, but legally-binding night movement caps and runway closures apply.

Vienna-Schwechat operates 24 hours with no outright curfew. But legally binding, EU- and federally-approved restrictions apply. The night core period 23:30–06:30 is capped at 4,700 movements per year (with an agreed gradual reduction of 23:30–05:30 flights toward 3,000/year), and individual runway directions are closed from 21:00 to 07:00. These rules came out of the 2000–2005 mediation and are administered through the Vienna Airport Dialogue Forum, going beyond what national law required.

Vienna International Airport (VIE/LOWW), known locally as Flughafen Wien-Schwechat, is Austria’s largest airport with around 31.7 million passengers and 234,000 movements a year. Unlike many big-city hubs it sits out in flat farmland about 18 km south-east of the city centre, and its two crossing runways — 16/34 and 11/29 — fan departures and arrivals over a scattering of small Lower Austrian and Burgenland towns rather than dense city suburbs. The defining noise fact is that the airport runs 24 hours with no outright curfew, but a hard-won mediation settlement caps movements in the 23:30–06:30 night core at 4,700 per year and closes individual runway directions from 21:00 to 07:00. Those restrictions are legally binding and EU-approved, going beyond what national law required — and the much-contested third runway, which would have hugely expanded south-easterly operations, was finally abandoned by the operator in late 2025. The result is a noise footprint concentrated along the 16/34 and 11/29 corridors, with Schwechat, Fischamend and the south-eastern Vienna districts bearing the brunt.

Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t

Vienna runs two intersecting runways: 16/34 (3,600 m, 45 m wide, asphalt), oriented roughly NNW–SSE, and 11/29 (3,500 m, 45 m wide, asphalt), oriented roughly ESE–WNW. There is no third or parallel runway — the planned 11R/29L was cancelled in late 2025 — so the affected band stays fixed along these two crossing axes. Because the field sits inland, every flight path is overland; there is no over-water escape valve as at coastal airports.

Area Aircraft noise Why
Schwechat ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Airport lies within the municipality; immediately off 16/34 and 29, hosts the main noise-measurement point
Fischamend ✈︎✈︎✈︎ ~4 km east; affected by 11, 29 and 16/34 near the runway ends
Klein-Neusiedl ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Just south, under 16 paths and 11/29 traffic
Mannswörth (Schwechat) ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Wedged between the runways and the city, beneath 29 and 16 tracks
Enzersdorf an der Fischa ✈︎✈︎ South-east extended centreline beyond Fischamend
Schwadorf ✈︎✈︎ South of the field, under 16 and 11/29 in some configurations
Rauchenwarth ✈︎✈︎ South-west; exposed when 29 departures fan out
Maria Lanzendorf ✈︎✈︎ West, along the 29 departure and arrival axis
Simmering (Vienna 11th) ✈︎✈︎ Overflown by 34 departures and 16 arrivals to/from the city
Rannersdorf / Kledering ✈︎✈︎ North-west belt under the approach and departure flow
Groß-Enzersdorf ✈︎ North across the Danube; off the busiest corridors
Himberg ✈︎ South-west, off the main centrelines
Bruck an der Leitha ✈︎ ~18 km south-east on the far 11/29 axis; high-altitude only
Wiener Neudorf / Mödling ✈︎ West, mostly outside the primary corridors

If aircraft noise is a primary concern, the practical move around Vienna is to stay clear of the 16/34 and 11/29 extended centrelines — the western suburbs around Mödling and Wiener Neudorf, Himberg to the south-west, and Groß-Enzersdorf north of the Danube all sit largely outside the busy corridors and catch mostly higher-altitude traffic. The towns closest to the runway ends — Schwechat, Fischamend, Klein-Neusiedl and Mannswörth — are the most consistently affected. If you’re looking at a specific house or flat, drop a pin on the map above to see your street’s exposure.

Flight patterns and runway use

Schwechat’s flow is dominated by the two intersecting runways, with the active direction chosen by wind under a preferential-runway scheme written into the mediation settlement. Departures off Runway 29 (heading west-northwest) follow Standard Instrument Departures that turn before overflying the Schwechat noise-measurement point, deliberately steering traffic away from the most populated areas. Runway 16 sends departures and arrivals south-southeast over Schwechat and Fischamend, while Runway 34 routes traffic north-northwest toward the south-eastern edge of Vienna and Simmering. Runway 11 brings movements over the eastern and south-eastern fringe, which is why Fischamend is affected by traffic on 11, 29 and 16/34 alike.

The settlement’s most important operational lever is the closure of individual runway directions from 21:00 to 07:00, used to keep night noise off sleeping communities. Compliance with the prescribed approach and departure routes is policed retrospectively by the FANOMOS flight-track-and-noise-monitoring system, which uses multiple fixed measuring points and makes Vienna one of Europe’s more transparently governed noise regimes. Noise abatement also includes a window and door insulation programme: where continuous levels exceed 54 dB by day or 45 dB at night, the airport funds 50–100% of soundproofing costs.

The route-density layer on the map above shows the cumulative pattern as two crossing bands radiating from the field — a NNW–SSE corridor over Schwechat and Fischamend, and an ESE–WNW corridor reaching from the eastern fringe out toward Bruck an der Leitha. Far-field density drops off as aircraft climb, so the Burgenland and outer-Vienna towns see overflight only at altitude.

When is it quietest?

Vienna has no full curfew, so unlike a hard-curfew airport there is no guaranteed silent overnight window — but the night restrictions still shape the daily profile:

Wind also matters: a shift that flips the operation between the 16 and 34 ends, or onto the 11/29 axis, will suddenly move the busiest corridor — putting Fischamend or the southern villages under traffic that was previously routing elsewhere. A further voluntary night-flight pause has been under negotiation in recent action plans but is not yet in force.

How to check noise at your specific address

The map above answers the question “is this spot loud?” Three steps:

  1. Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
  2. Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
  3. Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.

The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) make the two-runway cross pattern obvious — a NNW–SSE band over Schwechat and Fischamend and an ESE–WNW band toward the eastern fringe. Most addresses well off those crossing centrelines, such as the western Mödling belt or Groß-Enzersdorf, land in the quieter zone for daytime noise. If your street sits inside the corridor, it’s also worth checking whether you qualify for the airport’s soundproofing programme, and complaints can go to Flughafen Wien’s Environment & Aviation noise line on 0810 22 33 40.

Frequently asked questions

Is Schwechat loud from aircraft?
Yes — Schwechat is one of the most consistently affected areas because the airport lies within the municipality, immediately off the 16/34 and 29 corridors. The town also hosts the airport's primary noise-measurement reference point, and departure routes off Runway 29 are deliberately turned to steer traffic away from the most populated parts. Drop a pin on the map above to see the exposure for your specific street.
Which areas near Vienna Airport are quietest?
Towns well off the 11/29 and 16/34 extended centrelines see the least overflight: Himberg to the south-west, Groß-Enzersdorf north across the Danube, and the Mödling/Wiener Neudorf belt to the west all sit largely outside the primary corridors and catch mostly high-altitude traffic. The most affected are Schwechat, Fischamend, Klein-Neusiedl and Mannswörth, which sit close to the runway ends.
Is there aircraft noise in Fischamend?
Yes — Fischamend, about 4 km east of the field, is explicitly cited as affected by movements on Runways 11, 29 and 16/34. It sits close to the runway ends on the busy eastern side, so both departures and arrivals pass nearby. Use the pin-drop tool above to see how many flights pass within 2 km of your address.
Which runways does Vienna Airport use and where does the noise go?
Vienna has two intersecting runways: 16/34 (3,600 m) running roughly NNW–SSE, and 11/29 (3,500 m) running roughly ESE–WNW. The active direction is chosen by wind under a preferential-runway scheme written into the mediation settlement. Departures on 16 head south-southeast over Schwechat and Fischamend; 34 routes north-northwest toward Vienna's south-eastern edge; 29 departures turn shortly after takeoff to spread noise. All flight paths are overland — there is no over-water option.
Was Vienna Airport's third runway cancelled?
Yes. The long-contested third runway, which would have been a parallel 11R/29L and hugely expanded south-easterly operations, was abandoned by Flughafen Wien AG, announced on 26 November 2025. The field remains a two-runway airport, so the noise footprint stays concentrated along the existing 16/34 and 11/29 corridors.
How do I report aircraft noise at Vienna Airport?
Contact Flughafen Wien's Environment & Aviation (Umwelt und Luftfahrt) noise information line on 0810 22 33 40 or via vie-umwelt.at. Compliance with prescribed approach and departure routes is tracked retrospectively by the FANOMOS flight-track and noise-monitoring system, one of Europe's more transparent noise regimes, and complaints feed into the Vienna Airport Dialogue Forum.
Can I get my home soundproofed near Vienna Airport?
Possibly. The airport runs a window and door insulation programme: where continuous noise levels exceed 54 dB by day or 45 dB at night, Flughafen Wien funds 50–100% of soundproofing costs. Whether your address qualifies depends on its measured exposure — drop a pin on the map above to gauge how much traffic passes overhead.
