Does Ho Chi Minh City Airport have a curfew?

No — Ho Chi Minh City has no formal curfew.

Tan Son Nhat operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for scheduled, charter, cargo, private and commercial flights, with no mandatory night or weekend noise restriction. Residents near the field report aircraft overhead every 3–5 minutes, day and night. (The English Wikipedia article carries a line saying the airport cannot operate between midnight and 5 AM, but that is unsupported by operator and regulator sources and is contradicted by Vietnamese operator listings that state the airport runs 24/24h.)

Tan Son Nhat (SGN/VVTS) is one of the most hemmed-in major airports on earth: its two parallel runways sit barely 6–8 km north of central Saigon, completely surrounded by dense city in Tan Binh, Go Vap, Phu Nhuan and Tan Phu. Built by the French and massively expanded by the US during the war, the airport was once on the city’s edge but is now swallowed by it, so flight paths cross rooftops at very low altitude. Handling 400+ movements a day against a capacity it long ago outgrew, the field generates near-constant noise — residents in Go Vap report aircraft every 3–5 minutes and houses that shake on departure. Because there is no operating curfew, that noise runs around the clock, which is the defining feature of this airport’s noise story and the chief reason Vietnam is building the new Long Thanh airport to relieve it.

Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t

Tan Son Nhat has two parallel runways aligned roughly ENE–WSW: 07R/25L (3,800 m, the longer runway used mainly for heavy and international departures) and 07L/25R (3,050 m, the main arrival runway). They sit only ~365 m apart, so they are operated dependently. Because the airport is entirely overland with no over-water escape route, almost every track overflies housing within the first few kilometres — and the worst-affected band runs parallel to, and directly off the ends of, the runways.

Area Aircraft noise Why
Go Vap (Wards 5, 6, 10) ✈︎✈︎✈︎ North/north-east, near the 07 runway end; officially the worst-affected area
Tan Binh — Wards 2 & 4 (Truong Son St) ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Immediately south, under both runway thresholds
Tan Binh core ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Wraps the southern/eastern boundary at low altitude
Phu Nhuan ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Close off the 25 departure climb / 07 approach line
Tan Phu ✈︎✈︎ West side, near the 25 runway end; loudest in the prevailing flow
Binh Thanh ✈︎✈︎ South-east extended track; tapering with distance
District 3 ✈︎✈︎ South-east corridor; higher-altitude overflight
District 10 ✈︎✈︎ South-easterly track, aircraft higher than close-in wards
District 12 ✈︎✈︎ North of the field under wider turns and the climb-out fan
District 1 (downtown) ✈︎ Off the main axis; aircraft already climbing
Binh Tan ✈︎ Lateral to the 25 departure track, well out
District 5 / Cho Lon ✈︎ South, off the centreline; higher, less frequent overflight
Thu Duc (west) ✈︎ Mostly off-corridor; only the 07 reversal reaches it
Hoc Mon (south edge) ✈︎ Outer fringe, only intermittent wide turns

If aircraft noise is a primary concern, the practical move in Saigon is to get off the ENE–WSW runway axis and several kilometres out: districts like Binh Tan to the south-west, District 5 / Cho Lon to the south, or the western part of Thu Duc City to the east sit clear of the worst footprint. The ring of districts immediately around the field — Go Vap, the southern Tan Binh wards, Phu Nhuan and Tan Phu — is where the impact is heaviest. If you are looking at an apartment or house there, drop a pin on the map above to see the exposure for your specific street.

Flight patterns and runway use

Both runways are oriented roughly 069/249 degrees true (ENE–WSW). The predominant configuration is “25”: arrivals land on 25R and departures use 25L, so aircraft approach from the west-southwest and climb out toward the west-southwest. This is why the southern Tan Binh wards, Phu Nhuan and Tan Phu — all to the south and west — carry so much of the load.

During the easterly/east-wind season the flow reverses to “07”: departures use 07L and arrivals come in on 07R, sending traffic over the eastern side toward Go Vap, Tan Phu’s neighbours and the north-east. Because the two runways lie only ~365 m apart, they cannot be worked independently, which concentrates rather than spreads the movements — and the airport is so slot-constrained that the traffic stacks up tightly through the day.

There are no over-water departure options here. Unlike Sydney (Botany Bay) or Brisbane (an over-water runway), Tan Son Nhat is ringed by housing on every side, so noise-abatement work focuses on how aircraft climb rather than where they go. Academic studies (IJAST) model ICAO NADP 1 and NADP 2 thrust-cutback climb procedures off 25L to shrink the footprint, since the highest noise levels occur in a band parallel to and directly off the runway ends rather than far out along the track.

The route-density layer on the map above shows the cumulative pattern: a tight bright corridor extending west-southwest from the runways in the usual “25” flow, with a secondary fan to the east-north-east that lights up whenever the wind reverses to “07”.

When is it quietest?

The honest answer for Tan Son Nhat is: there is no genuinely quiet window. With no curfew and chronic congestion, the airport runs 24/24h, and residents near the field describe aircraft “every 3–5 minutes, day and night.” That round-the-clock operation is the single biggest difference between this airport and curfew-bound hubs like Sydney (11 PM–6 AM) or London Heathrow.

That said, the intensity still varies through the day:

A wind shift matters more than the clock. A switch from the prevailing “25” flow to the easterly “07” flow suddenly puts Go Vap and the north-eastern districts under traffic that was previously routing to the west-southwest. For the hourly profile at your address, drop a pin on the map above.

How to check noise at your specific address

The map above answers the question “is this spot loud?” Three steps:

  1. Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
  2. Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
  3. Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.

The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) make the pattern obvious: a dense band running west-southwest off the runways, swinging east-north-east toward Go Vap when the wind reverses. Because Tan Son Nhat is so tightly boxed in by the city, most addresses within the inner ring of districts — Go Vap, the southern Tan Binh wards, Phu Nhuan and Tan Phu — will register significant exposure, and unlike curfew airports there is no overnight reprieve to count on. Getting several kilometres off the runway axis is what makes the difference; the map will show you exactly where that line falls for your street.

Frequently asked questions

Is Go Vap loud from planes?
Yes — Go Vap is officially one of the worst-affected districts. It sits just north and north-east of the airport near the eastern (07) runway end, and residents in Wards 5, 6 and 10 report planes skimming rooftops and houses that shake on departure. Because there is no curfew, the noise runs around the clock. Drop a pin on the map above to see exposure for your specific street.
Which Ho Chi Minh City districts are under the Tan Son Nhat flight path?
The most exposed are Go Vap (north/north-east), the southern wards of Tan Binh (immediately south, around Truong Son St), Phu Nhuan (south-east) and Tan Phu (west, near the 25 runway end). Because the airport is entirely overland and ringed by dense housing, almost every departure overflies residential districts within the first few kilometres. The map above shows the corridors.
Which areas of Saigon are quietest for aircraft noise?
Districts well off the ENE–WSW runway axis and several kilometres out fare best: Binh Tan to the south-west, District 5 / Cho Lon to the south, the western part of Thu Duc City to the east, and the outer Hoc Mon fringe to the north-west. Central District 1, though only ~7 km away, is off the main axis and sees aircraft already climbing, so it is audible but not under the worst footprint.
Which way do planes take off and land at Tan Son Nhat?
Both runways run roughly ENE–WSW (069/249 degrees). The usual configuration is '25': arrivals land on 25R and departures use 25L, so aircraft approach from and climb out toward the west-southwest. During the east-wind season the flow reverses to '07', sending traffic over the eastern side toward Go Vap and the north-east. The two runways sit only ~365 m apart, so they are operated dependently.
Is it noisy living in Phu Nhuan or Tan Binh near the airport?
Yes. The southern wards of Tan Binh wrap the airport boundary directly under low arrival and departure altitudes, and Phu Nhuan lies close off the 25 departure climb and 07 approach line. Both are dense inner districts that are overflown at low level throughout the day and night. If you are looking at an apartment there, use the pin-drop tool above to check the exact address.
Why is Tan Son Nhat so noisy compared with other big-city airports?
Two reasons. First, it is one of the most hemmed-in major airports on earth — its runways sit barely 6–8 km north of central Saigon, completely surrounded by dense city, with no over-water departure option, so tracks cross rooftops at very low altitude. Second, it has no curfew and is severely congested, handling 400+ movements a day around the clock. That round-the-clock overland traffic is the chief reason Vietnam is building Long Thanh to relieve it.
How do I report aircraft noise at Tan Son Nhat?
The airport is operated by Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV); the aviation regulator is the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV). You can reach ACV via vietnamairport.vn/en/contact or +84 28 3848 5383. Note that, unlike some Western hubs, there is no dedicated public noise-complaint hotline or published curfew to fall back on.
