Rome Flight Path Noise Map – Rome Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO)
Aircraft noise around Rome in October 2026
Loudest neighborhoods near Rome: Isola Sacra, Fiumicino (town centre), Focene, Fregene. Quietest: Dragona / Dragoncello, Acilia, Ponte Galeria, Aranova, Passoscuro. Busiest around 11 AM local time averaging 1134 flights/day. Source: Flight Path Noise monitoring data, 30 days to 2026-10-19.
Does Rome Airport have a curfew?
Partial — no outright curfew (FCO runs 24 hours), but a mandatory night regime closes the western runway 11 PM – 6 AM.
Rome Fiumicino has no night curfew — it operates around the clock, unlike Rome’s other airport, Ciampino, which bans night flights outright. What Fiumicino has instead is a mandatory night preferential-runway regime set out in the AIP. The western runway 16R/34L — the one nearest Focene, Fregene and Maccarese — is closed to almost all operations from roughly 11 PM to 6 AM local time, with planning cut-offs that push evening traffic off it even earlier; exceptions are limited to operational, weather or safety reasons. Overnight traffic is concentrated on the eastern runway 16L/34R, closer to the terminals and to Parco Leonardo. The result is a quiet night for the western coastal towns but continued overnight movements on the airport’s eastern side. On top of the runway regime, EU rules transposed into Italian law (Legislative Decree 13/2005) phased out the noisiest “marginally compliant” Chapter 3 jets, and noise-abatement climb and idle-reverse-thrust procedures apply at all hours. These are binding operational directives, not a statutory curfew — hence “partial”.
Rome Fiumicino “Leonardo da Vinci” Airport (FCO/LIRF) is Italy’s busiest airport, and its noise story is written by coastal geometry. Two very widely spaced parallel runways — 16L/34R and 16R/34L sit a full 4 km apart — run north-south along the Tyrrhenian shore, while the crosswind runway 07/25 is used almost exclusively for westward takeoffs straight out over the sea. That over-water bias spares most of Rome proper, 25 km to the east, but concentrates the noise on the towns wedged between the runways and the beach: Fiumicino town, Isola Sacra, Focene and Fregene, where ARPA Lazio’s monitors have repeatedly recorded persistently high levels. Unlike Ciampino across the city, FCO operates around the clock — but a mandatory night runway regime shuts the western runway from 11 PM to 6 AM, pushing overnight traffic onto the eastern side of the field.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
Fiumicino’s two active parallels (16L/34R and 16R/34L, both 3,902 m) and the 3,300 m crosswind runway 07/25 define three noise corridors: a southern one over Isola Sacra and the Tiber mouth, a northern one over the Maccarese farmland toward Fregene, and a western one from runway 25 departures rolling out past Focene before climbing over the water. A former centre runway (16C/34C) is closed and now serves as a taxiway.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Isola Sacra | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Under 16L departures and 34R arrivals, between runways and Tiber mouth |
| Fiumicino (town) | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Beside the field; 34 approaches along the coast plus ground noise |
| Focene | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Immediately west of 16R/34L and near the runway 25 departure track |
| Fregene | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Under the western runway’s northern flows |
| Maccarese | ✈︎✈︎ | Under final approach to the 16s from the north |
| Parco Leonardo | ✈︎✈︎ | Beside eastern runway 16L/34R — the night runway |
| Lido di Ostia | ✈︎✈︎ | Under and beside the 34 arrival stream up the coast |
| Ostia Antica | ✈︎✈︎ | Beneath southern arrival/departure corridors |
| Dragona / Dragoncello | ✈︎ | Higher-altitude traffic joining the southern flows |
| Acilia | ✈︎ | Off the main corridors; high-altitude vectoring only |
| Ponte Galeria | ✈︎ | Off-axis from the north-south runways |
| Aranova | ✈︎ | Occasional northern traffic at altitude |
| Passoscuro | ✈︎ | Well beyond the runway axes |
| Casal Palocco | ✈︎ | Edge of the pattern, off the approach axes |
The dividing line is stark. West of the field, exposure is among the highest of any Italian airport community — Focene’s closest streets are barely a kilometre from runway 16R/34L. East of roughly Parco Leonardo and Ostia Antica, altitude does the work and exposure falls off quickly; by Acilia and Casal Palocco aircraft are vectoring at height rather than crossing low. If you’re weighing an address anywhere on the Fiumicino–Ostia coastal strip, drop a pin on the map above and check the street, not the town — a couple of kilometres sideways off the runway axis makes a large difference here.
Flight patterns and runway use
Prevailing winds favour sea-facing operations. Departures very frequently roll on runway 25, climbing straight out over the Tyrrhenian — the airport’s main noise-abatement asset, and the reason FCO’s footprint on Rome itself is modest for an airport of its size. Arrivals land southbound on the 16s (approaching over the Maccarese farmland from the north) or northbound on the 34s (tracking up the coast past Ostia and Isola Sacra). The 4 km separation between the parallels allows fully independent simultaneous operations, which spreads traffic across both corridors during the day.
Published noise-abatement measures include noise-abatement initial-climb profiles on every runway except 25 (which points at open water), reverse thrust limited to idle except for safety, and a circling restriction keeping the 34L downwind east of the airport at or above 2,000 ft. At night the picture changes completely: the AIP closes the western runway 16R/34L to almost all operations from about 11 PM to 6 AM local, with planning cut-offs that force evening flights to file for the eastern runway even earlier. Overnight movements therefore concentrate on 16L/34R, nearest the terminals and Parco Leonardo — a deliberate trade that buys Focene, Fregene and Maccarese a quiet night.
ADR runs a continuous noise-monitoring network integrated with radar tracks — the first of its kind in Italy — and manages flight paths jointly with ENAV, while ARPA Lazio’s CRISTAL centre monitors independently and publishes monthly acoustic bulletins.
When is it quietest?
FCO has no curfew, so the daily rhythm is set by schedules and the night runway regime rather than a hard stop:
- 11 PM – 6 AM: far fewer movements, all concentrated on the eastern runway 16L/34R. Effectively silent in Focene, Fregene and Maccarese; residual noise near Parco Leonardo and the southern approach over Isola Sacra.
- 6 AM – 9 AM: the morning wave — intercontinental arrivals and the first short-haul departure banks. Both parallels active.
- Midday: sustained, moderate traffic typical of a hub running near capacity.
- 5 PM – 9 PM: evening peak of European arrivals and departures; the busiest window for the coastal towns.
- 9 PM – 11 PM: tapering, with traffic progressively shifting off the western runway as the night cut-offs approach.
Wind matters too. On southerly-flow days the 16s carry arrivals in over Maccarese and Fregene’s inland side; on northerly flow the 34s bring arrivals low along the Ostia–Isola Sacra shoreline instead. The same address can have noticeably different weeks depending on which regime dominates.
The fourth runway question
The long-term wildcard is the ENAC/ADR Master Plan to 2046, an ~8–9 billion euro programme that would add a fourth runway east of the existing field and lift capacity toward 500,000 annual movements. ADR argues the eastward shift would cut overflights of Isola Sacra, Fiumicino, Focene and Fregene by large margins; the local FuoriPista committee and Legambiente contest the plan, and a 2021 Lazio TAR ruling barred new infrastructure inside the Litorale Romano state nature reserve. That obstacle is now being actively worked around — in January 2026 the Fiumicino comune approved re-drawing the reserve’s boundaries to make room for the runway, with government backing. Whatever the outcome, it will reshape where this map’s corridors sit over the coming decade.
How to check noise at your specific address
The map above answers “is this spot loud?” in three steps:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
- Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.
The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) make the coastal geometry obvious: two bright north-south bands along the shore, a western fan from runway 25 departures heading out to sea, and rapid fall-off inland toward Rome. Most addresses east of Ostia Antica land in the quiet zone; the coastal strip from Isola Sacra to Fregene is where street-level checking genuinely pays off.
Frequently asked questions
- Which towns get the most aircraft noise from Fiumicino airport?
- The towns wedged between the runways and the Tyrrhenian coast — Isola Sacra, Fiumicino town, Focene and Fregene — carry the heaviest load. They sit under the 16 departure and 34 arrival streams of the two parallel runways, and ARPA Lazio's monitoring around the airport has repeatedly recorded persistently high levels there. Central Rome, 25 km to the east, is essentially unaffected. Drop a pin on the map above to see the exact picture for any address.
- Is Fregene affected by aircraft noise?
- Yes. Fregene sits under the northern flows of the western runway 16R/34L, about 8 km northwest of the field, and is one of the four coastal communities ARPA Lazio and local campaigners flag most often. The main relief is at night, when that runway closes and traffic shifts to the eastern runway. Notably, ADR's own fourth-runway plan projects roughly half as many overflights of Fregene — a tacit acknowledgment of the current load.
- Do planes from Fiumicino fly over central Rome?
- Rarely at low altitude. FCO is on the coast ~25 km west-southwest of the centre, its main runways run north-south along the shoreline, and most departures use runway 25 straight out over the sea. Arrival streams track up the coast or over the Maccarese farmland, not over the historic centre. Rome districts that do hear traffic are the western/coastal ones — Ostia, Acilia, Casal Palocco — mostly at higher altitude.
- Why do most takeoffs at Fiumicino head out over the sea?
- Prevailing winds favour the westward crosswind runway 25, which points straight at the Tyrrhenian — so a large share of departures climb over water, where the noise affects no one. It is the airport's single biggest noise-abatement asset, and it is also why runway 25 is the only runway exempt from the published noise-abatement initial-climb profile. The trade-off is that Focene, near the runway 25 track, still hears the start of those departure rolls.
- What is the fourth runway at Fiumicino and will it change the noise?
- ENAC and Aeroporti di Roma's Master Plan to 2046 (an ~8–9 billion euro programme presented in 2021) would add a fourth runway east of the current field and push capacity toward 500,000 annual movements. ADR claims the eastward shift would dramatically cut overflights of Isola Sacra, Fiumicino, Focene and Fregene. Opponents — the local FuoriPista committee and Legambiente — dispute this, and a 2021 Lazio TAR ruling blocked new infrastructure in the Litorale Romano nature reserve; in January 2026 the Fiumicino comune approved re-drawing the reserve's boundaries to make room for it, so the project is actively moving again.
- Which is worse for noise — Fiumicino or Ciampino?
- They are different problems. Ciampino is smaller but sits in dense southeastern suburbs, so fewer flights affect more people per movement — which is why it has a hard night ban. Fiumicino is far busier (Italy's busiest airport) but coastal, with most departures over the sea; its impact concentrates on the nearby coastal towns rather than Rome proper, and it runs 24 hours. See our separate Ciampino page for that side of the city.
- Is Parco Leonardo noisy at night?
- It hears more night traffic than anywhere else around the airport. Because the western runway closes overnight, the night preferential-runway regime concentrates all overnight arrivals and departures on the eastern runway 16L/34R, which is the runway nearest Parco Leonardo. Daytime exposure is moderate — the district is beside the runway rather than under a final approach. Use the pin-drop tool above to see the hourly breakdown.
- How do I complain about aircraft noise from Fiumicino?
- Aeroporti di Roma manages the airport's noise-monitoring network (integrated with radar tracks) and takes noise and environment feedback via adr.it or the switchboard on +39 06 65951. ARPA Lazio independently monitors the airport through its CRISTAL airport-acoustics centre and publishes monthly acoustic bulletins, which are the reference documents local committees cite.
