Does Venice Airport have a curfew?
Partial — the airport closes to normal operations midnight to 4 AM, but there is no full statutory night ban.
Venice Marco Polo does not have an absolute overnight ban. Italy’s national 23:00–06:00 night-flight restriction (DPR 476/99) was annulled by TAR Lazio (sentenza 10119/2014) after the airport operator SAVE challenged it, on the grounds it had been imposed pre-emptively without first establishing the actual noise situation. What remains is a physical closure to normal operations from 00:00 to 04:00 under ENAC ordinance 6/2015 — state, medical and emergency flights are exempt. Because the closure is only four hours and the wider 23:00–06:00 window carries no hard ban, late-evening and early-morning movements continue, and regional monitoring by ARPAV has repeatedly recorded night-time exceedances of the 50 dB(A) limit in the closest lagoon-edge villages such as Tessera, Campalto and Ca’ Noghera.
Venice Marco Polo (VCE/LIPZ) sits right on the northern rim of the Venetian Lagoon at Tessera, about 7.5 km from the historic city. Its geometry is defined by water: the main runway 04R/22L runs north-east to south-west along the shoreline, so most approaches descend across the open lagoon from the south-west and departures climb straight out over the water. Because so much of the arrival and departure track lies over the lagoon rather than over houses, the heaviest ground exposure concentrates in a handful of lagoon-edge districts — Tessera itself, Campalto, Favaro Veneto and Ca’ Noghera — plus the mainland corridor toward Dese, Marcon and Quarto d’Altino under the north-eastern departures. The airport’s night regime has also been legally contested — the national ban was struck down in 2014 — so unlike many European hubs Venice keeps no full overnight ban, only a four-hour closure to normal operations.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
Venice Marco Polo runs on a single active runway. The main strip, 04R/22L, is 3,300 m long; a parallel secondary strip, 04L/22R (~2,780 m), sits on the same north-east/south-west alignment but is used almost entirely as a taxiway — the two cannot be operated at the same time, so scheduled traffic is concentrated on 04R/22L. That single lagoon-hugging corridor decides who hears aircraft and who doesn’t.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tessera | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Airport village; directly in the 04R/22L threshold environment |
| Campalto | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Lagoon edge under the south-western 04R/22L track |
| Ca’ Noghera | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Just east of the field, under low-altitude 04-end tracks |
| Favaro Veneto | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Immediately west; lateral approach/departure tracks |
| Dese | ✈︎✈︎ | Under the north-eastern departure climb-out corridor |
| Quarto d’Altino | ✈︎✈︎ | Along the NE corridor; named in ARPAV night monitoring |
| Marcon | ✈︎✈︎ | North of the field; NE corridor and turning traffic |
| Cavallino-Treporti | ✈︎✈︎ | Across the lagoon SE; overflight on some tracks |
| Mestre | ✈︎ | Lateral to the main tracks; intermittent exposure |
| Carpenedo | ✈︎ | Off corridor; occasional higher-altitude overflight |
| Venezia (historic centre) | ✈︎ | Aircraft pass to one side over the lagoon, not overhead |
| Marghera | ✈︎ | Well off the lagoon approach corridor |
The counter-intuitive result is that the historic city of Venice is one of the quieter places on this map: on the common 04R approach, aircraft come in over the water with the island off to one side, so sustained low overflight of the centre is limited. If aircraft noise is your main concern, the mainland areas south-west of the field — Mestre, Carpenedo, Marghera — sit lateral to the corridor and only catch intermittent traffic. The places to scrutinise are the lagoon-edge villages ringing the airport (Tessera, Campalto, Ca’ Noghera, Favaro Veneto); if you’re looking at property there, drop a pin on the map above to see the exposure for the exact street.
Flight patterns and runway use
Venice operates one active runway in one of two directions depending on wind. In the predominant 04 configuration, aircraft make their final approach from the south-west, descending across the open Venetian Lagoon on an ILS with central Venice typically off to one side, and land toward the north-east. Departures then climb out to the north-east over the mainland — the Dese / Marcon / Quarto d’Altino corridor — which is why those mainland towns, rather than the city, carry the departure noise. This is the reason Quarto d’Altino, some 8 km out, still turns up by name in ARPAV’s night-noise monitoring despite its distance: it sits squarely under the climb-out track.
When winds favour the 22 direction, the pattern reverses: arrivals come in from the north-east over the mainland, and departures on 22L climb out to the south-west directly over the lagoon toward the Venice side. In this mode Campalto and the lagoon-edge districts feel the departure noise most, while the mainland corridor gets the arrivals.
Because the runway hugs the shoreline and much of both the approach and the departure track is over water, a large share of the noise footprint falls on the lagoon rather than on dense housing. The route-density layer on the map above shows this clearly: a single bright band running north-east/south-west through the field, fading out over open water to the south-west and stretching over the mainland corridor to the north-east, with relatively little spread to either side.
When is it quietest?
Venice does not have a full overnight ban, so the quiet window is narrower than at curfew airports — but it still follows a clear daily rhythm:
- Closure (midnight – 4 AM): the airport is closed to normal operations under ENAC ordinance 6/2015. Only state, medical and emergency flights are permitted, so these are the quietest hours — though not silent, and not a full statutory ban.
- 4 AM – 6 AM: operations resume; early long-haul and the first departure bank build up. Movements in this window are part of why ARPAV records night-limit exceedances near the field.
- 7 AM – 10 AM: morning peak, with back-to-back short-haul European departures and the first arrival waves.
- Midday: sustained, moderate traffic — Venice is a strongly seasonal leisure hub, so summer middays are notably busier than winter.
- Evening (5 PM – 10 PM): a second peak as arrivals from across Europe stack up and late departures push toward the midnight closure.
Wind direction matters as much as the clock. A shift from 04 to 22 operations suddenly puts the lagoon-edge districts under climb-out noise that was previously routing over the mainland, and vice versa. For the hourly profile at your address, drop a pin on the map above.
How to check noise at your specific address
The map above is the answer to “is this spot loud?” Three steps:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
- Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.
The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) make the single lagoon-aligned corridor obvious. Most addresses in the historic city and in the mainland areas south-west of the field will land in the green/quiet zone for daytime noise; the ring of lagoon-edge villages around the airport is where exposure climbs, and the midnight–4 AM closure is the only guaranteed lull overnight.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is there aircraft noise around Venice Marco Polo Airport?
- Venice Marco Polo (VCE/LIPZ) sits right on the northern rim of the Venetian Lagoon at Tessera, about 7.5 km from the historic city. Its single active runway, 04R/22L, runs north-east to south-west along the shoreline, so a large share of the approach and departure track lies over open water. That keeps ground noise off the dense city but concentrates it on the lagoon-edge villages — Tessera, Campalto, Favaro Veneto and Ca' Noghera — plus the mainland corridor toward Dese, Marcon and Quarto d'Altino under north-eastern departures.
- Which Venice areas are quietest for aircraft noise?
- The historic island of Venice itself is surprisingly clear — on the most common 04R approaches aircraft pass to one side over the lagoon rather than directly overhead. Mestre, Carpenedo and Marghera to the south-west sit lateral to the main tracks, so overflight is intermittent. The most consistently affected areas are the lagoon-edge villages next to the field. Drop a pin on the map above to check any specific address.
- Is Tessera loud from planes?
- Yes — Tessera is the closest settlement to the airport and gives it its name. It sits directly in the 04R/22L threshold environment, so it is continuously overflown at very low altitude and also picks up ground noise from taxiing and engine run-ups. It is one of the areas where ARPAV recorded night-time exceedances of the 50 dB(A) limit. Use the pin-drop tool above to see the exposure for your street.
- How does the runway direction change who hears the noise?
- In the predominant configuration aircraft land on 04R, approaching from the south-west across the open lagoon and touching down toward the north-east; departures then climb out north-east over the mainland (the Dese / Marcon / Quarto d'Altino corridor). When winds favour the 22 direction, arrivals come in from the north-east over the mainland and departures on 22L climb out to the south-west directly over the lagoon toward the Venice side. So Campalto and the lagoon edge feel the 22 departures most, while the mainland corridor feels the 04 climb-outs.
- Does Venice Marco Polo have night flights?
- Yes, some. The airport closes to normal operations only from midnight to 4 AM under ENAC ordinance 6/2015, and state, medical and emergency flights are exempt even then. There is no full 23:00–06:00 ban — the national one was annulled by the courts in 2014 — so late-evening and early-morning movements still occur. ARPAV has recorded roughly ten aircraft per night on average during monitoring campaigns.
- Do planes fly directly over the historic centre of Venice?
- Rarely directly overhead. Because the runway hugs the lagoon shore and the main 04R approach tracks come in from the south-west over water, aircraft typically pass to one side of the island city rather than across it. You may see and hear traffic across the lagoon, but sustained low-altitude overflight of the historic centre is limited compared with the lagoon-edge villages near the field.
- How do I report aircraft noise around Venice airport?
- Noise concerns can be directed to SAVE S.p.A., the airport operator, via its environment office and information desk at Viale Galileo Galilei 30/1, Tessera-Venezia. Regional noise monitoring is carried out by ARPAV Veneto, and ENAC provides national oversight. The operator publishes environmental and monitoring data on its dedicated environment portal.
- Does this map include all aircraft around Venice?
- It reflects aircraft broadcasting standard tracking signals, which covers essentially all scheduled commercial jets using Marco Polo. A small amount of general-aviation, military or state traffic may not appear, but the heatmap and route-density layers accurately represent the everyday airline traffic that drives the noise footprint.
