Athens Flight Path Noise Map – Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH)
Aircraft noise around Athens in October 2026
Loudest neighborhoods near Athens: Spata, Artemida (Loutsa), Markopoulo Mesogaias, Rafina. Quietest: Pallini, Peania, Glyka Nera, Gerakas. Busiest around 10 AM local time averaging 870 flights/day. Source: Flight Path Noise monitoring data, 30 days to 2026-10-20.
Does Athens Airport have a curfew?
No — Athens (Eleftherios Venizelos) runs 24 hours with no curfew, but mandatory night rules (11 PM – 7 AM) reshuffle runway use to protect the closest towns.
Athens International Airport operates around the clock, and there is no overnight ban on flights. What it does have is a mandatory night-time noise-abatement regime written into the Greek AIP and running from 23:00 to 07:00 local. During those hours runway 21L may not be used for landings and runway 03R may not be used for take-offs, which pushes night traffic onto the western runway (03L/21R) and away from the closest eastern communities of Spata and Artemida. Any ad-hoc or local training flight at night needs prior approval from the Airport Duty Officer, and maintenance engine run-ups are confined to daytime hours (07:00–23:00). Separately, a list of older, noisier aircraft types (Boeing 707/727/737-200, DC-8/9/10, IL-62/76/96, TU-134/154, An-124 and similar) is barred from 03R departures and 21L landings on a 24-hour basis, and Chapter 2 jets have been banned outright since 2002. Air-mail, governmental, ambulance, police, humanitarian and emergency flights are exempt from the night rules, and controllers may deviate from them for safety, extreme weather or exceptional traffic demand. So the honest answer to “does Athens airport have a curfew?” is no — but the night is deliberately quieter over the nearest homes than the daytime is.
Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” (ATH/LGAV) opened at Spata in 2001, replacing the old coastal Hellinikon airport — and the aircraft noise moved with it, from the dense southern suburbs out to the Mesogeia plain of East Attica. Today the smaller towns of Spata, Artemida, Markopoulo, Rafina and Koropi sit under the corridors of two parallel north-east/south-west runways, and the Greek AIP names exactly those five communities as the residential areas its noise-abatement rules exist to protect. The airport runs 24 hours with no curfew, but between 23:00 and 07:00 runway use is deliberately reshuffled to pull night traffic away from the closest homes. Central Athens, screened by distance and the Hymettus ridge, hears remarkably little of its own hub.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
Athens runs two parallel runways aligned north-east/south-west (true bearings 037/217): the eastern 03R/21L (4,000 m) and the western 03L/21R (3,800 m). Almost all residential noise comes from the extended centrelines of these two runways, so the split between affected and quiet areas is essentially a question of whether you sit under one of those corridors or off to the side.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Spata | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Host town, closest to the runways; ground noise plus both flows |
| Artemida (Loutsa) | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Directly under the north-east corridor; departures and arrivals |
| Markopoulo | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Under the south-west corridor; 03 arrivals and 21 departures |
| Rafina | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Under the extended north-east approach; 21 arrivals line up here |
| Koropi | ✈︎✈︎ | West of the 03 approach path; arrival noise in the preferred flow |
| Kalyvia Thorikou | ✈︎✈︎ | Under the extended southern corridor at intermediate altitude |
| Pikermi | ✈︎✈︎ | Between the extended centrelines; 21 arrivals and some 03 departures |
| Porto Rafti | ✈︎✈︎ | Off centreline but under arrivals curving in from the south-east |
| Pallini | ✈︎ | Off both axes; wide turns and downwind legs only |
| Peania | ✈︎ | Perpendicular to the runways; distant ground and sideline noise |
| Glyka Nera | ✈︎ | West of both corridors at the foot of Hymettus; high, infrequent |
| Gerakas | ✈︎ | Athens-side suburb outside the corridors; largely clear |
If aircraft noise is a priority, the practical move around Athens is to stay west of the airport toward the Hymettus foothills (Peania, Glyka Nera, Gerakas, Pallini) or well clear of the extended centrelines. These areas sit perpendicular to or beside the runway axes and only catch wide turns and distant sideline noise. The five AIP-named towns — Spata, Artemida, Markopoulo, Rafina and Koropi — are the most consistently affected; if you’re looking at a house there, drop a pin on the map above to see whether your specific street is under the centreline or off to one side.
Flight patterns and runway use
Both runways run north-east/south-west, and the AIP sets a preferential runway system: runways 03L/03R (a north-easterly flow) are used in preference to 21L/21R whenever the tailwind component is 5 knots or less and the runways are dry. That suits Attica’s prevailing northerly winds, including the summer meltemi, so the 03 flow is the everyday pattern for much of the year.
In 03 flow, arrivals descend from the south-west over Markopoulo and Koropi, and departures climb out to the north-east over Artemida, Rafina and the Evia Gulf. In 21 flow, the pattern reverses: approaches come in over Rafina and Artemida, while departures climb out over Markopoulo and Kalyvia. The wind determines which set of towns is under arrivals versus departures on any given day.
Athens layers several noise-abatement procedures on top of this. Departing jets and large turboprops on 03L/03R must hold take-off thrust to 1,800 ft and not accelerate past V2+10 until 3,300 ft, keeping them climbing steeply over the nearest homes; the supplementary 03R departure routes (SIDs 3 and 4) were designed specifically to ICAO noise-abatement criteria. Arrivals fly noise-optimised approaches with delayed gear and flap and minimal reverse thrust, and visual approaches must join final at least 10 NM out on the 03 side or 8 NM out on the 21 side. Aircraft transiting the Athens TMA that aren’t landing here are asked to stay above 3,000 ft over residential areas.
The route-density layer on the map above shows the cumulative result: two bright bands running north-east and south-west from the field along the runway centrelines, fading quickly to either side. Because traffic is funnelled onto those two axes, the difference between a high- and a low-exposure address can be just a couple of kilometres of lateral offset.
When is it quietest?
Athens has no curfew, so unlike Sydney or London there’s no guaranteed silent overnight window — but the mandatory night rules and the daily traffic bank still shape a clear pattern:
- Night (11 PM – 7 AM): reduced traffic, and what does operate is pushed onto the western runway (03L/21R) because 21L landings and 03R take-offs are barred at night. Artemida and the eastern side get a quieter night than their daytime exposure suggests. Engine run-ups are banned in this window.
- Early morning (6 AM – 8 AM): the departure bank builds as the first wave of European and domestic flights leaves.
- Morning to midday (8 AM – 1 PM): sustained, busy — back-to-back narrowbody departures and arrivals.
- Afternoon (1 PM – 6 PM): steady, with the mix depending on the wind. A shift between 03 and 21 flow can suddenly move which towns are under arrivals versus departures.
- Evening (6 PM – 11 PM): a second peak as the day’s flights return, tapering into the lighter overnight period.
Because the preferential 03 flow depends on wind, the single biggest day-to-day variable is a wind shift. When the flow flips from 03 to 21, a town that was under climbing departures can find itself under descending arrivals within the same afternoon. How to check noise at your specific address
The map above answers “is this spot loud?” in three steps:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
- Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise, peak observed dB, flights per day within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.
The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) make the two-runway pattern obvious — a pair of bands along the north-east/south-west axes with quiet ground to either side. Most addresses west of the field or well off the extended centrelines land in the green zone for daytime noise; the towns directly under the corridors do not. The airport also runs an official noise-monitoring network and a WebTrak flight-track viewer if you want to cross-check an individual overflight.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is there aircraft noise around Athens Airport when the city itself is quiet?
- Athens International Airport (ATH/LGAV) sits at Spata on the Mesogeia plain of East Attica, about 20 km east-south-east of central Athens, and the Hymettus ridge screens the city from most of its noise. The burden falls on the towns immediately around the field — Spata, Artemida, Markopoulo, Rafina and Koropi — which the Greek AIP names as the protected residential areas its noise rules exist for. When the airport moved here from coastal Hellinikon in 2001, the noise moved with it.
- Which areas near Athens Airport are worst for plane noise?
- Spata (the host town), Artemida/Loutsa on the coast, and Markopoulo under the southern corridor are the most consistently affected, with Rafina catching the extended north-east approach. These four are among the five AIP-protected communities. Artemida and Markopoulo sit closest to the extended runway centrelines, so they get both departures climbing out and arrivals descending. Drop a pin on the map above to see the count for your exact street.
- Does Artemida (Loutsa) get a lot of flights overhead?
- Yes — Artemida sits directly under the north-east corridor. In the preferred 03 flow, departures climb north-east straight over the town toward the Evia Gulf; when the flow reverses to 21, arrivals descend over Artemida on their way in. It's one of the most overflown of the AIP-named residential areas. Use the pin-drop tool above to see whether your part of Artemida is under the centreline or off to the side.
- How are Athens Airport's runways used, and how does that affect noise?
- Both runways run north-east/south-west (bearings 037/217). The AIP sets a preferential rule — runways 03L/03R are used in preference to 21L/21R whenever the tailwind is 5 knots or less and the surface is dry, which suits Attica's prevailing northerly winds and the summer meltemi. In 03 flow, arrivals come in over Markopoulo and Koropi from the south-west and departures climb out over Artemida and Rafina; in 21 flow the pattern reverses.
- What are the night flight rules at Athens Airport?
- The airport is open 24 hours, but between 23:00 and 07:00 runway 21L is not used for landings and runway 03R is not used for take-offs, shifting night traffic onto the western runway away from the closest eastern homes. Ad-hoc and local training flights need Airport Duty Officer approval at night, and engine run-ups are limited to 07:00–23:00. Air-mail, governmental, ambulance, police, humanitarian and emergency flights are exempt.
- How do I report aircraft noise in the Athens area?
- Athens International Airport runs a community noise channel and an online e-Noise complaint form through its Environmental Management System. The airport also operates a ten-terminal noise-monitoring network (NOMOS) plus a mobile station and a WebTrak flight-track viewer, so you can look up an individual overflight before you complain. Logged reports feed the airport's environmental reporting.
- Does this map cover all the traffic at Athens Airport?
- Yes — the commercial fleet using Athens has near-complete ADS-B coverage, so the heatmap and route-density layers reflect real traffic accurately. The only gaps are a small amount of general-aviation and state traffic that may not be ADS-B-equipped. For scheduled airline movements, which drive almost all of the residential noise, the coverage is effectively complete.
