Does Parafield Airport have a curfew?

No — Parafield has no formal curfew.

Unlike Adelaide Airport, which has a legislated 11 PM to 6 AM curfew, Parafield has no formal curfew. The control tower operates in daylight hours and most training flying runs from early morning to dusk, but there is no hard legal cutoff. The pin-drop tool above shows the actual hourly pattern for any address.

Parafield is not a jet airport — and that is exactly why its noise story is different. Eighteen kilometres north of the Adelaide CBD, it is one of the busiest general-aviation and flight-training airports in Australia, recording on the order of 225,000 aircraft movements a year. Almost all of them are small training aircraft flying circuits — rectangular patterns around the field at roughly 1,000 feet — doing take-off after take-off and landing after landing. For the surrounding northern suburbs the result is not the occasional thunder of an airliner but a near-constant background of light-aircraft engines, the same planes passing overhead every few minutes through the day. It has driven organised community campaigns and a steady stream of noise complaints for years.

Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t

Because the noise comes from the training circuit rather than long arrival and departure corridors, exposure depends on whether you sit under the circuit and its turning legs. The suburbs that wrap the field take the most.

To the west, Parafield Gardens sits directly under the western circuit legs; to the south-west, Mawson Lakes is repeatedly overflown by aircraft climbing out low and at full power — the single most-cited complaint. Salisbury, off the northern runway ends, rounds out the three most-affected suburbs. Brahma Lodge, Salisbury East and Para Hills to the north-east and east catch the downwind and base legs depending on which way the circuit is running, while Pooraka and Walkley Heights sit under the southern side.

Further out, or off to the side of the circuit, the picture eases. Salisbury Downs is busy only on heavy training days, and Ingle Farm and Globe Derby Park hear mostly intermittent, higher, or lateral noise rather than the constant overhead circuit.

Suburb Exposure Why
Parafield, Parafield Gardens ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Wrapped around the field, under the western circuit
Mawson Lakes ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Low, full-power climb-outs overhead
Salisbury ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Off the northern runway ends
Brahma Lodge, Salisbury East, Para Hills ✈︎✈︎ Under downwind / base legs
Pooraka, Walkley Heights, Salisbury Downs ✈︎✈︎ Southern and north-western circuit edges
Ingle Farm, Globe Derby Park ✈︎ Off-circuit or further out — intermittent noise

Flight patterns and runway use

Parafield is built for circuit training, and its layout shows it: two sets of parallel runways. The main pair runs north-north-east to south-south-west — 03L/21R at 1,350 m and 03R/21L at 1,279 m — and a shorter cross pair runs roughly east–west, 08L/26R at 958 m and 08R/26L at 992 m. Having parallel strips lets the tower run multiple training circuits at once, which is part of why the airport can absorb so many movements.

Which runway is active depends on the wind, and the circuit direction (whether aircraft turn left or right after take-off) determines which suburbs sit under the downwind and base legs on a given day. What stays constant is that the aircraft are small, low and frequent. The airport is operated by Parafield Airport Limited and hosts several flight schools, including Flight Training Adelaide and the University of Adelaide’s aviation training, so much of the traffic is deliberately repetitive instructional flying rather than point-to-point travel.

When is it quietest?

Parafield has no legislated curfew, but its noise does follow the training day. The control tower operates in daylight hours, and circuit training is busiest from mid-morning through the afternoon. The quietest windows are early morning before the schools get going, the period after dusk once the tower closes, and poor-weather days when visual circuit training is curtailed. Unlike a holiday-driven passenger airport, weekends stay busy here with recreational and training flying. Because the difference between a home directly under the circuit and one a few streets away can be larger than any time-of-day effect, the hourly breakdown in the pin-drop report is the best way to judge your own situation.

How to check noise at your specific address

The map at the top of this page shows the overall noise and flight-density picture, but the most useful tool is the pin drop. Drop a pin on your home — or somewhere you are considering moving to — and the report tells you how many aircraft pass nearby, how loud they typically are, and how that activity is spread across the hours of the day. Around Parafield, where the circuit concentrates noise over particular suburbs, checking your exact address matters more than the suburb name alone. If you want to raise a noise concern, in-flight aircraft noise is handled by Airservices Australia on 1800 802 584, while ground noise such as engine run-ups goes to Parafield Airport Limited.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Parafield so noisy when it has no big jets?
Parafield is one of Australia's busiest flight-training airports, and the noise comes from repetition rather than size. Student pilots fly circuits — rectangular patterns around the field at about 1,000 feet — doing take-offs and landings over and over, often the same small piston aircraft passing every few minutes all day. It is the constant, low-altitude repetition that residents find wearing, not any single loud aircraft.
Which Adelaide suburbs get the most noise from Parafield?
Parafield Gardens and Mawson Lakes to the west and south, and Salisbury to the north, sit closest to the circuits and report the most noise. Brahma Lodge, Para Hills and Pooraka are also regularly affected. Suburbs further from the circuit, like Ingle Farm and Globe Derby Park, hear far less.
Why is Mawson Lakes so affected by aircraft noise?
Training aircraft frequently climb out over Mawson Lakes low and at full power, so even though the planes are small the noise arrives at close range. It is one of the most common subjects of complaints to the airport and to Airservices Australia. The map above shows how the noise falls across the suburb.
How many flights a day does Parafield handle?
Parafield records on the order of 225,000 aircraft movements a year — roughly 3,850 a week — the large majority of them student training flights. On a busy weekday that can mean several hundred take-offs and landings, which is why the circuit noise feels near-continuous.
How do I make an aircraft noise complaint about Parafield?
Aircraft noise in flight is handled by Airservices Australia's Noise Complaints and Information Service on 1800 802 584 or through its online complaint form. For noise generated on the ground, such as engine run-ups, contact the Parafield Airport Limited office on (08) 8307 5700.
When is Parafield quietest?
The quietest times are early morning before training starts, after dusk once the tower closes, and during poor weather when circuit training is limited. Weekends remain busy with recreational and training flying. Use the hourly breakdown in the pin-drop report to see how that plays out at your address.
How do I check the noise at my specific address?
Use the pin-drop tool at the top of this page. Drop a pin on your home and it reports how many aircraft pass nearby, how loud they typically are, and how that activity splits across the hours of the day — useful here because moving a street or two relative to the circuit can change the picture.
