Bangalore Flight Path Noise Map – Kempegowda International Airport (BLR)
Aircraft noise around Bangalore in October 2026
Loudest neighborhoods near Bangalore: Doddaballapur, Bettahalsoor, Vidyanagar (Devanahalli). Quietest: Hebbal, Thanisandra, Vijayapura, Sulibele / Nandi Hills foothills. Busiest around 9 PM local time averaging 708 flights/day. Source: Flight Path Noise monitoring data, 30 days to 2026-10-08.
Does Bangalore Airport have a curfew?
No — Bangalore has no formal curfew.
Kempegowda International operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with no published night-time operating-hour restriction. Night and early-morning movements, including cargo freighters, happen regularly, so homes directly under the east-west approach and departure centrelines can hear overnight traffic. Any ‘curfew’ references you find online relate to old citywide civic curfews, from which air travel was exempted — not an airport noise curfew.
Kempegowda International (BLR/VOBL) is unusual among big-city airports: it sits on an elevated plateau at roughly 915 m (3,000 ft) out at Devanahalli, about 35 km north of Bengaluru’s core, so the densest parts of the city are far from its flight paths. Both of its parallel runways run almost exactly east-west (09L/27R and 09R/27L), which means the noise footprint is a long, narrow east-west corridor rather than a spread cone — concentrated over the Devanahalli and Doddaballapur farmland to the east and the Yelahanka-to-airport stretch to the west. Because the field still has open agricultural land around much of its perimeter, the loudest exposure falls on fast-growing north Bengaluru townships, gated communities and villages strung along the approach and departure centrelines rather than on long-established dense neighbourhoods. The airport runs 24x7 with no curfew, so night freighters and red-eyes are part of the picture for anyone directly under final approach. For the large software-developer population moving into the northern corridor — Hebbal, Thanisandra, Devanahalli enclaves — how far you sit off the extended runway centreline matters far more than raw distance to the terminal.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
The single fact that decides noise at Kempegowda is the east-west runway alignment. Aircraft track east or west off the runway ends, so the loud band is a corridor along that axis. Sit on the extended centreline — east toward Vijayapura and the Nandi Hills foothills, or west toward Doddajala, Vidyanagar and Doddaballapur — and you’re under the traffic. Sit north or south of the field and you’re lateral to it, where noise is mostly side-of-field rumble and the occasional turning aircraft.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Doddaballapur | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | West-side town squarely in the 27-departure / 09-arrival corridor |
| Bettahalsoor | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Near the western extended axis, under low-altitude tracks |
| Vidyanagar (Devanahalli) | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Close-in west of the runways on the 27/09 line |
| Devanahalli town | ✈︎✈︎ | North of the field, lateral to the corridor, not under the centreline |
| Bagalur | ✈︎✈︎ | South of the field; catches turning departures and easterly ops |
| Chikkajala | ✈︎✈︎ | NH-44 corridor south-west, near but off the centreline |
| Yelahanka | ✈︎✈︎ | Broad western corridor, well off the field; some noise is military |
| Doddajala | ✈︎✈︎ | Close-in west but offset from the exact centreline |
| Hebbal | ✈︎ | 26 km out near the radius edge; high-altitude overflight |
| Thanisandra | ✈︎ | Dense IT belt under the path but high overhead, intermittent |
| Vijayapura | ✈︎ | Eastern centreline but far out; traffic is higher |
| Sulibele / Nandi Hills foothills | ✈︎ | Sparse farmland east of the field; high-altitude only |
The practical takeaway for buyers in the northern corridor: a flat that is off the east-west axis — to the north or south of the field, or well lateral on either side — will be markedly quieter than one the same distance away that happens to sit on the extended runway line. The close-in villages directly west of the runways (Vidyanagar, Bettahalsoor, Doddajala) are the most consistently affected; if you’re looking there, drop a pin on the map above to see your specific plot.
Flight patterns and runway use
Both runways are oriented almost exactly east-west (09/27), so virtually all departures and arrivals track east or west along the extended centrelines rather than over the bulk of Bengaluru to the south. Runway selection is driven by wind. The prevailing flow is seasonal: during the south-west monsoon (roughly June to September) westerly winds dominate, favouring runway 27 operations (landing from the east, departing to the west); the winter months bring lighter and more easterly or variable winds that allow runway 09 (easterly) operations. The 27 configuration is the more common default.
With two parallel runways the airport segregates traffic, running independent parallel operations — the first airport in South India to do so when the second runway (09R/27L) opened in December 2019. In practice one runway is used predominantly for departures and the other for arrivals: in the common westerly setup, 27R handles departures and 27L handles arrivals; in easterly ops this reverses. So in westerly operations, arriving aircraft descend on final from the east over the Devanahalli/Doddaballapur side, and departures climb out to the west toward the Yelahanka corridor. In easterly operations the whole picture flips.
Both runways are 4,000 m long and 45 m wide with CAT III instrument landing systems. (Some older sources quote the original runway at 4,900 m; current charts give both as 4,000 m.) The site is an inland, elevated plateau, so there are no over-water procedures. No published noise-abatement or noise-preferential runway scheme could be independently confirmed from the operator’s public pages, so runway choice here is best understood as wind- and capacity-driven rather than shaped to spare any particular township.
The route-density layer on the map above makes the pattern obvious: a bright east-west band off the runway ends that fades as aircraft climb to altitude, with the densest, lowest tracks within a few kilometres of the field on either side.
When is it quietest?
Because there is no curfew, Kempegowda never goes fully silent the way a curfew airport like Sydney does. Movements continue through the night, so the quiet-versus-loud question is really about traffic density by hour and about which way the wind is blowing:
- Overnight (roughly 11 PM – 5 AM): lightest passenger traffic, but cargo freighters and a handful of red-eye and early long-haul departures still operate. Homes directly under the east-west centrelines hear these; addresses lateral to the corridor get a near-quiet window.
- Early morning (5 AM – 9 AM): the heavy departure bank builds — domestic first waves plus international long-haul. This is one of the loudest stretches under the climb-out path.
- Midday: sustained, moderate traffic.
- Evening (6 PM – 10 PM): a second peak as international arrivals stack up and domestic returns land.
The other variable is configuration. A seasonal shift from westerly (27) to easterly (09) operations swaps which side of the field gets the low-altitude arrivals versus the climbing departures — so a home that’s under quiet high departures for much of the year can find itself under lower arrival traffic when the winds turn. If your address sits east or west of the field on the centreline, expect both configurations to affect you at some point in the year.

How to check noise at your specific address
Distance to the terminal tells you almost nothing here — the centreline does. The map above is built to answer “is this plot loud?” Three steps:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
- Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.
The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) will show you the long east-west band immediately — and, crucially, how quickly it falls off to the north and south. If you’re plot-hunting in the northern corridor, check two or three candidate addresses: moving a kilometre off the extended centreline often makes a far bigger difference than moving several kilometres further from the field.
Frequently asked questions
- Is it noisy to live near Bengaluru airport in Devanahalli?
- It depends almost entirely on where you sit relative to the runways, not raw distance to the terminal. Kempegowda's two runways run east-west (09/27), so the loud zone is a long, narrow corridor extending east and west of the field, not a circle around it. Devanahalli town itself is north of the airport — lateral to that corridor — so it catches side-of-field and turning noise but not the full approach footprint. Townships and villages directly west of the runways (Vidyanagar, Doddajala, Bettahalsoor) sit under low-altitude tracks and are louder. Drop a pin on the map above to see your exact street.
- Which direction do the runways at BLR face, and why does it matter?
- Both parallel runways are oriented almost exactly east-west: 09L/27R and 09R/27L. That means almost every departure and arrival tracks either east (over Devanahalli/Doddaballapur farmland) or west (toward the Yelahanka corridor), rather than over the bulk of Bengaluru city to the south. If your address is roughly on the extended east-west line off either runway end, you're under the flight path; if you're off to the north or south of the field, you're lateral to it and much quieter.
- Is Doddaballapur under the flight path?
- Yes. Doddaballapur sits on the western side of the airport along the broad extended-centreline corridor, where aircraft departing to the west (runway 27) climb out and aircraft arriving from the west (runway 09) descend. It is one of the larger towns directly in the east-west flow, so overflight is regular when the airport is in its common westerly configuration.
- How loud is aircraft noise in Hebbal and Thanisandra?
- Both Hebbal and Thanisandra are 24-26 km south-west of the field, near the edge of the area this map covers. They sit broadly under the north Bengaluru climb and descent path, but by the time aircraft are over them they're at higher altitude, so overflights are intermittent and high overhead rather than the constant low-level noise you'd get out near the runway ends. Use the pin-drop tool above to see how many flights actually pass within 2 km of your address.
- Are planes over Yelahanka from the airport or the air force station?
- Both, and it's worth separating them. Yelahanka is within the broad western corridor for Kempegowda traffic, but it also sits near the separate Yelahanka Air Force Station (VOYK). Some of the noise residents there hear — particularly fast jets, formation flying and air-show practice — is military and unrelated to commercial flights at BLR. The civil-traffic heatmap above reflects Kempegowda movements, not military activity.
- How do I complain about aircraft noise in Bengaluru?
- The main public grievance channel is AirSewa, the Ministry of Civil Aviation's portal at airsewa.gov.in, where you can log airport, airline and aircraft-related complaints. The airport operator (Bangalore International Airport Limited, BIAL) and the regulator DGCA, which handles an environmental complaint category, also receive complaints. There is no dedicated 24-hour noise-complaint line of the kind some Western airports run.
- Why does Bengaluru airport's noise fall mostly on farmland and new townships?
- The airport is out at Devanahalli, about 35 km north of central Bengaluru, on an elevated plateau surrounded by open agricultural land. Because the densest parts of the city are far to the south and the runways point east-west, the loudest exposure lands on villages, gated communities and fast-growing northern townships strung along the approach and departure lines — not on long-established dense neighbourhoods. For buyers in the northern corridor, how far you sit off the extended centreline matters far more than distance to the terminal.
