Does Budapest Airport have a curfew?

Partial — no outright ban, but a strict night movement quota (10 PM–6 AM).

There is no outright nighttime ban, but a strict quota. The night period runs 22:00 to 05:55 local and is capped at 50 movements, of which no more than 6 are allowed in the 00:00 to 05:00 deep-sleep core. Training and check flights are prohibited at night, and only ICAO noise-certified aircraft may operate. So flights do continue overnight, just at a sharply reduced rate.

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD/LHBP) is the single commercial airport serving the Hungarian capital, sitting about 16 km south-east of central Budapest in the area historically called Ferihegy. What makes it unusual among European capital hubs is the geometry: its two parallel runways are aligned north-west to south-east (13/31), so the noise footprint is a long, narrow corridor rather than a broad fan. Planes either come and go over the south-eastern farm-town belt of Vecsés and Üllő, or over the south-eastern Budapest districts toward Pestszentimre and Rákoshegy. Because the airport is wedged against the city’s edge, the daily runway-direction choice is essentially a decision about which residential community absorbs the day’s overflights. One defining fact: Hungarian law gives Rákoshegy (District XVII) special legal protection that restricts how often traffic may route over it. There is no hard nighttime ban, but a strict quota — just 50 movements between 22:00 and 05:55, of which only 6 are allowed in the 00:00–05:00 “deep-sleep” core.

Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t

Budapest runs two parallel runways: the longer 13L/31R (3,707 m) carries the bulk of heavy and long-haul movements, and the shorter 13R/31L (3,010 m) is used to split arrivals from departures and as the preferential night arrival runway. Both run on the same 132/312-degree axis, so the high-exposure ring is the narrow band off each runway end — the south-eastern towns of Vecsés and Üllő, and the north / north-western suburbs around Rákoshegy. Communities sitting lateral to that axis, even fairly close ones to the west, get higher and less direct overflights.

Area Aircraft noise Why
Vecsés ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Immediately south-east off the runway ends; low final-approach and climb-out, wake-vortex roof damage documented
Rákoshegy (District XVII) ✈︎✈︎✈︎ On the north-western extended axis; legally protected and named for wake-vortex damage
Üllő ✈︎✈︎✈︎ South-east extended centreline; under 13 departures and 31 climb-outs
Pestszentimre (District XVIII) ✈︎✈︎ West/south-west and lateral to the axis; inside the noise-protection zone but higher overflights
Pestszentlőrinc (District XVIII) ✈︎✈︎ West of the field, lateral to the runway axis
Rákoskeresztúr (District XVII) ✈︎✈︎ Off-centreline turning traffic in the 31/13 corridor
Gyál ✈︎✈︎ South of the field; oblique departure and turn noise
Pécel ✈︎✈︎ North-east; downwind legs and turning traffic
Maglód ✈︎✈︎ East, near the south-eastern approach funnel
Ecser ✈︎✈︎ East; intermediate approach/departure tracks
Soroksár (District XXIII) ✈︎ Well west and off the main corridor
Monor ✈︎ Far down the south-east approach line at altitude
Kőbánya (District X) ✈︎ Off the tightest corridor; higher overflights

If aircraft noise is a primary concern, the practical move in Budapest is to stay clear of the north-west to south-east axis. The most consistently affected addresses are the on-axis towns at the runway ends — Vecsés and Üllő to the south-east, Rákoshegy and its neighbours to the north / north-west. Suburbs that are close to the field but sit to the west or east of the runway line (Pestszentlőrinc, Pestszentimre, Ecser, Gyál) get the corridor’s edge rather than its centre. If you are looking at a specific street, drop a pin on the map above to see its exposure rather than relying on district averages.

Flight patterns and runway use

Both runways operate on a 132/312-degree axis, so every takeoff and landing heads either north-west or south-east. The direction is chosen to use the prevailing wind, following HungaroControl’s meteorological forecasts. Westerly and north-westerly winds — which favour the 31 direction — are common, making 31 operations frequent.

In runway-31 configuration, aircraft land from the south-east (over Vecsés and Üllő) and depart to the north-west (over the south-eastern Budapest districts). In runway-13 configuration the pattern reverses: arrivals approach from the north-west over Budapest, and departures climb out to the south-east over Vecsés and Üllő. During the day, arrivals are concentrated on the right-hand runway (31R/13R) and departures on the left (31L/13L) to separate and balance noise between the two parallel paths.

ICAO Doc 8168 (PANS-OPS) noise-abatement takeoff procedures are mandatory unless waived for weather or safety. Hungarian law imposes special restrictions to minimise overflight of Rákoshegy, and on final approach within about 4 km of the runway ends, wake vortices trailing behind landing aircraft have occasionally damaged roofs in Vecsés and Rákoshegy. This is an overland airport with no over-water routing option, so unlike coastal hubs there is no way to push the corridor offshore — the only lever is which of the two end-directions is in use.

The route-density layer on the map above makes the pattern obvious: a bright, narrow corridor running north-west to south-east through the runway ends, with the heaviest density right over the on-axis towns and a rapid drop-off to either side.

When is it quietest?

Budapest’s overnight quota shapes the daily noise profile. There is no outright ban, but the night is tightly rationed, so the quiet window is real if not total:

Wind also matters. A shift that flips the airport from 31 to 13 operations (or back) suddenly swaps which communities are under arrivals versus departures — Vecsés can go from catching low landings to catching climb-outs within a single day. For your specific address, drop a pin on the map above to see the hourly profile.

How to check noise at your specific address

The map above answers the only question that really matters: is this spot loud? Three steps:

  1. Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
  2. Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
  3. Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.

The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) make the narrow north-west to south-east band obvious — you can see at a glance whether your street sits on the axis or off to the side. Most addresses well to the west or east of the runway line will land in the green/quiet zone for daytime noise, while the on-axis towns at the runway ends (Vecsés, Üllő, Rákoshegy) show the brightest exposure. If your home falls inside a high-exposure zone, the airport’s noise-protection programme has funded sound insulation for eligible properties — call the noise hotline on +36 80 203 820 or check the noise-protection pages at bud.hu.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Budapest airport noise complaint phone number?
Budapest Airport runs a noise-protection hotline on +36 80 203 820, operated through its environmental department and the For the Neighbours of Budapest Airport Foundation. You can also use the noise-protection pages at bud.hu. Air traffic itself is handled by HungaroControl, the Hungarian air navigation service provider.
Is Vecsés loud from the airport?
Yes — Vecsés is one of the most affected communities. It sits roughly 3 km south-east, directly off the runway ends, so aircraft pass low on final approach in runway-31 operations and on climb-out in runway-13 operations. The airport's own documents name Vecsés as a location where wake vortices from landing aircraft have damaged roofs. Drop a pin on the map above to see the exposure for your exact street.
Does the airport fly over Rákoshegy in District XVII?
Rákoshegy lies on the north-western extended runway axis, roughly 4 km from the runway end, so it is overflown by runway-13 arrivals and runway-31 departures. Hungarian law gives Rákoshegy special legal protection that restricts how often traffic may route over it, and it is one of the locations named for wake-vortex roof damage within about 4 km of the runway ends.
Which direction are the runways using today — 13 or 31?
Both parallel runways run on a 132/312-degree axis, so traffic is always either to the north-west or the south-east, chosen to take off and land into the prevailing wind. Westerly and north-westerly winds favour the 31 direction (landings from the south-east over Vecsés and Üllő, departures to the north-west over the south-eastern Budapest districts), and these are common. The map above shows the live pattern for the current configuration.
Does the airport fly over Pestszentimre and Pestszentlőrinc?
Both Pestszentimre and Pestszentlőrinc (District XVIII) lie inside the designated noise-protection zones but are positioned west and south-west of the field, lateral to the north-west to south-east runway axis rather than under the extended centreline. That means overflights tend to be higher and less direct than for on-axis suburbs like Vecsés or Rákoshegy.
Can I get window insulation through the airport's noise-protection programme?
Budapest Airport runs a multi-phase noise-protection programme that has funded sound insulation, including windows, for properties inside the designated noise-protection zones. Eligibility depends on which zone and which programme phase your address falls into. Check the noise-protection pages at bud.hu or call the hotline on +36 80 203 820 for current eligibility.
Is the aircraft noise from wake-vortex roof damage a real risk?
On final approach within roughly 4 km of the runway ends, wake vortices trailing behind landing aircraft have occasionally damaged roofs in Vecsés and Rákoshegy — this is documented in the airport's own noise-protection material. It is confined to the closest on-axis communities at the runway ends, not the wider corridor.
