Does Western Sydney Airport have a curfew?

No — Western Sydney has no formal curfew.

WSI is explicitly planned for 24-hour, 7-day, curfew-free operations — its single most contested feature, and a deliberate contrast with Sydney Kingsford Smith’s mandatory 11 PM – 6 AM curfew. Because the Badgerys Creek land was reserved and kept clear of dense housing for decades, the federal government argues a curfew isn’t needed. The only night relief is operational, not a ban: a ministerial direction prioritises a noise-abatement runway mode, but aircraft can legally operate at any hour.

Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI/YSWS) is Australia’s first brand-new major airport in over 50 years, and its defining noise story is what it deliberately will not have: a curfew. Unlike Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport — bound by an 11 PM – 6 AM curfew and an 80-movements-per-hour cap — WSI is designed to run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with no night-time ban. That single fact has driven years of community debate across the Blue Mountains and outer western suburbs. Because the Badgerys Creek land was reserved and kept clear of dense housing for decades, the federal government argues a curfew is unnecessary; residents under the newly published preliminary flight paths disagree. The airport opens with one runway (05/23) and a planned overnight noise-abatement mode that sends jets to and from the south-west, over more sparsely populated land. Whether your home is loud or quiet here depends almost entirely on which direction that single runway is operating.

Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t

WSI opens with a single Stage 1 runway, 05/23 (3,700 m / 12,139 ft — long enough for the largest widebodies like the A350-1000 and Boeing 777X), aligned roughly south-west to north-east. A second parallel runway is planned only for a future expansion stage and is not part of the 2026 opening. With just one runway, exposure is almost entirely about whether you sit under the north-east end (Runway 05) or the south-west end (Runway 23) — and the suburbs closest to the field cop both ends regardless.

Area Aircraft noise Why
Luddenham ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Closest township; under low-level corridors either runway direction
Badgerys Creek ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Adjacent to the site, beneath the runway centreline
Greendale ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Under Runway 23 departures and the night south-west corridor; worst when 23 is in use
Erskine Park ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Under Runway 05 departures; worst when 05 is in use
Kemps Creek ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Beneath the Runway 05 departure / Runway 23 arrival corridor
Silverdale ✈︎✈︎ South-west descent/climb line toward Warragamba
Rossmore ✈︎✈︎ South-east, off centreline but in turning airspace
Bringelly ✈︎✈︎ South, under turning departure tracks
Wallacia ✈︎✈︎ West, near the foothills; night RRO is designed to avoid it
Warragamba ✈︎✈︎ West; a low approach point (~457 m AGL) before landing
St Marys ✈︎✈︎ Under climbing 05 departures and 23 arrivals
Glenbrook ✈︎✈︎ Blue Mountains foothill; higher-altitude tracks
Penrith ✈︎ Edge of climbing/descending tracks at higher altitude
Blaxland ✈︎ Blue Mountains; high-altitude (~1,266 m AGL)

If aircraft noise is your priority, the quietest places are well off the runway’s south-west/north-east axis and further from the field — larger centres like Penrith to the north, or Blue Mountains suburbs such as Blaxland that catch only high-altitude overflight. The ring of high-exposure suburbs (Luddenham, Badgerys Creek, Greendale, Erskine Park, Kemps Creek) sits directly under low-level departure and arrival tracks. Because these are indicative paths that will be reviewed after opening, the smartest move before buying or renting is to drop a pin on the map above and check your specific street under both runway directions.

Flight patterns and runway use

WSI runs a single runway, 05/23, and which end is “active” flips with the wind. On Runway 05, aircraft take off to the north-east — over Kemps Creek, Erskine Park and the St Marys/Penrith area — and arrive from the south-west. On Runway 23, the flow reverses: departures climb out to the south-west over Greendale, Silverdale and toward Warragamba, with arrivals coming in from the north-east. The official material names Greendale as worst-affected when Runway 23 is in use, and Erskine Park (with St Marys further out) among the worst when Runway 05 is in use.

The distinctive part is the night. The federal government has committed to a ministerial direction prioritising Reciprocal Runway Operations – Noise Abatement Procedure (RRO-NAP) in the roughly 11 PM – 5:30 AM window, when winds are calm and weather permits. In this “head-to-head” mode, aircraft both take off to and arrive from the south-west, deliberately concentrating overnight movements over the more sparsely populated land toward Greendale and Bringelly and steering traffic away from the Blue Mountains, Wallacia and the denser northern suburbs. It is a noise-abatement preference, not a movement cap — if conditions don’t allow it, normal operations continue, and aircraft can legally fly at any hour.

Preliminary flight paths were published in the final Environmental Impact Statement (November 2024) and authorised by the Minister in June 2025, but they remain indicative and subject to a post-implementation review once operations begin. WSI is also the first major Australian airport with no on-site control tower, relying on a remote/digital tower. The route-density layer on the map above shows the expected corridors fanning north-east and south-west from the single runway.

When is it quietest?

WSI’s noise profile is unusual because there is no curfew to enforce a guaranteed silent window. Instead, the quiet is directional and conditional:

The practical takeaway: unlike curfew-bound Kingsford Smith, WSI offers no blanket overnight guarantee. Your quietest periods are whenever the active runway direction points traffic away from your suburb. Drop a pin on the map above to see the hourly profile for your address once live data accrues after opening.

How to check noise at your specific address

The map above answers “is this spot loud?” Three steps:

  1. Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
  2. Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
  3. Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.

The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) make the single 05/23 axis obvious — a bright band running north-east toward Erskine Park and St Marys, and south-west toward Greendale and Warragamba. Because WSI opens in 2026, early data will build up after the first flights; the corridors shown reflect the authorised preliminary paths, which are themselves subject to review. To raise an aircraft-noise concern, contact Airservices Australia’s Noise Complaints and Information Service at complaints.bksv.com/asa or 1800 802 584.

Frequently asked questions

Will Western Sydney Airport be loud, and when does it open?
Western Sydney International (WSI/YSWS) is scheduled to open around October 2026 as Australia's first brand-new major airport in over 50 years. Whether your home is loud depends almost entirely on which way the single runway (05/23) is operating. Suburbs directly under the runway centreline and departure tracks — Luddenham, Badgerys Creek, Greendale, Erskine Park and Kemps Creek — see the lowest, loudest overflights. Drop a pin on the map above to see your address.
What are Reciprocal Runway Operations (RRO) at night?
RRO-NAP is a 'head-to-head' noise-abatement mode prioritised overnight (roughly 11 PM – 5:30 AM) when winds are calm and weather permits. Instead of the usual one-direction flow, aircraft both take off to AND arrive from the south-west, concentrating night movements over the more sparsely populated land toward Greendale and Bringelly rather than the denser northern suburbs and the Blue Mountains. It's a preference, not a curfew — if winds or safety don't allow it, normal operations apply.
Will planes fly over Erskine Park and St Marys?
Yes, when Runway 05 is in use. On Runway 05, aircraft take off to the north-east over Kemps Creek, Erskine Park and the St Marys/Penrith area. Erskine Park is named among the worst-affected suburbs in that configuration. St Marys sits further out under climbing departures and Runway 23 arrivals, so noise is real but at higher altitude. Use the pin-drop tool to see how the two runway directions split the traffic over your street.
Why is Greendale singled out as worst-affected?
Greendale sits directly under the Runway 23 departure path to the south-west, and also under the night-time RRO corridor. When Runway 23 is in use — and during the prioritised overnight south-west mode — departing jets climb out low over Greendale, making it the worst-affected suburb in that configuration. Silverdale and the approach toward Warragamba are on the same south-western line.
Is the Blue Mountains affected by Western Sydney Airport noise?
Blue Mountains foothill suburbs like Glenbrook and Blaxland sit under higher-altitude arrival and departure tracks — audible but elevated (Blaxland around 1,266 m above ground in flight-path material). The night RRO procedure is specifically designed to steer aircraft to the south-west and away from the Blue Mountains and Wallacia. Mountains residents have been a vocal focus of the flight-path debate even though direct low-level overflight is concentrated nearer the field.
Are these flight paths final?
Not entirely. Preliminary flight paths were published in the final Environmental Impact Statement in November 2024 and authorised by the Minister in June 2025, but they remain described as 'indicative' and are subject to a post-implementation review once the airport begins operating. Actual tracks, altitudes and the balance between runway directions can shift after opening. The map above reflects expected corridors, not a locked-in guarantee.
How do I lodge an aircraft noise complaint for Western Sydney?
Aircraft noise complaints go to Airservices Australia's Noise Complaints and Information Service (NCIS) — online at complaints.bksv.com/asa or by phone on 1800 802 584. Air traffic management is a federal Airservices responsibility, not something the airport operator handles directly. WSI is also notable as the first major Australian airport with no on-site control tower, using a remote/digital tower instead.
