Lyon Flight Path Noise Map – Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport (LYS)
Aircraft noise around Lyon in October 2026
Loudest neighborhoods near Lyon: Pusignan, Colombier-Saugnieu, Grenay, Janneyrias. Quietest: Genas, Charvieu-Chavagneux, Saint-Quentin-Fallavier, Saint-Bonnet-de-Mure. Busiest around 2 PM local time averaging 340 flights/day. Source: Flight Path Noise monitoring data, 30 days to 2026-10-19.
Does Lyon Airport have a curfew?
No — Lyon-Saint Exupéry operates 24 hours, but a ministerial order bans the noisiest jets between 10 PM and 6 AM.
Lyon-Saint Exupéry has no blanket curfew — the airport is legally open 24 hours a day. Instead, France regulates night noise by ministerial order (arrêté). The order of 10 September 2003, substantially amended on 29 June 2022 (published in the Journal officiel, effective 1 February 2023), bans the noisiest Chapter-3 jets — those with a cumulative noise margin under 13 EPNdB, tightened from the previous 5 EPNdB threshold — from operating between 22:00 and 06:00. Older Chapter-2 aircraft are barred outright. Carriers that flew qualifying aircraft at night in 2019-2021 were given a three-year phase-out with movements capped at historical levels and declining each year, so the stricter regime is fully in force from early 2026. So while flights can and do occur overnight, the loudest aircraft are legally kept out of the 10 PM – 6 AM window. Sanctions for breaches are handed down nationally by ACNUSA, the French airport-noise authority.
Lyon-Saint Exupéry (LYS/LFLL) sits about 20 km east of Lyon on the flat Plaine de l’Est, so its noise story plays out not over the city itself but over a ring of small communes strung along the north-south axis of its two parallel runways — Pusignan and Janneyrias to the north, Colombier-Saugnieu to the east, Grenay and Satolas-et-Bonce to the south. France regulates the airport by ministerial order rather than a blanket curfew: it stays open 24 hours, but since 2003 the noisiest jets have been banned overnight, and a 2022 order sharply widened that ban. In calm winds the airport prefers a face-north configuration, and the whole overflight pattern flips wholesale when southerly winds force runway-17 operations.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
Lyon-Saint Exupéry runs two parallel north-south runways: the western 17R/35L (4,000 m, wide-body capable and preferred for departures) and the eastern 17L/35R (2,670 m, mostly narrow-body and preferred for arrivals). Because the two streams are kept side by side, the loud band is relatively narrow but it runs the full length of the site — and which communes catch it depends on which end of the runways is in use.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pusignan | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | On the extended centreline north of the runways; under 35L climb-out and runway-17 arrivals |
| Colombier-Saugnieu | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Airport’s own commune; ground noise, sideline exposure, low turning traffic |
| Grenay | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Directly under the southern centreline — 35L/35R approach and runway-17 departures |
| Janneyrias | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Just northeast of the 17L threshold; eastern-runway climb-out and arrivals |
| Jons | ✈︎✈︎ | Northern approach axis by the Rhône; runway-17 arrivals at ~2,000-3,000 ft |
| Villette-d’Anthon | ✈︎✈︎ | Under the northern corridor; runway-35 departures before they turn |
| Saint-Laurent-de-Mure | ✈︎✈︎ | Southwest of the 35L threshold, just off the centreline |
| Satolas-et-Bonce | ✈︎✈︎ | Southeast near the 35R approach side |
| Jonage | ✈︎✈︎ | Westbound turns off runway-35 departures |
| Meyzieu | ✈︎✈︎ | Westbound departure turns and base-leg vectors; intermittent |
| Genas | ✈︎ | Due west, abeam rather than under the flows |
| Charvieu-Chavagneux | ✈︎ | Northeast of the departure corridor; higher SID turns |
| Saint-Quentin-Fallavier | ✈︎ | Wider southern arrival corridor; aircraft still at height |
| Saint-Bonnet-de-Mure | ✈︎ | Off the runway axis; background traffic only |
The practical pattern is simple: exposure is worst directly north or south of the runways along the centreline, and drops off sharply as you move east or west of the axis. Genas, for example, is barely 6.5 km from the runways but sits abeam them and hears mostly distant sideline noise, while Grenay at a similar distance is directly under the approach. If you’re weighing a house or apartment in one of these communes, drop a pin on the map above to see the exact exposure for that street rather than relying on the village name alone.
Flight patterns and runway use
Both runways run almost exactly north-south, so operations swing between two mirror-image states depending on the wind. The published preferred setup in calm winds is face-north: departures roll north on runway 35L and arrivals land on 35R. That sends departures climbing over Pusignan, Janneyrias and the Villette-d’Anthon plain, while arrivals descend from the south over Grenay, Satolas-et-Bonce and the Saint-Quentin-Fallavier corridor.
When southerly winds set in, the airport flips to runway 17: arrivals now approach from the north over Jons and Pusignan, and departures roll out southbound over Grenay. This is why a commune like Pusignan can hear climbing departures one day and descending arrivals the next — it sits near the northern end of the axis either way.
Because the airport generally uses segregated operations — one runway for departures, the other for arrivals — the two parallel streams stay side by side, which roughly doubles the width of the overflown band compared with a single-runway airport. Lyon layers several noise-abatement measures on top: strict adherence to published departure routes with an early climb to 4,000 ft, continuous-descent approaches, and a ban on visual approaches. Since January 2022 the airport has also modulated its landing and take-off charges to surcharge noisier aircraft, nudging airlines toward quieter types.
The route-density layer on the map above makes the pattern obvious: a bright corridor extending north and south from the runways, with the density fading east and west as aircraft turn onto their departure routes or line up for final approach.
When is it quietest?
Lyon-Saint Exupéry has no full overnight shutdown, so unlike a curfew airport there is no guaranteed silent window — but the mix of traffic still varies a lot across the day:
- Late night (10 PM – 6 AM): the airport stays open, and freight is a meaningful part of Lyon’s traffic, so movements continue overnight. The key limit is on aircraft type — the noisiest Chapter-3 jets and all older Chapter-2 aircraft are banned in this window (see the curfew section above) — so what you hear at night tends to be quieter, more modern aircraft rather than the loudest types.
- Early morning (6 AM – 8 AM): departure bank builds as the night restriction lifts and the first wave of flights leaves.
- Daytime (8 AM – 6 PM): the busiest and most sustained period, with departures and arrivals running on both runways.
- Evening (6 PM – 10 PM): a second arrival-heavy peak as the day’s flights return, tapering into the night.
The bigger swing for any given commune is wind direction, not time of day. A shift from calm to southerly can move the loud traffic from one end of the runways to the other within a single afternoon, so a house that was quiet all morning can find itself under the approach by evening. The hourly breakdown in the map’s pin-drop report captures this for your specific address.
How to check noise at your specific address
The map above answers the only question that really matters — is this spot loud? Three steps:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
- Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise, peak observed level, the number of flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.
Switch on the Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) to see the north-south runway pattern directly. Around Lyon-Saint Exupéry, most of the difference comes down to how close you are to the centreline: an address a few kilometres east or west of the runway axis will usually land in the quiet zone, while anything directly north or south of the runways — Pusignan, Grenay, Janneyrias — sits in the busy band. Check the exact street before you commit, because two villages the same distance from the airport can have completely different exposure.
Frequently asked questions
- Why are there so many planes over Pusignan?
- Pusignan sits almost exactly on the extended centreline just north of Lyon-Saint Exupéry's two parallel runways, which makes it the airport's single most overflown village. In the airport's usual calm-wind 'face-north' setup, departures climb north off runway 35L directly over the commune; when southerly winds flip operations to runway 17, arrivals descend over Pusignan instead. Either way it gets traffic. Drop a pin on the map above to see the exact count over your street.
- Which villages around Lyon airport are worst for aircraft noise?
- The heaviest exposure is along the north-south runway axis: Pusignan and Janneyrias to the north, Colombier-Saugnieu immediately east (the airport's own commune), and Grenay to the south under the approach and departure centreline. Communes off to the sides — Genas, Charvieu-Chavagneux, Saint-Bonnet-de-Mure — hear far less because they sit abeam the runways rather than beneath the flight paths.
- Does Lyon-Saint Exupéry have night flights?
- Yes. The airport is legally open 24 hours and freight and some passenger flights operate overnight. What is restricted is the type of aircraft — a ministerial order bans the noisiest Chapter-3 jets (cumulative margin under 13 EPNdB) and all older Chapter-2 aircraft between 22:00 and 06:00. So night flights happen, but the loudest aircraft are kept out of that window. See the curfew section above for the full detail.
- Which way do the runways at LYS point, and how does that change the noise?
- Both runways run almost exactly north-south (designated 17/35). In calm winds the airport prefers a 'face-north' configuration — departures off runway 35L and arrivals onto 35R — so departures climb north over Pusignan and the Anthon plain while arrivals descend from the south over Grenay and the Saint-Quentin-Fallavier corridor. When southerly winds arrive, the whole pattern flips to runway 17 and the arrival and departure ends swap. The live map above shows which direction is in use.
- How far from Lyon-Saint Exupéry do you need to be to avoid aircraft noise?
- Because the airport sits ~20 km east of Lyon on the flat Plaine de l'Est, the city itself gets little direct overflight — the noise footprint is concentrated on the ring of communes within about 8-10 km of the runways along the north-south axis. Moving even a few kilometres east or west of the centreline (rather than further north or south) makes a large difference, since the two parallel streams keep the loud band relatively narrow.
- How do I report aircraft noise at Lyon airport?
- Aéroports de Lyon runs a public flight-tracking and complaint system (CONSTAS/Casper) where residents can look up individual flights and file complaints; there is also an environmental mediator for the airport. National sanctions for breaches of the night restrictions are handled separately by ACNUSA, the French airport-noise authority. Links are in the sources below.
- Is Colombier-Saugnieu loud, and why?
- Yes — Colombier-Saugnieu is the commune the airport actually sits in, so as well as overflights it gets constant ground noise: taxiing aircraft, engine run-ups, and sideline noise from departures accelerating down the runways. It also catches low turning traffic. It's one of the most consistently affected communes around LYS. Use the pin-drop tool to check a specific address within it.
- Does this map show every aircraft over Lyon?
- It reflects aircraft broadcasting a standard position signal, which covers essentially all commercial jets and most business and freight traffic using Lyon-Saint Exupéry. A small amount of light general-aviation and military traffic may not appear, but for the airline and cargo flights that drive the noise you hear, coverage is effectively complete.
