Hobart Flight Path Noise Map – Hobart Airport (HBA)
Aircraft noise around Hobart in October 2026
Loudest neighborhoods near Hobart: Seven Mile Beach, Cambridge, Primrose Sands. Quietest: Dodges Ferry, Connellys Marsh, Richmond, Sandford, Bellerive. Busiest around 1 PM local time averaging 74 flights/day. Source: Flight Path Noise monitoring data, 30 days to 2026-10-08.
Does Hobart Airport have a curfew?
No — Hobart is curfew-free (24-hour operation).
Hobart Airport is curfew-free with no legislated night-flying restriction — only the federally-leased airports (Sydney, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Essendon) have legislated curfews. The airport’s peninsula location is cited as enabling 24-hour operation, and the operator has publicly opposed any curfew or movement cap. Most movements run roughly 6 AM to 11 PM in practice. Note that a temporary nightly closure (about 10 PM to 6 AM) was in force during runway-strengthening works from late 2024 into early 2025, but that was a works restriction, not a permanent curfew.
Hobart Airport (HBA/YMHB) sits at Cambridge on a narrow peninsula about 17 km east-north-east of central Hobart, hemmed in by Frederick Henry Bay, Pitt Water and the Coal River estuary. That geography means nearly every arrival and departure is funnelled out over water rather than over dense housing — the airport’s own argument for staying curfew-free. With a single runway, 12/30, the noise story is really a north-west versus south-east story. The defining recent issue is the satellite-based Runway 30 RNP-AR “short approach” introduced in November 2019, which concentrated arrival tracks over the coast east of the field and triggered a surge of complaints, a Post-Implementation Review, a Noise Abatement Procedure, a 2024 community survey and Aircraft Noise Ombudsman scrutiny. For a small-city airport, Hobart has one of Australia’s more contested flight-path histories.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
Hobart has just one runway — 12/30, 2,727 m long and 45 m wide, asphalt, aligned north-west to south-east. It was extended by about 500 m in 2017–18 and is Code E, so it can take wide-body aircraft. The Runway 12 threshold is at the NW end (aircraft land toward the south-east, over Cambridge and the Coal River valley); the Runway 30 threshold is at the SE end (aircraft land toward the north-west, in over the coast). Runway 30 arrivals drive most of the community noise concern.
The key correction to a common assumption: the headline overflown community is not Seven Mile Beach but the band further east. Seven Mile Beach sits right at the Runway 30 threshold, under the last kilometre of final, and is used as a noise-monitoring spot — but the concentrated, complaint-driving low-altitude tracks run over Carlton, Primrose Sands and Forcett, where jets pass under about 3,000 ft.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primrose Sands | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Core Runway 30 short-approach corridor with Carlton and Forcett; jets under ~3,000 ft |
| Seven Mile Beach | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Right at the Runway 30 threshold under the last ~1 km of final |
| Cambridge | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Off the Runway 12 (NW) end, under low ops on that direction |
| Acton Park | ✈︎✈︎ | Under turning Runway 30 approach tracks |
| Sorell | ✈︎✈︎ | Under inland long (RNAV) arrivals and Coal River valley overflight |
| Midway Point | ✈︎✈︎ | Across Pitt Water; circuit and Runway 12-direction over-water tracks |
| Lauderdale | ✈︎✈︎ | Outer edge of the Runway 30 arrival fan |
| Cremorne | ✈︎✈︎ | Spit beside Frederick Henry Bay near the over-water approach line |
| Dodges Ferry | ✈︎ | Occasional wider arrival tracks; off the core corridor |
| Connellys Marsh | ✈︎ | Long-approach monitoring site; higher-altitude inland arrivals |
| Richmond | ✈︎ | Coal River valley; mostly higher cruise/transition tracks |
| Sandford | ✈︎ | Peripheral exposure from wide Runway 30 turns only |
| Bellerive | ✈︎ | Eastern-shore suburb off-corridor given over-water routing |
If aircraft noise is a primary concern, the quieter side of the ledger is the eastern shore of Hobart proper (Bellerive), the inland Coal River valley villages (Richmond), and areas south of the field (Sandford) — all largely off the main approach lines thanks to the over-water routing. The areas to scrutinise are the short-approach band east of the runway (Carlton, Primrose Sands, Forcett) and the immediate threshold areas. If you’re looking at a specific property, drop a pin on the map above.
Flight patterns and runway use
The peninsula geometry dominates everything. Whatever the wind or direction of operation, Airservices routes aircraft over Frederick Henry Bay, Pitt Water and the surrounding bays wherever possible — which is exactly why the airport markets itself as able to run curfew-free without a legislated night restriction.
The most sensitive corridor is arrivals to Runway 30 (landing toward the north-west). Two options exist here:
- The RNP-AR / visual “short approach”, which turns in tightly over the coast and tracks over Carlton, Primrose Sands and Forcett at low altitude. This is the concentrated, complaint-driving path.
- The longer RNAV “long approach”, routed further inland and east toward Connellys Marsh and over the Sorell side, keeping aircraft higher for longer.
Airservices introduced the satellite-based instrument procedures on 7 November 2019, concentrating these tracks. A Post-Implementation Review followed, and Airservices developed a Runway 30 Noise Abatement Procedure (NAP) to share the load between the coastal short approach and the inland long approach. The path there was bumpy: Airservices initially decided in 2023 not to proceed with the NAP trial, the CEO requested further work, and only later was a trial run and the procedure implemented. The operative NAP is broadly time-based — directing Runway 30 arrivals onto the longer RNAV approach during sensitive hours unless exempt — rather than a fixed percentage split. A further proposal (Recommendation 4) would shift the RNP-AR track a few kilometres eastward, with a preferred design option released in late 2025.
Departures, and operations in the opposite (Runway 12) direction, are generally taken out over water toward the bays, which keeps continuous overflight of the densest Clarence-area suburbs limited. The route-density layer on the map above shows the pattern clearly: a bright, concentrated arrival band off the south-east end over the coast, a secondary inland arc for the long approach, and over-water tracks fanning toward Pitt Water and Frederick Henry Bay.
When is it quietest?
Hobart is curfew-free, so unlike Sydney there’s no guaranteed overnight silence — but in practice the schedule does most of the work:
- Overnight (roughly 11 PM – 6 AM): few movements. The terminal opens around 4 AM and closes around 10.30 PM, and there’s an informal late-evening cut-off in airline scheduling. It is, however, scheduling — not a regulatory curfew — so the occasional late or early movement can occur.
- Early morning (6 AM – 8 AM): the morning departure bank to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane builds quickly.
- Daytime (8 AM – 6 PM): steady mainline jet traffic, the bulk of the day’s movements.
- Evening (6 PM – 10 PM): arrival-heavy as flights return; this is when the Runway 30 approach question matters most for the eastern communities, and exactly the window the time-based Noise Abatement Procedure targets.
Wind and the choice between the short and long Runway 30 approaches both matter as much as time of day. On a given evening, whether you’re under concentrated low overflight or higher inland tracks can depend on which approach is in use. For a temporary period from late 2024 into early 2025, a nightly closure of about 10 PM – 6 AM applied during runway-strengthening works — a one-off works restriction rather than a permanent rule.

How to check noise at your specific address
The map above answers “is this spot loud?” in three steps:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
- Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.
The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) make the single-runway pattern obvious — a concentrated arrival band over the coast east of the field, an inland long-approach arc, and over-water tracks toward the bays. Addresses on the eastern shore, in the Coal River valley, or south of the field will mostly land in the quieter zone; the short-approach band (Carlton, Primrose Sands, Forcett) and the threshold areas (Seven Mile Beach, Cambridge) are where the exposure concentrates.
If you want to report noise rather than just check it, complaints go to Airservices Australia’s Noise Complaints and Information Service on 1800 802 584 (or 1300 302 240), with escalation available to the Aircraft Noise Ombudsman, which has already investigated the Hobart flight-path changes.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Seven Mile Beach loud with planes?
- Seven Mile Beach sits right at the Runway 30 threshold, so it is under the last kilometre or so of final approach when aircraft land toward the north-west, and it is used as a noise-monitoring and aircraft-spotting location. But the concentrated, complaint-driving overflight from the Runway 30 short approach actually runs further east over Carlton, Primrose Sands and Forcett, where jets pass under about 3,000 ft. Drop a pin on the map above to see the exact count and altitude profile for your street.
- What is the Runway 30 RNP-AR short approach and why did it cause complaints?
- On 7 November 2019 Airservices Australia introduced new satellite-based instrument procedures at Hobart, including an RNP-AR "short approach" to Runway 30. This concentrated arrival tracks into a narrow band over the coast east of the field — over Carlton, Primrose Sands and Forcett — and triggered a surge of complaints, a Post-Implementation Review, a Noise Abatement Procedure, a 2024 community survey and Aircraft Noise Ombudsman scrutiny.
- Is Primrose Sands affected by Hobart Airport flight paths?
- Yes. Primrose Sands, along with Carlton, Carlton River and Forcett, lies under the contested low-altitude Runway 30 RNP-AR short-approach corridor and is a designated noise-monitoring site. This band — not Seven Mile Beach — is the core short-approach noise community, with jets often passing under about 3,000 ft. Use the pin-drop tool above to check your specific address.
- Does Sorell get aircraft noise?
- Sorell sits north-east of the field under the longer, inland RNAV arrival routing to Runway 30 and the Coal River valley overflight. It is more affected by the "long approach" option than the short approach, and Sorell Council has been an active voice on the flight-path issue, including running a 2024 community survey. Aircraft here are generally higher than over the short-approach corridor.
- What is the Runway 30 Noise Abatement Procedure?
- After the 2019 changes and a Post-Implementation Review, Airservices developed a Runway 30 Noise Abatement Procedure (NAP) to share arrival noise between the coastal short approach and the inland long approach. The path to it was not smooth — Airservices initially decided not to proceed with the trial in 2023 before further work and a later trial led to implementation. The operative procedure is broadly time-based, directing Runway 30 arrivals onto the longer RNAV approach during sensitive hours unless exempt, to spread the load.
- How do I report aircraft noise at Hobart Airport?
- Submit complaints to Airservices Australia's Noise Complaints and Information Service (NCIS) on 1800 802 584 (freecall) or 1300 302 240, or online. If you are dissatisfied with how Airservices handles your complaint or the flight-path process, you can escalate to the Aircraft Noise Ombudsman (ANO), which has investigated the Hobart flight-path changes.
- Which Hobart areas are quietest for aircraft noise?
- Because most traffic is routed out over Frederick Henry Bay and Pitt Water, much of eastern-shore Hobart — Bellerive, Sandford, and villages like Richmond in the Coal River valley — sits off the core corridors and only catches occasional higher-altitude overflight. The most consistently affected areas are the Runway 30 short-approach band (Carlton, Primrose Sands, Forcett), the threshold area at Seven Mile Beach, and Cambridge off the opposite runway end.
