DFW Flight Path Noise Map – Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
Aircraft noise around DFW in October 2026
Loudest neighborhoods near DFW: Irving, Euless, Grapevine, Coppell. Quietest: Bedford, Hurst, North Arlington. Busiest around 9 AM local time averaging 2674 flights/day. Source: Flight Path Noise monitoring data, 30 days to 2026-10-18.
Does DFW Airport have a curfew?
No — DFW is a 24/7 airport with no night curfew.
DFW operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with no curfew, no noise-level limits and no mandatory nighttime runway restrictions — and overnight activity can be substantial because cargo carriers concentrate their flying after midnight. The airport says it coordinates with the FAA to use noise-sensitive flight paths overnight where possible, but that is informal practice, not a rule. The only mandatory noise measure is a departure procedure — turbojets hold runway heading to 0.5 NM, then the assigned departure heading for 5 NM, before turning on course. If you have read about an 11 PM – 6 AM restriction “in Dallas”, that refers to Dallas Love Field (DAL), a separate airport — and even there the program is a voluntary, lease-based arrangement to minimize scheduled overnight departures, not a binding curfew.
Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW/KDFW) was purpose-built in 1974 on more than 17,000 acres of open prairie between the two cities — a footprint larger than Manhattan — precisely so its runways could sit far from homes. Half a century of Metroplex growth has since wrapped suburbs around every side of it. Seven runways, including five parallel north–south strips and two diagonals, feed American Airlines’ largest hub with roughly 2,000 operations a day, and the airport runs in “south flow” about two-thirds of the time. That puts arrival streams over Lewisville, Flower Mound, Coppell and Grapevine and departure climb-outs over Irving, Euless and Grand Prairie — reversing when a norther blows through. DFW never closes, and its noise corridors were locked into 1980s land-use planning, so many homes under the paths carry avigation easements on their deeds.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
DFW’s airfield spans four cities — Grapevine, Irving, Euless and Coppell — across two counties, so the closest-in communities aren’t merely near the airport; they share a boundary with it. The dominant noise pattern is a long north–south band aligned with the five parallel runways, plus two shorter diagonal bands from the 13/31 runways angled northwest and southeast.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Irving | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Under south-flow departures and north-flow finals — hit in both directions |
| Euless | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Abuts the southwest corner; 18L departures and 36L/36R arrivals |
| Grapevine | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Airport’s north end is inside city limits; low finals and climb-outs |
| Coppell | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Under east-side finals (17C/17L) in south flow |
| Flower Mound | ✈︎✈︎ | 18R finals at ~2,000–3,000 ft in south flow |
| Southlake | ✈︎✈︎ | 13R diagonal approach “noise cone” from the northwest |
| Lewisville | ✈︎✈︎ | Extended east-side finals at ~3,000 ft |
| Colleyville | ✈︎✈︎ | 13R arrivals and north-flow 31L departures |
| Grand Prairie | ✈︎✈︎ | Extended south corridor; climbing departures |
| Las Colinas | ✈︎✈︎ | Departure turns and north-flow 31R arrivals |
| Bedford | ✈︎ | Off-corridor; turning departures at altitude |
| Hurst | ✈︎ | Laterally offset from the main flows |
| North Arlington | ✈︎ | High overflight after departures fan out |
The practical takeaway for house-hunters: exposure at DFW is about corridor alignment, not distance. Bedford sits closer to the field than Flower Mound but is markedly quieter, because it falls in the gap between the north–south parallels and the diagonal bands. Conversely, Lewisville is 17 km out and still gets a steady arrival conveyor at 3,000 ft in south flow. Irving deserves special mention as the one community exposed in both flow directions — departures overhead most days, finals overhead when the wind flips. If you’re comparing specific streets, drop a pin on the map above; exposure can change meaningfully within a couple of kilometers.
Flight patterns and runway use
DFW has seven runways: five parallel north–south runways (four of them 4,000 m-class — 17R/35L, 17C/35C, 18L/36R, 18R/36L — plus the 2,591 m outer 17L/35R) and two diagonals (13R/31L, 2,835 m west; 13L/31R, 2,743 m east). Because North Texas winds are southerly most of the year, FAA capacity-profile data shows the airport in south-flow configurations about two-thirds of operating hours. The workhorse setup — arrivals on 13R, 17C, 17L and 18R with departures on 17R and 18L — accounts for roughly 37% of all hours by itself.
In south flow, arrivals descend from the north: east-side traffic over Lewisville and Coppell onto 17C/17L, west-side traffic over Flower Mound and western Grapevine onto 18R, and a diagonal stream approaching from the northwest over Southlake onto 13R — the corridor Southlake formally calls its “noise cone”. Departures off the inner runways (17R east, 18L west) climb south over Irving, Euless and Grand Prairie before fanning out toward their on-course headings.
In north flow (roughly a fifth of hours, typically behind cold fronts), everything reverses: arrivals come in from the south over Irving and Grand Prairie onto 31R, 35C, 35R and 36L, while departures on 31L, 35L and 36R climb north over Grapevine, Southlake, Colleyville and Flower Mound.
Two structural noise measures apply. First, a mandatory departure procedure: turbojets maintain runway heading to 0.5 NM, then hold the assigned departure heading for 5 NM before turning — which keeps climb-outs inside defined corridors rather than spreading turns over random neighborhoods. Second, those corridors were written into regional land-use planning in the 1980s, with avigation easements recorded on the deeds of many homes built under them since. DFW monitors compliance with a network of roughly 35 permanent noise monitors across nine cities and three counties, correlated with FAA radar data.
The route-density layer on the map above makes the geometry obvious: a broad, bright north–south spine through the mid-cities, with the two diagonal bands reaching toward Southlake in the northwest and Las Colinas in the southeast.
When is it quietest?
There is no curfew to shape the schedule, so DFW’s noise profile is driven by hub banking and wind rather than by rules:
- Early morning (5 AM – 7 AM): the first departure push builds quickly; corridor communities south of the field (Irving, Euless) hear it first in south flow.
- Daytime (7 AM – 9 PM): American’s hub runs arrival and departure banks through the day, so corridor traffic is sustained rather than concentrated in one or two peaks. Expect steady activity with brief lulls between banks.
- Evening (9 PM – midnight): passenger traffic tapers, but doesn’t stop.
- Overnight (midnight – 5 AM): quieter than daytime but far from silent — cargo carriers concentrate flying after midnight, and DFW says it coordinates with the FAA to use noise-sensitive paths overnight where possible. That’s informal practice, not a restriction.
The bigger variable is wind. A southerly regime can hold for weeks, keeping the same neighborhoods under arrivals; then a front passes, DFW flips to north flow, and communities like Southlake, Colleyville and Flower Mound — which had been under gentler arrival descents or nothing at all — get departure climb-outs instead. If your street seems loud “only sometimes”, flow direction is almost always the reason. The hourly profile in the pin-drop report above shows how your address behaves across both patterns.
How to check noise at your specific address
The map above answers “how loud is this spot?” in three steps:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
- Read the noise report that opens in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.
The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) show DFW’s signature pattern at a glance — the wide north–south spine over the mid-cities and the two diagonals. If you’re weighing a purchase in Grapevine, Coppell, Irving or Euless, check the hourly breakdown as well as the average: a street under a south-flow final can be near-silent in north flow and busy for days at a time when the wind holds. And if the property is in a 1980s-era corridor city like Southlake, pair the map with a title check for an avigation easement.
Frequently asked questions
- Why are planes so loud over Coppell?
- Coppell sits under DFW's east-side final-approach corridor. In south flow — the configuration DFW uses roughly two-thirds of the time — arrivals to runways 17C and 17L descend over Coppell on a steady conveyor, and the airport's northeast corner is actually inside Coppell city limits. When the wind flips to north flow, the arrivals move south of the field and Coppell gets departures climbing north instead. Drop a pin on the map above to see the counts for your street.
- Which cities near DFW are quietest for aircraft noise?
- The quietest nearby communities sit west and southwest of the main north–south corridors — Bedford, Hurst and North Arlington see aircraft several thousand feet up and laterally offset rather than runway-aligned overflight. The most consistently affected are Irving, Euless, Grapevine and Coppell, which line up with the runway ends. Flower Mound, Lewisville, Southlake, Colleyville and Grand Prairie fall in between, exposed mainly in one flow direction. Use the pin-drop tool above to compare specific addresses.
- Why do planes fly over Grapevine so often?
- The north end of DFW's airfield is inside Grapevine city limits, so there is no buffer at all — in south flow, arrivals to the 17s and 18R cross Grapevine on short final at low altitude, and in north flow, departures climb out directly overhead. Grapevine is one of the four cities (with Irving, Euless and Coppell) that DFW's 17,000-plus acres actually span.
- What does 'south flow' mean at DFW?
- Aircraft take off and land into the wind, and North Texas winds are southerly most of the year, so DFW points its traffic south about two-thirds of the time — that's south flow. Arrivals descend from the north over Lewisville, Flower Mound, Coppell, Grapevine and Southlake, while departures climb south over Irving, Euless and Grand Prairie. In north flow (roughly a fifth of the time, often behind cold fronts) the pattern reverses.
- Do homes near DFW have avigation easements?
- Many do. DFW's noise corridors were formalized in land-use planning in the 1980s, and in cities such as Southlake, homes built inside the corridor since the late 1980s carry avigation easements recorded on their deeds — a permanent right for aircraft to overfly the property. Flower Mound publishes an avigation-easement map, and it's worth checking a title report before buying under the corridors.
- How do I file a noise complaint about DFW aircraft?
- Contact the DFW Noise Compatibility Office via the airport's aircraft-noise page at dfwairport.com or the 24/7 noise complaint hotline at +1 972-973-3192. DFW correlates complaints with a network of about 35 permanent noise monitors across nine cities and three counties, matched against FAA radar data.
- Is DFW louder than Dallas Love Field for nearby residents?
- They affect different areas. DFW runs roughly 2,000 operations a day across seven runways with heavy widebody and overnight cargo traffic, while Love Field is a smaller, mostly-737 airport 20 km east, close to central Dallas. Neither has a mandatory curfew — Love Field has a voluntary program that minimizes scheduled departures between 11 PM and 6 AM, while DFW stays busy around the clock. Which is louder at your address depends entirely on which corridors you're under — check both on the map.
- Are planes louder over my house when a cold front comes through?
- Quite possibly — a 'blue norther' switches DFW into north flow, which moves departures over Grapevine, Southlake, Colleyville and Flower Mound and brings arrivals in from the south over Irving and Grand Prairie. If your neighborhood is normally quiet, a wind shift can suddenly put you under active traffic for hours or days until southerly winds return.
