Privacy policy
This policy explains what flightpathnoise.com collects when you use the site, why, and what you can do about it. "We" means flightpathnoise.com.

The short version
- There are no accounts, no passwords and no profiles.
- There are no ads and no ad networks. We never sell or rent your data.
- We use Google Analytics to count visits, and Cloudflare to deliver and protect the site.
- Your saved pins and settings stay in your browser.
- If you contact us, we keep what you send so we can reply.
Who we are
The site is run by flightpathnoise.com, an independent project. For any privacy question, email hello@flightpathnoise.com.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to see which pages people visit, how they found us, and roughly where they are and what device they use. We use it with Google's default privacy settings. Google Analytics does not store full IP addresses.
Google Analytics sets two first-party cookies, _ga and _ga_41TWKJ28RS, to tell one visit from another. They last up to two years. We use the reports only to improve the site, not for advertising.
To opt out, block cookies for this site in your browser, or use Google's opt-out add-on. Google's privacy policy explains what Google does with the data.
Cloudflare
Every request to the site passes through Cloudflare, which caches pages, blocks attacks and gives us traffic statistics. To do that, Cloudflare processes your IP address, browser details and the address of the page you asked for. Cloudflare may set strictly necessary security cookies, such as __cf_bm, to tell people from bots. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
Address search and your location
When you type in the address search box, your browser sends what you type straight to Google (the Google Places API) to suggest addresses and to find the coordinates of the one you pick. Google receives the text and your IP address. It does not pass through our server.
Your browser also keeps a count of how many lookups it made today, so we stay within our daily quota. That count is not sent to us.
The "locate me" button on airport maps only works if you click it and your browser asks you for permission. Your position is used to move the map and fetch a noise report for that point.
Noise reports
When you drop a pin or pick an address, your browser sends the point's latitude and longitude to our server to build the noise report. It does not send the address you typed. We do not store these coordinates against you or link them to any other data. They can sit for a short time in our server's cache and in the request logs described below.
What stays in your browser
Some things are saved in your browser's local storage so the site remembers them next time:
- your saved and recent pins, with their labels;
- your light or dark theme choice;
- recent noise reports, so they load faster;
- the daily address-lookup count;
- an unsent support message, kept only until you close the tab.
None of this is sent to us. You can delete it at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser settings.
When you share pins, they are written into the link, after the # sign. That part of a link is read by the browser and is not sent to our server. Anyone you give the link to can see the places in it.
Support form and email
The Support form lets you send us a message, a bug report or a feature request. We collect:
- your name and email address, and what you write;
- an image, if you attach one;
- the page you were on (without the part after #) and its title;
- your browser's user agent;
- for bug reports only: screen size, browser, language, time zone, theme, recent page errors, which map layers were on and how many pins you had saved (never where they are);
- a hashed (scrambled) version of your IP address, used only to stop spam by limiting how many messages one connection can send. We never store the IP address itself.
The form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to check that you are a person, not a bot. Turnstile looks at signals from your browser to do that.
We store your message in our database and forward it to Linear, the issue tracker we use to keep track of messages and reply to them. See Linear's privacy policy. Images are re-encoded first, which strips location and camera details, and are deleted from our server as soon as they reach Linear.
We keep messages while we deal with them and for a while afterwards in case you write back, then delete them from our database automatically after 12 months. Ask us and we will delete yours sooner, from our database and from Linear.
If you email hello@flightpathnoise.com directly, we keep the email in our inbox for the same reason, and delete it if you ask.
Report waitlist
Suburb pages let you join a waitlist for a detailed address report. We store your email address, the suburb you signed up from, the time, your browser user agent and a hashed (scrambled) version of your IP address to help us spot abuse. We never store the IP address itself.
We use your email only to tell you when the report launches. We keep it until then, or until you ask us to remove it, whichever comes first.
Server logs
Like most websites, our server and Cloudflare log each request: the IP address, the time, the address requested (for a noise report that includes the coordinates), the browser's user agent and the referring page. We use logs to keep the site secure, fix problems and plan capacity. Our server logs are deleted automatically, usually after about two weeks.
Who else receives data
We do not sell, rent or trade personal data. The only other companies that receive it are the services that run the site:
- Google: analytics and address search;
- Cloudflare: delivery, security and the Turnstile check;
- Linear: support messages;
- DigitalOcean: our server, in Singapore;
- OpenStreetMap: your browser loads map images from its tile servers.
These services may process data outside your country. We will also disclose information if the law requires it.
Links to other sites, such as our Buy Me a Coffee page, are covered by those sites' own policies.
Children
The site is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has sent us something, email us and we will delete it.
Your rights
You can ask us what we hold about you, ask for a copy, or ask us to correct or delete it. Email hello@flightpathnoise.com from the address you used, and we will reply within 30 days. We hold very little: in practice, support messages and waitlist emails.
Depending on where you live, you may have other rights, including the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update this page and the date at the top.
Governing law
This policy is governed by the laws of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
