Minneapolis Flight Path Noise Map – Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP)
Aircraft noise around Minneapolis in October 2026
Loudest neighborhoods near Minneapolis: Nokomis (East), Standish-Ericsson, Longfellow, Richfield (East), Bloomington (East). Quietest: Inver Grove Heights, Burnsville, Edina. Busiest around noon local time averaging 1203 flights/day. Source: Flight Path Noise monitoring data, 30 days to 2026-10-19.
Does Minneapolis Airport have a curfew?
No — MSP operates 24 hours; a voluntary agreement covers 10:30 PM – 6 AM.
MSP has no mandatory curfew, and federal law (the Airport Noise and Capacity Act of 1990) effectively prevents the Metropolitan Airports Commission from imposing one. Instead, a set of voluntary nighttime measures covers 10:30 PM to 6 AM — carriers have agreed to avoid scheduling noisier hushkitted aircraft at night where possible, all nighttime gate departures are pushed back by tug rather than powered back, and air traffic control applies a night-specific runway-use priority that concentrates flows over the industrial Eagan–Mendota Heights corridor and the Minnesota River when wind and demand allow. Cargo and some passenger operations do continue overnight, though traffic is thin — on average fewer than about 40 flights operate between 11 PM and 5:30 AM.
Minneapolis–Saint Paul International (MSP/KMSP) has one of the most consequential noise histories in US aviation. After Minneapolis, Richfield, Eagan and the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority sued the Metropolitan Airports Commission in 2005, a 2007 Consent Decree locked in sound insulation for homes in the 60–64 dB DNL contour — extending a program that has now invested more than $510 million across some 15,000 single-family homes and multi-family units since 1992, one of the largest residential soundproofing efforts in the country. The airport’s geometry splits the burden unevenly: the parallel runways prefer to funnel jets through the industrial Eagan–Mendota Heights corridor to the southeast, but north-flow operations put arrivals and departures directly over dense south Minneapolis neighborhoods like Nokomis, Longfellow and Standish-Ericsson. There is no mandatory curfew — only a voluntary airline agreement covering 10:30 PM to 6 AM.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
MSP sits in a pocket between Minneapolis, Richfield and Bloomington, with four runways pointing at different communities: parallel runways 12R/30L (10,000 ft) and 12L/30R (8,200 ft) aligned northwest–southeast, north–south runway 17/35 (8,000 ft, opened 2005), and crosswind runway 04/22 (11,006 ft — the longest, but last in priority). Which neighborhood gets the noise on a given day depends almost entirely on which flow the wind allows.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Nokomis (East) | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Under 12L/12R arrivals and 30L/30R departures; heart of the soundproofing zone |
| Standish-Ericsson | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Beneath north-flow climb-out and south-flow final approach |
| Longfellow | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Under 12L/12R arrival streams and 30R departures |
| Richfield (East) | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Abuts Runway 17/35’s west side; protected by turn restrictions |
| Bloomington (East) | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Under Runway 17 departures and 35 arrivals since 2005 |
| Mendota Heights | ✈︎✈︎ | Homes flank the industrial departure corridor’s edges |
| Eagan (North) | ✈︎✈︎ | Fanned 12L/12R departure tracks beyond the corridor |
| Highland Park (St. Paul) | ✈︎✈︎ | 30R departures turning east/north, 12L arrival traffic |
| Powderhorn Park | ✈︎✈︎ | Fanned north-flow departures, not direct overflights |
| Apple Valley | ✈︎✈︎ | Extended Runway 35 final at intermediate altitude |
| Inver Grove Heights | ✈︎ | Beyond the corridor exit; traffic climbed and dispersed |
| Burnsville | ✈︎ | River Departure tracks nearby but jets above 5,000 ft |
| Edina | ✈︎ | Off the main corridors west of Richfield |
The pattern to internalize: the parallel-runway axis runs northwest–southeast, so the high-exposure band stretches from south Minneapolis through the airport into Eagan and Mendota Heights, with a second north–south band from Runway 17/35 running down through east Bloomington toward Apple Valley. Areas perpendicular to those axes — Edina, most of St. Paul proper, Northeast Minneapolis — get dramatically less. If you’re weighing a house in Nokomis against one ten blocks west, drop a pin on the map above for both; the difference is often larger than the distance suggests.
Flight patterns and runway use
MSP is unusual in how formally its noise routing is codified. MAC and the FAA operate a Runway Use System (RUS) that ranks runway configurations by the population under them. First choice for departures is 12L/12R southeast into the Eagan–Mendota Heights corridor — a strip of industrial and commercial land immediately east of the airport with the lowest residential population of any adjacent area. First choice for arrivals is 30L/30R from over that same corridor. Monthly compliance with the corridor runs around 95%, and overall departure and arrival procedure compliance is reported near 99%.
Wind doesn’t always cooperate. Prevailing northwest winds force frequent north-flow operation — 30L/30R departures climbing straight over Nokomis, Standish-Ericsson and Longfellow, and 12L/12R arrivals descending over the same rooftops. This is the least-preferred configuration on paper and one of the most common in practice, which is why south Minneapolis anchors both the complaint statistics and the soundproofing map.
Runway 17/35 adds a third axis. Opened in October 2005 over objections from Richfield and Bloomington, it works one way in practice: Runway 17 for southbound departures down the Minnesota River valley, Runway 35 for arrivals from the south over Apple Valley and Bloomington. An FAA procedure requires 17 departures to hold runway heading until 3.03 DME before any westbound turn — a hard rule that shields Richfield’s homes just west of the runway — and a River Departure procedure routes eligible jets along the Minnesota River away from Bloomington’s densest areas. Crosswind runway 04/22 is the fallback of last resort, sending occasional traffic southwest toward Bloomington and Richfield’s edges or northeast toward St. Paul.
The supporting infrastructure is extensive by US standards: MAC’s MACNOMS system runs 39 permanent noise monitoring towers across the metro — among the largest such networks in the nation — and the commission publishes monthly runway-use and compliance reports. Ground-noise rules apply too: nighttime gate departures are pushed back by tug with no power-backs, and a cargo-ramp tug procedure shields Richfield homes west of 17/35.
When is it quietest?
MSP runs 24 hours with no mandatory curfew, so the daily rhythm is set by airline scheduling and the voluntary nighttime program:
- 10:30 PM – 6 AM (voluntary nighttime period): traffic thins sharply — on average fewer than about 40 flights operate between 11 PM and 5:30 AM, mostly cargo and late arrivals. ATC applies a night runway-use priority favoring the corridor and the river when wind allows, and tug-only pushbacks cut ground noise.
- 6 AM – 8 AM: the morning departure bank builds fast — Delta’s hub structure means waves of back-to-back departures.
- Mid-morning through afternoon: sustained hub traffic in arrival/departure banks rather than an even flow; expect pulses of 60–90 busy minutes.
- 5 PM – 8 PM: evening peak as arrival banks stack up.
- 9 PM – 10:30 PM: tapering departures and late arrivals.
The bigger variable is configuration, not clock time. A wind shift that flips the airport from south flow to north flow moves the noise from the Eagan–Mendota Heights corridor onto south Minneapolis within the hour — which is why the same address can have quiet weeks and loud weeks. Seasonal patterns matter too; Longfellow and Nokomis residents know north-flow stretches well. The pin-drop tool above shows the hourly profile for any address, averaged over real traffic.
How to check noise at your specific address
The map above answers “how loud is this block?” directly:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin on the exact location.
- Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.
The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) makes the parallel-runway band from south Minneapolis to Eagan obvious, along with the 17/35 spur south through Bloomington. The Route Density layer shows where the tracks actually concentrate — note how tightly departures hold the Eagan–Mendota Heights corridor versus how much north-flow traffic fans across south Minneapolis. If you’re comparing addresses in Nokomis, Longfellow, Richfield or east Bloomington, check both flows: a house that’s quiet in south flow can sit under a primary climb-out in north flow. For complaints or the sound-insulation program, the Metropolitan Airports Commission is the authority — 612-726-9411 or metroairports.org.
Frequently asked questions
- Why are planes flying over south Minneapolis?
- Wind direction. MSP's Runway Use System prefers to send jets southeast into the industrial Eagan–Mendota Heights corridor, but when winds come from the northwest the airport flips to north flow — 30L/30R departures climb out directly over Nokomis, Standish-Ericsson and Longfellow, and 12L/12R arrivals descend over the same neighborhoods. This least-preferred configuration is still heavily used because the prevailing winds demand it. Drop a pin on the map above to see how often traffic passes over your block.
- Which Minneapolis neighborhoods are quietest for aircraft noise?
- The quietest areas sit perpendicular to the parallel-runway axis — Edina and points west beyond Richfield, plus most of Northeast Minneapolis and the western suburbs. The most consistently affected neighborhoods are Nokomis, Standish-Ericsson and Longfellow in south Minneapolis, east Richfield, and east Bloomington. Use the pin-drop tool above to check a specific address before you buy or rent.
- What is the Eagan–Mendota Heights corridor?
- A strip of industrial and commercial land immediately southeast of the airport with the lowest residential population of any adjacent area. MSP's Runway Use System makes it the first choice for departures (off 12L/12R) and arrivals (onto 30L/30R), and monthly compliance with the corridor runs around 95%. Homes in Mendota Heights and northern Eagan that flank the corridor's edges still hear off-track and fanned departures.
- Does my home qualify for MSP sound insulation?
- The Metropolitan Airports Commission has invested more than $510 million mitigating noise in some 15,000 single-family homes and multi-family units since 1992 — one of the largest residential soundproofing programs in the country. A 2007 Consent Decree extended eligibility to homes in the 60–64 dB DNL contour. Eligibility is contour-based and updated over time, so check MAC's noise mitigation program page for current boundaries.
- How do I file an airplane noise complaint for MSP?
- Complaints go to the Metropolitan Airports Commission's noise program office — online via metroairports.org's noise complaint form or by phone at 612-726-9411. MAC also publishes monthly reports on runway use, corridor compliance and complaint statistics, and operates one of the nation's largest permanent noise-monitoring networks (39 towers) to back them up.
- Why does Bloomington get airplane noise from Runway 17/35?
- Runway 17/35, MSP's north–south runway, opened in October 2005 over objections from Richfield and Bloomington. Runway 17 handles southbound departures over the Minnesota River valley toward Bloomington and Burnsville, and Runway 35 handles arrivals from the south over Apple Valley and Bloomington. An FAA procedure requires 17 departures to hold runway heading until 3.03 DME before any westbound turn, which shields Richfield but keeps tracks over the river and Bloomington's east side.
- Does this map include all aircraft at MSP?
- Effectively yes for what you'll hear — airline and cargo jets at MSP have near-complete ADS-B coverage, so the heatmap and route-density layers reflect real traffic. A small amount of general-aviation traffic from reliever fields like St. Paul Downtown (Holman Field), Flying Cloud or Airlake may be missing, but those aircraft don't operate from MSP itself.
