Does Copenhagen Airport have a curfew?

No — Copenhagen has no formal curfew.

Copenhagen does not have a strict curfew but operates under noise-abatement procedures with restricted operations between 11 PM and 6 AM. The southern over-water runway 22L is preferred for night operations because its corridor passes over the Øresund rather than over populated areas. Commercial flights continue overnight, particularly cargo and trans-Atlantic operations, but the volume is lower than during the day.

Copenhagen Airport at Kastrup (CPH/EKCH) is Scandinavia’s busiest airport — around 30 million passengers a year on three runways, sitting just 8 km south of the city center on Amager island. The airport’s natural orientation routes much of the traffic over the Øresund (the strait between Denmark and Sweden), keeping arrival and departure noise off the central Copenhagen districts. Central Copenhagen north of the harbor — Indre By, Vesterbro, Nørrebro, Østerbro, Frederiksberg — is essentially aircraft-noise-free. The affected zone is concentrated on southern Amager: Tårnby, Dragør, and the Amager island’s southern neighborhoods.

Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t

CPH has three runways arranged in a triangle: 04R/22L (the main north-south runway, 3,600 m), 04L/22R (also north-south, shorter), and 12/30 (east-west). The main pair (04/22) handles most traffic; the cross runway 12/30 is used for crosswinds and to spread noise across multiple corridors.

Area Aircraft noise Why
Kastrup ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Airport-adjacent; runway 22 corridor
Tårnby ✈︎✈︎✈︎ North-west of airport; multiple corridors
Dragør ✈︎✈︎✈︎ South-east of airport; runway 04 arrival
Sundbyvester ✈︎✈︎ Amager residential under corridor
Ørestad ✈︎✈︎ Modern Amager dev; lateral noise
Sundbyøster ✈︎✈︎ Amager north under approach altitude
Christianshavn ✈︎ Amager north; aircraft at altitude
Indre By ✈︎ Historic center; clear
Vesterbro ✈︎ Trendy district; off corridor
Nørrebro ✈︎ Multicultural; clear
Frederiksberg ✈︎ Independent municipality; clear
Malmö (SE) ✈︎ Across Øresund; outside footprint

The practical move at Copenhagen is north of the harbor — the entire central Copenhagen north of the inner harbor sits clear of the corridor. Christianshavn on Amager catches modest altitude overflight but is mostly tolerable. The affected zone is southern Amager (Tårnby and Dragør municipalities, plus the southern parts of the Amager island within Copenhagen).

Flight patterns and runway use

CPH uses runway 04 or 22 based on wind direction. With prevailing westerly to north-westerly winds (most common), the airport operates on runway 22L/22R — arrivals from the north over the Øresund and Amager, departures to the south over the Øresund. Both directions route mostly over water.

With easterly winds the operation reverses to runway 04L/ 04R — arrivals from the south over the Øresund (which puts descents over Dragør at low altitude), departures to the north over Amager and toward Sweden. Less common but more impactful on Dragør.

The cross runway 12/30 is used when winds favor east-west operations. When 12 is in use, departures climb out east over the Øresund toward Sweden; when 30 is in use, arrivals approach from over Sweden, descending west over the strait.

The route-density layer on the map above shows the natural over-water bias: bright corridors extending south and east over the Øresund, with most of the activity beyond the immediate airport area appearing over water rather than over populated areas. The brightest section on land is over Tårnby and Dragør.

When is it quietest?

CPH’s noise-abatement procedures shape the noise profile:

A note on the Øresund Bridge

The Øresund Bridge between Copenhagen and Malmö (opened 2000) has made commuting between the two cities common — many expats live in Malmö (cheaper) and work in Copenhagen. From an aircraft-noise perspective, Malmö sits clearly outside CPH’s corridor — the over-water approach corridors stay south of Malmö’s residential areas. If you’re considering Malmö for cost reasons, you don’t need to factor CPH airport noise into your neighborhood selection.

How to check noise at your specific address

The map above is the answer to “is this spot loud?” Three steps:

  1. Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
  2. Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
  3. Read the noise report that opens in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.

For Amager addresses, the configuration-specific impact matters significantly — Tårnby is heavily affected in 22-config, less so in 04-config. Check both. Most Copenhagen non-Amager addresses will show flat green profiles.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there aircraft noise around Copenhagen Airport?
Copenhagen Airport (CPH/EKCH, also called Kastrup) is Scandinavia's busiest airport with around 30 million passengers per year, sitting 8 km south of the Copenhagen city center on Amager island. The airport has three runways arranged in a triangular configuration. The runway alignment naturally routes much traffic over the Øresund (the strait between Denmark and Sweden), which keeps noise off populated areas where possible. The corridor still affects Tårnby, Kastrup, Dragør, and the southern Amager neighborhoods. Central Copenhagen north of the harbor sits mostly clear.
Which Copenhagen neighborhoods are quietest for aircraft noise?
Central Copenhagen north of the harbor — Indre By (city center), Vesterbro, Nørrebro, Østerbro, Frederiksberg — sits well clear of the main corridors and only catches high-altitude overflight. Christianshavn (on Amager but north of the airport) catches some overflight at altitude but is mostly tolerable. The most affected areas are the Amager municipalities immediately south: Tårnby and Dragør, plus the southern parts of the Amager island within Copenhagen city (Sundbyvester, Sundbyøster, Ørestad).
Does Copenhagen use over-water approaches?
Yes — Copenhagen's runways are oriented so that most arrivals approach from over the Øresund (the water between Denmark and Sweden), and most departures climb out either south over the same water or east toward Sweden. This natural over-water routing is one of the airport's main noise-management features. When wind conditions force overland operations, the noise impact on Tårnby, Dragør, and the southern Amager neighborhoods increases significantly.
Is Christianshavn loud from planes?
Mostly no — Christianshavn sits ~7 km north of CPH on Amager island, well outside the main corridor. Aircraft pass overhead at higher altitudes on certain configurations, but the noise is mostly modest. The neighborhood's main noise issues are road traffic on the bridges and the inner harbor's activity, not aircraft. Drop a pin on the map above to confirm your specific street.
How does Copenhagen compare to Stockholm Arlanda or Oslo?
Copenhagen has more urban impact than Stockholm Arlanda because CPH is much closer to the city (8 km vs. ARN's 37 km). However, CPH's over-water routing keeps the impact more focused on Amager than at Arlanda's overland corridors through northern Stockholm suburbs. Oslo (OSL) is 50 km north of Oslo and has minimal urban impact. Of the three Scandinavian capitals, Copenhagen has the most consistent airport noise for residents, but the affected zone is smaller and more defined than at non-curfew European airports like Madrid or Schiphol.
How do I report aircraft noise in Copenhagen?
Submit complaints to Copenhagen Airport (Københavns Lufthavn) via cph.dk. The Danish Transport, Construction and Housing Authority (Trafikstyrelsen) handles regulatory complaints. Each affected municipality (Tårnby Kommune, Dragør Kommune) operates its own noise complaint channel and aggregates resident complaints for the airport's quarterly community meetings.
Does coverage on this map include all aircraft?
Yes — commercial fleets at Copenhagen have near-100% ADS-B coverage. The heatmap and density layers reflect actual traffic accurately. General-aviation traffic from Roskilde Airport (RKE) and other smaller fields doesn't operate from CPH and doesn't affect the main corridors.
