Does Cape Town Airport have a curfew?

No — no operating curfew (only a full-length-departure rule for jets at night).

Not in the usual sense. There is a national South African rule that between 22:00 and 06:00 local time (2000–0400 UTC) no jet may take off from a runway/taxiway intersection — meaning jets must use the full runway length at night. That is a full-length-departure requirement, not a take-off ban or operating curfew: jets can and do depart overnight. There is no documented arrivals curfew, noise quota or movement cap at the airport.

Cape Town International (CPT/FACT) sits on the sandy Cape Flats roughly 20 km east of the city centre, hemmed in by dense townships and northern suburbs rather than open countryside — so its noise footprint falls squarely over residential communities. The defining fact is the long primary runway 01/19, aligned almost exactly north-south, which concentrates the heaviest jet noise in a narrow corridor: to the north over the Bellville and Belhar approaches, and to the south over Nyanga, Gugulethu and toward Khayelitsha. Cape Town’s powerful summer south-easterly — the “Cape Doctor” — drives strong seasonal use of runway 19 for landings, while the short crosswind runway 16/34 takes lighter traffic when the wind is up. There is no formal noise-monitoring or flight-track system at the airport, and a major runway-realignment project now under way will shift this corridor in the coming years.

Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t

Cape Town runs one long primary runway, 01/19 (3,201 m × 61 m, asphalt), oriented almost due north-south, plus a shorter crosswind runway, 16/34 (1,701 m × 46 m), running north-west to south-east. The main runway handles all the large jet traffic; 16/34 is favoured by lighter aircraft and when the south-easter is blowing hard. Because 01/19 is so close to a straight north-south line, exposure depends almost entirely on how close your suburb sits to that single corridor.

Area Aircraft noise Why
Matroosfontein ✈︎✈︎✈︎ On the boundary north-west of the field, under low 01/19 traffic
Bonteheuwel ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Close in to the west, under turning and low-level jet tracks
Nyanga ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Beneath the southern departure climb-out off runway 19
Gugulethu ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Under the southern 19 departure / 01 approach corridor
Belhar ✈︎✈︎ Close but offset to the north-east of the centreline
Manenberg ✈︎✈︎ West of the southern climb-out; catches spreading tracks
Delft ✈︎✈︎ Just east of the corridor, not directly under the centreline
Bellville ✈︎✈︎ Northern extended approach to runway 19 at altitude
Parow ✈︎✈︎ Near the northern approach to descending 19 arrivals
Pinelands ✈︎ West of the corridor; only intermittent turning traffic
Langa ✈︎ West of the runways, largely off the main corridors
Goodwood ✈︎ North-northwest and off the 01/19 centreline
Khayelitsha ✈︎ South-east and well offset from the departure track
Mitchells Plain ✈︎ Well south and laterally offset; higher overflights only

If aircraft noise is a primary concern, the practical move in Cape Town is laterally away from the north-south line. Suburbs to the west-northwest such as Pinelands and Langa, and Goodwood to the north-northwest, sit clear of the main corridor and only catch occasional turning traffic. Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain, off to the south-east and south, hear only higher-altitude overflights. The consistently affected band is the cluster sitting on or beside the runway centreline — Matroosfontein, Bonteheuwel, Nyanga and Gugulethu. If you’re looking at property anywhere on the Cape Flats, drop a pin on the map above to see your specific street.

Flight patterns and runway use

Runway choice at Cape Town is driven by wind. The prevailing summer south-easterly (“Cape Doctor”) and the north-westerlies of winter dominate the year. The main runway 01/19 is the preferential runway, with the 19/01 direction designated for noise abatement under national procedures; the short 16/34 crosswind runway is used by lighter aircraft when the south-easter is strong.

Because 01/19 runs almost exactly north-south, the traffic splits cleanly by direction. Arrivals onto runway 19 descend from the north over Bellville, Parow and the northern suburbs, while departures off 19 climb out to the south over Nyanga and Gugulethu and on toward Khayelitsha. When the flow reverses onto runway 01, arrivals come from the south and departures climb out to the north — so the same suburbs alternate between approach noise and departure noise depending on the day’s wind.

South African noise-abatement departure procedures call for a staged climb: take-off power and flap held to 1,500 ft above ground, then a climb at V2+10 to 20 kt to 3,000 ft, with thrust reduced to climb power and flaps retracted on schedule above 3,000 ft. Engine run-ups are directed away from the terminal to the threshold of runway 34. There is no formal noise-monitoring system, flight-track monitoring, noise-level limit or movement quota documented for the airport.

The route-density layer on the map above shows this as a single bright band running north and south from the field, with comparatively little spread to the east or west. One forward-looking caveat: the major upgrade now under way will build a new, realigned main runway (about 3,500 m and shifted roughly 11 degrees), with construction running through the late 2020s. When it opens, approach and departure tracks will move and some suburbs will move into or out of the corridor.

When is it quietest?

Cape Town has no full operating curfew, but the national overnight rule and the daily traffic banks still shape when it’s loud:

Wind matters as much as the clock. A strong afternoon south-easter favours landings on 19 and pushes departures south; a winter north-wester can flip the whole operation onto 01, reversing which side of the field hears arrivals versus departures. For the hourly profile at your address, drop a pin on the map above.

How to check noise at your specific address

The map above answers “is this spot loud?” Three steps:

  1. Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
  2. Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
  3. Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.

The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) make the single north-south band obvious — it’s the clearest visual signature of any runway shape. Most addresses laterally offset from the 01/19 line (Pinelands, Langa, Goodwood, and the suburbs east and south-east of the field) fall into the quieter green zone, while the on-centreline band through Matroosfontein, Bonteheuwel, Nyanga and Gugulethu stands out as the most consistently affected. Because the planned runway realignment will shift that band in the coming years, it’s worth checking the live map rather than relying on today’s map of the corridor alone.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there so much aircraft noise in Belhar, Bonteheuwel and Nyanga?
Cape Town International's main runway, 01/19, runs almost exactly north-south, so the heaviest jet noise is squeezed into a narrow corridor rather than spread evenly. Suburbs along that line — Bonteheuwel and Matroosfontein close in to the north-west and west, Nyanga and Gugulethu under the southern climb-out — sit directly beneath low, loud traffic. Belhar is close but offset to the north-east of the centreline, so it catches noise without being directly underneath. Drop a pin on the map above to see your street's exposure.
Which Cape Town suburbs are quietest for aircraft noise?
Areas laterally offset from the north-south runway line fare best. To the west-northwest, Pinelands and Langa sit mostly off the main corridor; Goodwood to the north-northwest is largely clear of the centreline. Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain, well to the south-east and south, only get higher-altitude overflights. The suburbs directly along the 01/19 line — Matroosfontein, Bonteheuwel, Nyanga, Gugulethu — are the most affected.
Is Bellville under the Cape Town flight path?
Yes, when the airport is landing on runway 19. Bellville sits on the northern extended approach about 8 km out, so arriving jets descend over it at moderate altitude. It is busier when the prevailing summer south-easter (the 'Cape Doctor') drives landings onto 19. Use the pin-drop tool above to see how many flights pass over Bellville and at what height.
Why do planes fly over the northern suburbs some days and the Cape Flats townships on others?
It depends on wind. The main runway 01/19 is bidirectional. In the strong summer south-easterly, aircraft tend to land on 19 (approaching from the north over Bellville, Parow and Belhar) and depart to the south over Nyanga, Gugulethu and toward Khayelitsha. In north-westerly winter winds the flow reverses onto 01 — arrivals from the south, departures climbing out to the north. The short crosswind runway 16/34 takes lighter aircraft when the south-easter is strong.
How do I report aircraft noise in Cape Town?
Contact Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) at Cape Town International via Customer Care on +27 21 937 1200 or through the airport page at airports.co.za. Note there is no formal noise-monitoring or flight-track complaint system at the airport, so logged reports go to ACSA customer care rather than a dedicated noise office.
Will the airport upgrade change the flight paths over my suburb?
Yes, eventually. A multi-billion-rand upgrade now under way includes a realigned and extended main runway, shifted by roughly 11 degrees and lengthened to about 3,500 m, with construction running through the late 2020s. Once it opens, approach and departure tracks will move, changing which suburbs sit under the corridor. The map above reflects current operations on the existing 01/19 alignment.
Does this map include all aircraft over Cape Town?
It reflects ADS-B-tracked traffic, which covers the commercial jet fleet that drives most of the noise. Some light general-aviation aircraft may not be equipped and can be missing, but the airliner movements that define the 01/19 corridor are captured accurately.
