Stuttgart Flight Path Noise Map – Stuttgart Airport (STR)
Aircraft noise around Stuttgart in October 2026
Loudest neighborhoods near Stuttgart: Echterdingen (Leinfelden-Echterdingen), Bernhausen (Filderstadt), Stetten auf den Fildern (Leinfelden-Echterdingen), Denkendorf. Quietest: Nürtingen (Oberensingen/Hardt), Sielmingen (Filderstadt). Busiest around 1 PM local time averaging 339 flights/day. Source: Flight Path Noise monitoring data, 30 days to 2026-10-19.
Does Stuttgart Airport have a curfew?
Yes — a mandatory night ban. No take-offs 11 PM – 6 AM, no landings 11:30 PM – 6 AM.
Stuttgart Airport operates under a mandatory night-flight restriction written into its operating licence — not a voluntary scheme. Take-offs are prohibited between 11 PM and 6 AM local time, and landings between 11:30 PM and 6 AM. Delayed arrivals are tolerated until midnight, but only if the flight was scheduled to land before 11:30 PM. A short list of exceptions applies — overnight airmail flights meeting modern noise certification, medical, emergency and disaster-relief flights, calibration and survey flights, military movements, and quieter propeller aircraft subject to noise limits — and exempted night movements pay a steep noise surcharge on top of the airport’s noise-differentiated landing fees. In practice the Filder towns get a reliably quiet window every night from around midnight to 6 AM.
Stuttgart Airport (STR/EDDS) sits on the Filder plateau at Leinfelden-Echterdingen, roughly 380 m above sea level and a few hundred metres above the Stuttgart city basin — so the noise problem here belongs less to Stuttgart proper than to the tightly packed Filder towns ringing the single 07/25 runway: Echterdingen at the western threshold, Bernhausen literally across the fence, and the Esslingen-district villages under the eastern approach. Two things define the local picture. First, one of Europe’s stricter night regimes — take-offs end at 11 PM, landings at 11:30 PM (delayed arrivals tolerated to midnight), quiet until 6 AM. Second, the long-running fight over the TEDGO_NEU eastbound departure route, trialled in 2023–24 and made permanent in June 2024, which concentrated climb-out traffic over communities as far out as Nürtingen and triggered lawsuits and an organised complaint campaign.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
Stuttgart has a single concrete runway, 07/25, 3,345 m long and oriented east-northeast to west-southwest. That single axis makes the noise geography unusually legible: everything on or near the extended centreline is loud, everything off it drops away fast. The runway 07 threshold is displaced about 300 m because of the Weidacher Höhe terrain west of the field, which is part of why approaches from the southwest cross Echterdingen so low.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Echterdingen | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Abuts the runway 07 threshold; departures and easterly arrivals directly overhead |
| Bernhausen (Filderstadt) | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Across the southern fence; constant sideline and ground noise |
| Stetten auf den Fildern | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | On the western extended centreline; climb-outs and finals cross low |
| Denkendorf | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Under the runway 25 approach in the dominant westerly configuration |
| Neuhausen auf den Fildern | ✈︎✈︎ | Just south of the eastern corridor; TEDGO debate territory |
| Berkheim (Esslingen) | ✈︎✈︎ | Near the runway 25 arrival corridor on the plateau edge |
| Leinfelden | ✈︎✈︎ | North of the western climb-out track, slightly off-centreline |
| Plieningen (Stuttgart) | ✈︎✈︎ | Closest Stuttgart district; lateral and turning noise |
| Scharnhausen (Ostfildern) | ✈︎✈︎ | North of the eastern corridor on the Körsch valley edge |
| Steinenbronn | ✈︎✈︎ | Under the southwest departure extension and runway 07 long final |
| Wolfschlugen | ✈︎✈︎ | Under TEDGO eastbound departures turning south |
| Nürtingen (Oberensingen/Hardt) | ✈︎ | Under TEDGO but at higher altitude; traffic newly concentrated |
| Sielmingen (Filderstadt) | ✈︎ | Off the runway axis; ground and turning noise only |
The striking thing about Stuttgart is how little of the noise falls on Stuttgart itself. The city basin sits well below and north of the plateau, and only Plieningen — Stuttgart’s southernmost district, just north of the runway — gets meaningful exposure, mostly lateral rather than overflight. The exposure map is a Filder-towns story: if you are house-hunting in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Filderstadt, Denkendorf or the Esslingen plateau districts, the difference between an address on the centreline and one 1–2 km off it is large. Drop a pin on the map above to see the numbers for a specific street.
Flight patterns and runway use
South-westerly winds prevail on the Filder plateau, so westerly operation (runway 25) is the default configuration for the majority of the year. Arrivals descend from the east-northeast on the extended centreline — over the Neckar valley edge near Esslingen-Berkheim, then Denkendorf and past Neuhausen — while departures climb west-southwest directly over Echterdingen and Stetten auf den Fildern before turning on course.
In easterly operation (runway 07) the pattern reverses: arrivals come in low from the southwest over Steinenbronn, Musberg and Echterdingen onto the displaced threshold, and departures climb east over Denkendorf and Neuhausen. Because of the displaced threshold and terrain, runway 25 take-offs have about 3,045 m of the 3,345 m runway usable.
The most contested piece of airspace is the TEDGO_NEU standard departure route for eastbound runway 07 traffic. Proposed around 2021–22 at the initiative of airlines and planned by DFS, approved by the federal aviation office (BAF) in December 2022, it ran as a one-year trial from 23 February 2023 to 22 February 2024 and entered regular operation on 13 June 2024. The route turns departures south over Wolfschlugen toward the Nürtingen districts of Hardt and Oberensingen, with minimum crossing altitudes and steeper climb profiles for a share of lighter aircraft, and it raised eastbound route capacity from roughly 2–3 to up to 12 departures per hour. For residents southeast of the airport it moved concentrated traffic over areas that previously saw little, and it remains the focus of Esslingen-district protests and legal challenges.
Procedures are reviewed by the Fluglärmkommission (aircraft noise commission), where Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Filderstadt, Ostfildern, Esslingen, Stuttgart and other Filder municipalities sit, and the airport levies noise-differentiated landing charges with a night surcharge for the few exempt movements that operate in the restricted hours.
When is it quietest?
The mandatory night regime gives the Filder towns one of the more predictable quiet windows of any major German airport:
- 11 PM – 6 AM: take-offs banned from 11 PM, landings from 11:30 PM; delayed arrivals tolerated only to midnight. After midnight the plateau is effectively silent apart from rare exempt flights (airmail, medical, military, quieter props).
- 6 AM – 8 AM: the morning departure wave — the noisiest stretch of the day for Echterdingen and Stetten under westerly climb-outs.
- Mid-morning to mid-afternoon: steady but moderate traffic.
- Late afternoon – 9 PM: evening arrival and departure banks; Denkendorf and the eastern approach corridor busiest.
- 9 PM – 11:30 PM: traffic tapers as the last departures beat the 11 PM cutoff and late arrivals land before 11:30 PM.
Wind matters more than the clock for which side of the airport hears the noise. A switch from the default westerly to easterly operation moves departure noise from Echterdingen/Stetten to Denkendorf/Neuhausen and activates the TEDGO track toward Nürtingen. The pin-drop tool above shows the hourly profile for any address.
How to check noise at your specific address
The map above answers “how loud is this street?” in three steps:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin on the exact spot.
- Read the noise report in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.
The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) traces the single 07/25 axis cleanly, and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) makes the TEDGO turn southeast of the field easy to spot. Most addresses more than a couple of kilometres off the centreline — including nearly all of Stuttgart’s city basin — land in the quiet zone, while the plateau towns on the axis show exactly why the Fluglärmkommission exists. If a complaint is warranted, the Lärmschutzbeauftragter at the Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart is the official channel.
Frequently asked questions
- Why do so many planes fly over Leinfelden-Echterdingen?
- Stuttgart Airport's single runway 07/25 points straight at Echterdingen — the town sits a couple of hundred metres from the western threshold. In the dominant westerly configuration, departures climb out directly over Echterdingen and Stetten; when the wind swings east, arrivals descend over the same towns onto the displaced runway 07 threshold. Either way, Echterdingen is under traffic. Drop a pin on the map above to see the flight count for your street.
- What is the TEDGO_NEU flight route over Esslingen and Nürtingen?
- TEDGO_NEU is an alternative eastbound departure route from runway 07 that turns traffic south over Wolfschlugen and the Nürtingen districts of Hardt and Oberensingen. Proposed around 2021–22 and approved by the federal aviation authority (BAF) in December 2022, it ran as a trial from 23 February 2023 to 22 February 2024 and became a regular procedure on 13 June 2024. It raised eastbound route capacity from roughly 2–3 to up to 12 departures per hour and remains the focus of organised noise protests in the Esslingen district.
- Which towns near Stuttgart Airport are quietest?
- Areas off the runway 07/25 axis do far better. Sielmingen sits only 3 km away but is south of the runway axis and off the main corridors. Stuttgart's city basin — including most of the city centre — lies a few hundred metres below the Filder plateau and well north of the flight paths. The loudest places are on the extended centreline: Echterdingen and Stetten to the west, Denkendorf and Berkheim to the east, and Bernhausen right on the fence. Check any address with the pin-drop tool above.
- Is Filderstadt-Bernhausen loud from the airport?
- Yes — Bernhausen sits immediately across the southern airport boundary, so residents get sideline noise from take-off rolls, reverse thrust, taxiing and engine run-ups on top of close-in turning traffic. It is one of the highest-exposure areas around the airport even though it is not directly under the approach centreline.
- Which direction do planes take off from Stuttgart Airport?
- Wind decides. South-westerly winds prevail on the Filder plateau, so westerly operation on runway 25 is the default for most of the year — arrivals from the east-northeast over Denkendorf and the Esslingen plateau edge, departures climbing west-southwest over Echterdingen and Stetten. In easterly winds the pattern flips to runway 07: arrivals come in low from the southwest over Steinenbronn and Echterdingen, and departures climb east over Denkendorf and Neuhausen, some via the TEDGO route toward Nürtingen.
- How do I complain about aircraft noise from Stuttgart Airport?
- The official channel is the Lärmschutzbeauftragter (noise protection officer) for Stuttgart Airport at the Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart, which takes complaints and publishes information on flight-track and noise monitoring. The Fluglärmkommission — with Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Filderstadt, Ostfildern, Esslingen, Stuttgart and other Filder municipalities at the table — advises on procedures. A citizens' initiative, fluglaermstuttgart.de, also coordinates complaints about the TEDGO route.
- Does Stuttgart Airport have night flights at all?
- Only narrow exceptions. Take-offs are banned 11 PM – 6 AM and landings 11:30 PM – 6 AM under the operating licence, with delayed landings tolerated to midnight. Exempt categories — night airmail meeting modern noise certification, medical and disaster-relief flights, calibration flights, military movements and quieter propeller aircraft — can operate, and they pay a steep night noise surcharge. Most nights the plateau is effectively quiet from midnight to 6 AM.
- Why is the runway 07 threshold displaced at Stuttgart?
- Terrain. The Weidacher Höhe rises west of the field, so the runway 07 landing threshold is displaced about 300 m to keep the approach clear of it, and westbound (runway 25) take-offs have roughly 3,045 m of the 3,345 m runway usable. It's one reason approaches from the southwest cross Echterdingen noticeably low.
