Does Don Mueang Airport have a curfew?
No — Don Mueang has no formal curfew.
Don Mueang operates 24 hours a day and has no night curfew. As Thailand’s busiest low-cost-carrier hub it runs heavy banks of early-morning and late-night flights, so even the small hours are not fully quiet. The pin-drop tool above shows the hourly breakdown for any address.
Don Mueang is Bangkok’s original airport — one of the oldest continuously operating airports in the world, the city’s main international gateway from 1914 until Suvarnabhumi opened in 2006, and since 2012 reborn as the busiest low-cost-carrier hub in Thailand. That history matters for noise. Unlike Suvarnabhumi, which was built on open reclaimed marshland east of the city, Don Mueang sits in long-established, densely built northern Bangkok, hemmed in by the Vibhavadi Rangsit corridor, the Don Mueang Tollway and decades of housing that grew up around it. Its two parallel runways run almost due north–south, so arrivals and departures funnel low over the same residential strips every few minutes — and with no curfew, around the clock.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
Because Don Mueang’s runways are oriented north–south, the noise picture is shaped almost entirely by that axis. The areas directly off the runway ends take the lowest, loudest overflights, while areas to the side — even close ones — get off comparatively lightly.
To the north, Si Kan and the surrounding Don Mueang district sit under the 03 thresholds; to the south, Lak Si sits under the 21 thresholds. These three are the most aircraft-exposed neighborhoods around the airport, directly beneath low approaches and the start of departure climbs. Bang Khen, a little further south and slightly east of the centreline, is next.
The districts that flank the runways rather than sitting off their ends fare better. Sai Mai to the east and Pak Kret to the west are close to the field but lateral to the flight paths, so they hear turning departures and sideline noise more than direct overflights. Further out along the northern corridor, Lam Luk Ka and Rangsit sit roughly under the extended centreline but with aircraft already climbing or descending, while Mueang Ake, Chatuchak, Lat Phrao and Khlong Luang are far enough out — or far enough off-axis — that planes are well into climb or cruise and the noise is intermittent.
| Area | Exposure | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Don Mueang (Sanambin), Si Kan | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Wrapped around / north of the runway ends — constant low movements |
| Lak Si | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Directly under the southern thresholds in 21 flow |
| Bang Khen | ✈︎✈︎ | Under the southern track, slightly off the centreline |
| Sai Mai | ✈︎✈︎ | Beside the runways — sideline and turning noise |
| Lam Luk Ka, Rangsit | ✈︎✈︎ | Under the northern corridor but at climb/descent height |
| Pak Kret | ✈︎ | West of the north–south axis; lateral noise only |
| Mueang Ake, Chatuchak, Lat Phrao, Khlong Luang | ✈︎ | Far out or off-axis; aircraft at altitude |
Flight patterns and runway use
Don Mueang has two parallel runways: 03L/21R at 3,700 m and 03R/21L at 3,500 m, both oriented roughly 030°/210° — a north-north-east to south-south-west line. Which way the airport runs depends on the wind, and Bangkok’s wind flips with the monsoon: south-westerlies dominate the wet season (roughly May to October) and north-easterlies the cool, dry season (November to February). So on any given day the airport is in “03” flow (operating toward the north-north-east) or “21” flow (toward the south-south-west). Either way, the noise concentrates along the same north–south band — only the busier end shifts.
Traffic volume is what makes that band so noticeable. Don Mueang ran about 8,490 departures in August 2025 — roughly 270 a day — and at peak holiday periods handles well over 100,000 passengers daily, almost all of it low-cost carriers like Thai AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air. The Royal Thai Air Force also shares the field, which it owns. One quirk captures how tightly the operation sits inside the city: the Kantarat golf course occupies the strip between the two runways, and golfers are held back by a red light every time an aircraft lands.
When is it quietest?
The airport operates 24 hours with no curfew, so there is no period when overflights stop entirely. In practice the quietest stretch is roughly 1 AM to 5 AM, when scheduled movements thin out. But low-cost carriers lean hard on cheap early-morning and late-night slots, so the pre-dawn departure bank can start before 6 AM, and late arrivals run past midnight. If overnight quiet matters to you, the difference between an address off the north–south axis and one directly under it is far larger than any time-of-day effect — the pin-drop report’s hourly breakdown lets you check both.
How to check noise at your specific address
The map at the top of this page shows the overall noise and flight-density picture, but the most useful tool is the pin drop. Drop a pin on your home — or a place you are thinking of moving to — and the report tells you how many flights pass nearby, how loud they typically are, and how that activity splits across the hours of the day. For Don Mueang in particular, moving a pin a kilometre or two east or west of the runway line can change the picture dramatically, so it is worth checking your exact address rather than relying on the district name.
Frequently asked questions
- Which areas around Don Mueang get the most aircraft noise?
- The loudest spots sit off the ends of the two north–south runways — Si Kan and the Don Mueang side to the north, and Lak Si to the south. These areas are directly under low arrivals and departures. Sai Mai (east) and Pak Kret (west) sit beside the runways rather than under them, so they are noticeably quieter.
- How busy is Don Mueang Airport?
- Very. It handled roughly 8,490 departures in August 2025, about 270 a day, and on peak holiday periods sees well over 100,000 passengers daily. With movements clustered on two parallel runways, the result is a near-constant stream of aircraft over the same residential strip.
- Is Lak Si noisy because of the airport?
- Yes. Lak Si sits just south of the runway thresholds, so whenever the airport runs in 21 flow it lies directly under low approaches and departures. It is one of the most aircraft-exposed districts around Don Mueang. The map above shows how the noise falls across the district.
- How is Don Mueang different from Suvarnabhumi for noise?
- Suvarnabhumi was built on open reclaimed marshland east of Bangkok, so much of its noise falls on sparsely settled land. Don Mueang is the city's original airport, embedded in long-established, densely built northern Bangkok — its flight paths cross established neighborhoods, markets and condos, which is why the same traffic feels far closer here.
- When is Don Mueang quietest?
- The 1 AM to 5 AM window has the fewest movements, though the airport never fully closes. Daytime and the early-evening departure banks are the busiest. Use the hourly breakdown in the pin-drop report to see how that plays out at your address.
- What is the golf course between the runways?
- That is the Kantarat course on Royal Thai Air Force land, sitting in the strip between Don Mueang's two parallel runways. Golfers are held back by a red light whenever an aircraft lands — a vivid sign of just how tightly the airport is woven into its surroundings.
- How do I check the noise at my exact address?
- Use the pin-drop tool at the top of this page. Drop a pin on your home and it reports how many flights pass nearby, how loud they are, and how that splits across the hours of the day.
