Louisville Flight Path Noise Map – Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF)
Aircraft noise around Louisville in October 2026
Loudest neighborhoods near Louisville: Prestonia, Audubon Park, Highland Park, Yorktown North. Quietest: Shively, Newburg, Highview. Busiest around 10 AM local time averaging 661 flights/day. Source: Flight Path Noise monitoring data, 30 days to 2026-10-18.
Does Louisville Airport have a curfew?
No — SDF runs 24/7, and the UPS Worldport sort makes night its busiest time.
Louisville Muhammad Ali International has no curfew of any kind — no mandatory night hours, no movement caps, no aircraft-type or weekend restrictions. Because UPS Worldport sorts packages between the runways overnight, some of the airport’s busiest hours fall between roughly 10 PM and 5 AM, the reverse of most passenger airports. The only nighttime measure is a voluntary noise-abatement procedure called “contraflow,” in effect 10 PM to 7 AM — wind and weather permitting, aircraft both arrive from the south and depart to the south, keeping low-altitude flight tracks over the less-populated southern side of Jefferson County and away from the dense urban neighborhoods north of the field. Contraflow is advisory guidance that never overrides air traffic control, and it imposes no limits on how many flights can operate.
Louisville’s noise story is unlike almost any passenger airport of its size. SDF is the third-busiest cargo airport in the United States because UPS Worldport sits between its parallel runways, sorting over 400,000 packages an hour and launching roughly 300 UPS flights a day — with the heaviest freighter banks arriving and departing in the middle of the night. There is no curfew. Instead the airport relies on a voluntary nighttime “contraflow” procedure (10 PM – 7 AM) that asks aircraft to both arrive from and depart to the less-populated south, sparing the dense urban neighborhoods north of the field. SDF also carries the legacy of one of America’s largest airport noise relocations: some 1,581 homes in Standiford, Prestonia, Highland Park and other neighborhoods were cleared in the 1990s expansion, and the entire small city of Minor Lane Heights south of the field was relocated and renamed Heritage Creek in 2008.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
SDF runs two parallel north-south runways — 17R/35L (11,887 ft, the west parallel, extended in 2007 so long-haul UPS freighters could reach Asia nonstop) and 17L/35R (8,578 ft, the east parallel) — plus a crosswind runway 11/29 (7,251 ft) that sees far less use. Worldport occupies the ground between the parallels. The dominant traffic axis is north-south, which is why the noise map splits the county into a loud central corridor and much quieter east and west flanks.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Prestonia | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Off the north end of 17L; low daytime arrivals along Preston Highway |
| Audubon Park | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Almost on the 17L extended centerline; very low arrivals |
| Highland Park | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Remaining blocks sit beside the 17R threshold |
| Yorktown North | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Under the southwest fan of UPS night departures off the 17s |
| Germantown / Schnitzelburg | ✈︎✈︎ | Northern arrival stream along the Shelby Street corridor |
| Camp Taylor | ✈︎✈︎ | East of the 17L approach; arrivals plus eastbound departure turns |
| Beechmont | ✈︎✈︎ | West of the 17R centerline; offset overflight, occasional runway 29 use |
| Heritage Creek | ✈︎✈︎ | Relocated city still under the southern contraflow corridor |
| Okolona | ✈︎✈︎ | South departures turning east; night contraflow arrivals |
| Old Louisville | ✈︎✈︎ | Daytime finals from the north at moderate altitude |
| Fairdale | ✈︎✈︎ | Southern departure fan; night climb-outs at altitude |
| Shively | ✈︎ | Off the main corridors; mostly crosswind runway 11/29 traffic |
| Newburg | ✈︎ | East of both parallels; only high-altitude turns |
| Highview | ✈︎ | Well off the primary tracks |
The practical pattern for house-hunters: the closer you are to the extended centerlines of the parallel runways — north through Prestonia, Audubon Park and Camp Taylor, or south through Okolona, Heritage Creek and Fairdale — the more you’ll hear. Moving east (Newburg, Highview, Jeffersontown direction) or west (Shively and beyond) buys quiet quickly, because SDF’s traffic stays tightly organized along the north-south axis. One Louisville peculiarity worth knowing: because night traffic is deliberately pushed south, a home in Audubon Park is loud by day but relatively quiet overnight, while a home near Okolona or Yorktown North gets its heaviest traffic precisely when residents are trying to sleep. Drop a pin on the map above to see which pattern your address falls into.
Flight patterns and runway use
SDF’s published flow is unusually predictable. Per the airport authority, except for a window from roughly 9 AM to 2 PM, normal daytime operations have aircraft arrive from the north — descending over Old Louisville, Germantown/Schnitzelburg, Audubon Park and the Preston Highway corridor to land south on the 17s — and depart to the south off the same runway ends.
At night the signature measure kicks in. From 10 PM to 7 AM, wind and weather permitting, the airport runs contraflow: aircraft arrive from the south (landing north on the 35s) and depart to the south (off the 17s), so both streams of low-altitude traffic stay over the more rural southern side of Jefferson County. It’s a voluntary procedure, subordinate to air traffic control, but it is why the dense urban neighborhoods north of the field get meaningful overnight relief despite the airport being busiest at night.
Contraflow’s limits show up southwest of the field. The airport’s Part 150 noise-mapping work found that during the overnight peak banks, UPS departures don’t consistently follow the published RNAV departure tracks — the sheer volume of near-simultaneous departures makes precise track-keeping impractical — so night climb-outs fan wider than charted, and the noise-exposure maps brought an affected community on the southwest side into the 65 DNL contour. Louisville Public Media has separately documented regular complaints from the Yorktown North subdivision off Garrison Road, directly under that departure fan. The FAA proposed satellite-based route refinements in 2023; airport leaders said the changes would reduce noise, but the FAA’s own screening showed no measurable noise change.
The crosswind runway 11/29 is a secondary player — departures off 29 head west-northwest toward Shively, and arrivals to 11 approach from the northwest. Sound-insulation eligibility under the LRAA’s QuieterHome program has centered on the Preston Highway and Shelby Street corridors north and northeast of the field.
When is it quietest?
SDF’s daily rhythm is inverted from a normal passenger airport, because the UPS Worldport sort drives some of the airport’s busiest hours overnight:
- Late evening into the night (roughly 10 PM – 5 AM): the heaviest freighter activity, as inbound UPS banks arrive, the sort runs, and outbound banks depart. Under contraflow this traffic concentrates over the southern side of the county — Okolona, Heritage Creek, Fairdale and the Yorktown North area — while the north side gets relative relief.
- Early morning (6 AM – 9 AM): passenger departures ramp up alongside the tail of the outbound freighter push.
- Mid-morning to early afternoon (9 AM – 2 PM): the airport’s published exception window, when the standard north-arrival/south-departure flow doesn’t necessarily apply; passenger traffic is steady but the freighter fleet is largely elsewhere in the network. For most neighborhoods this is the calmest stretch of the day.
- Afternoon and evening (2 PM – 10 PM): steady passenger operations, with arrivals descending over the northern neighborhoods.
The upshot: if you live north of the field, your noise is mostly a daytime phenomenon; if you live south or southwest, the night banks are the issue — and no curfew protects that window. Wind can override everything, since contraflow only runs when conditions permit; on nights when it can’t, traffic reverts to whatever flow the wind dictates. How to check noise at your specific address
The map above answers “how loud is this spot?” in three steps:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
- Read the noise report that opens in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.
The hourly breakdown matters more in Louisville than almost anywhere else — two addresses with similar daily totals can have opposite lives, one hearing daytime passenger arrivals and the other hearing 2 AM freighters. The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) shows the north-south corridor clearly, and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier tracks) makes the southern night fan visible. If you’re comparing addresses in Audubon Park, Camp Taylor, Okolona or the southwest subdivisions, check the night hours specifically before deciding.
Frequently asked questions
- Why are planes so loud over Louisville at night?
- Because SDF is UPS's worldwide air hub. UPS Worldport — a 5.2-million-square-foot sort facility between the airport's parallel runways — sorts over 400,000 packages an hour and launches roughly 300 flights a day, with the heaviest freighter banks arriving and departing overnight. Some of the airport's busiest hours fall between about 10 PM and 5 AM, which is the reverse of most passenger airports. There is no curfew; a voluntary contraflow procedure aims night traffic over the less-populated south side, so the north side of the county gets most of its relief at night while southern areas hear the freighter banks.
- Which Louisville neighborhoods have the most airport noise?
- Close-in areas off the north ends of the runways see the lowest, most frequent daytime overflight — Prestonia, Audubon Park and what remains of Highland Park, with Camp Taylor and Germantown/Schnitzelburg under the arrival stream slightly farther out. To the southwest, the Yorktown North subdivision hears UPS night departures fanning off the 17s. Areas well east (Newburg, Highview) or west (Shively) of the north-south corridors are the quietest. Drop a pin on the map above to see the exposure at your exact address.
- What is contraflow at SDF?
- Contraflow is the airport's signature nighttime noise-abatement procedure, in effect 10 PM to 7 AM. Wind and weather permitting, aircraft both arrive from the south (landing north on the 35s) and depart to the south (off the 17s), so low-altitude flight tracks stay over the less-populated southern side of Jefferson County instead of the dense urban core to the north. It is voluntary guidance and never overrides air traffic control instructions.
- Am I eligible for Louisville's QuieterHome sound insulation program?
- The Louisville Regional Airport Authority's QuieterHome program has centered on homes in the Preston Highway and Shelby Street corridors north and northeast of the field, based on the FAA-accepted noise exposure maps. Eligibility follows the mapped noise contours rather than neighborhood names, so check directly with the LRAA's Noise Compatibility Management office for your address.
- What happened to Minor Lane Heights?
- It was relocated. During the 1990s parallel-runway expansion, the airport authority acquired roughly 1,581 homes in Standiford, Prestonia, Highland Park and other neighborhoods — one of the largest airport noise relocations in US history. The entire small city of Minor Lane Heights, south of the field, was moved to a new site and renamed Heritage Creek in 2008. The new location still sits under the southern corridor used by nighttime contraflow arrivals.
- How do I report aircraft noise in Louisville?
- Noise complaints go to the Louisville Regional Airport Authority's Noise Compatibility Management program, which takes them through the public flight-tracking tool linked from its noise page at flylouisville.com. That tracker lets you identify the specific flight and file a complaint against it. Complaints feed the airport's Part 150 noise-compatibility planning.
- Does this map include the UPS cargo flights?
- Yes — the heatmap and route-density layers are built from actual position broadcasts, and UPS's large freighters (747s, MD-11s, 767s, A300s) are all equipped. Since heavy freighters are both the loudest and the most numerous aircraft at SDF, they dominate the noise picture, especially overnight. Drop a pin to see the hourly breakdown for your address, including the night hours.
- Is this the same airport as Bowman Field?
- No. Louisville has two airports — SDF (Louisville Muhammad Ali International, formerly Standiford Field) about 6–7 km south of downtown, and Bowman Field (LOU), a general-aviation field about 10 km east of downtown. This page covers SDF, which handles all airline and UPS cargo traffic. Bowman generates light-aircraft noise over eastern neighborhoods like Seneca Gardens, but its small propeller aircraft are a different noise problem entirely.
