Rome Ciampino Flight Path Noise Map – Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA)
Aircraft noise around Rome Ciampino in October 2026
Loudest neighborhoods near Rome Ciampino: Ciampino (centro), Santa Maria delle Mole (Marino), Cava dei Selci (Marino), Morena (Rome), Frattocchie (Marino). Quietest: Grottaferrata, Cinecittà (Rome), Frascati, Castel Gandolfo. Busiest around 9 AM local time averaging 251 flights/day. Source: Flight Path Noise monitoring data, 30 days to 2026-10-19.
Does Rome Ciampino Airport have a curfew?
Yes — a mandatory night ban from 11 PM to 6 AM, plus a hard cap of 65 scheduled commercial flights a day.
Ciampino has one of the toughest night regimes of any European airport. Italian Environment Ministry Decree 345/2018, implemented by ENAC ordinance 2/2019, bans all flights between 23:00 and 06:00 local except emergencies and force majeure, and caps traffic at a maximum of 65 scheduled commercial movements per day (plus up to 61 general-aviation and 2 state-flight movements — 128 total). Ryanair and Wizz Air fought the decree in court for years; the Council of State definitively upheld it in judgment n. 6976 of 18 October 2021. Enforcement remains a live grievance — residents’ monitoring of operator data recorded 653 arrivals after 23:00 in 2022 — and Ryanair has lobbied repeatedly to raise the cap back to 130 daily flights, so far without success.
Rome Ciampino “G.B. Pastine” Airport (CIA/LIRA) is Europe’s textbook case of a low-cost boom colliding with a city that grew right up to the fence. After Ryanair arrived in 2002, movements exploded over the dense suburbs of Ciampino and Marino, whose rooftops sit barely a kilometre from the single runway, just 12 km south-east of central Rome. Years of protests, more than 2,500 citizen complaints, an EU pilot investigation and epidemiological studies linking the noise to cardiovascular harm forced regulators to act — first a cut from roughly 138 to 100 daily flights in 2007, then Decree 345/2018 capping commercial traffic at 65 movements a day and banning flights from 23:00 to 06:00. Ryanair and Wizz Air fought the decree all the way to the Council of State, which definitively upheld it in October 2021. Because the field is also a military base and Italy’s state/VIP airport, government flights operate outside the cap — a layer of traffic no other Rome-area community deals with.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
Ciampino has a single runway, 15/33 (2,208 m), oriented north-west to south-east. That single axis makes the noise geography unusually simple and unusually harsh: runway 15 is the preferential runway during the day, so arrivals descend from the north-west over Rome’s south-eastern quarters, and departures climb out to the south-east directly over Marino’s suburbs. There is no second runway to rotate traffic away — the same streets get the same paths every day.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ciampino (centro) | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Pressed against the airport boundary; ground noise plus every cycle |
| Santa Maria delle Mole | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Directly under runway 15 climb-out; epicentre of the noise campaign |
| Cava dei Selci | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | On the runway 15 extended centreline; low departures at full power |
| Morena | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Under the runway 15 final approach at a few hundred metres |
| Frattocchie | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Via Appia under the departure corridor; named primary impact zone |
| Capannelle | ✈︎✈︎ | Under the approach at roughly 450–500 m |
| Quarto Miglio | ✈︎✈︎ | Beneath the approach corridor, Appia Antica side |
| Statuario | ✈︎✈︎ | On the north-west arrival axis in Municipio VII |
| Romanina | ✈︎✈︎ | East of centreline; approach traffic and turning departures |
| Marino (centro) | ✈︎✈︎ | Hill town overflown by turning south-east departures |
| Grottaferrata | ✈︎ | Off the main corridor; wide turns and holding traffic only |
| Cinecittà | ✈︎ | Outer edge of the approach; aircraft above ~600 m |
| Frascati | ✈︎ | Off the runway axis; occasional turning departures |
| Castel Gandolfo | ✈︎ | South of and off-axis from the departure corridor |
If aircraft noise is a primary concern, the practical move around Ciampino is off the 15/33 axis — the Castelli Romani towns of Grottaferrata, Frascati and Castel Gandolfo sit east and south of the corridors and mostly hear distant turning traffic. The corridor itself is narrow but intense: Santa Maria delle Mole, Cava dei Selci and Frattocchie to the south-east, and Morena, Capannelle and Quarto Miglio on the Rome side, take nearly all of it. If you’re looking at property anywhere along the Via Appia between Capannelle and Frattocchie, drop a pin on the map above and check the street first.
Flight patterns and runway use
Ciampino’s published preferential runway is runway 15 between 06:01 and 23:00 local — which, with the 23:00–06:00 flight ban, means runway 15 handles essentially all traffic in normal conditions. Runway 33 (the reciprocal, pointing north-west toward Morena and Capannelle on departure) is used only when weather requires it.
The daily pattern is therefore fixed: arrivals descend from the north-west over Cinecittà, Quarto Miglio, Statuario, Capannelle and Morena onto runway 15, and departures climb out south-east over Santa Maria delle Mole, Cava dei Selci and Frattocchie before turning onto their routes. The route-density layer on the map above shows this as a single bright band running north-west to south-east through the airport, with fans of turning departures spreading over Marino and the Castelli Romani.
Noise-abatement procedures apply to all civil jet traffic: continuous low-power/low-drag approaches with delayed gear and flap extension on runway 15, VFR approaches no shallower than the PAPI glide slope, take-off power and flaps held to 1,500 ft with thrust reduction by 3,000 ft. A trial of revised noise-abatement departure procedures for runway 15 ran from June 2025 to June 2026. Decree 345/2018 also requires that at least 50% of operations use newer, quieter aircraft types — in practice most of the schedule is flown by Ryanair’s relatively modern 737 fleet.
One pattern unique to Ciampino: state, VIP and military movements. The airport hosts the Italian Air Force’s 31st Wing and serves as Italy’s government flight base, and those operations sit outside the commercial cap. Government jets and military traffic can appear at hours and on profiles the scheduled traffic never uses.
When is it quietest?
The regulatory regime, not the airline schedule, defines Ciampino’s quiet hours:
- Night ban (11 PM – 6 AM): no flights except emergencies and force majeure under Decree 345/2018. Enforcement is imperfect — residents’ monitoring recorded 653 arrivals after 23:00 in 2022, mostly delayed inbound flights — but the overnight hours are far quieter than at any uncapped airport.
- 6 AM – 8 AM: the first departure bank. Ryanair’s early wave rolls out over Santa Maria delle Mole in quick succession.
- Daytime (8 AM – 9 PM): steady but capped. With a 65-movement commercial ceiling, traffic averages a handful of movements per hour rather than the continuous stream of a major hub.
- 9 PM – 11 PM: the evening arrival push, as inbound flights work to land before the ban. Delayed arrivals slipping past 23:00 are the residents’ committee’s biggest current grievance.
- State/VIP and military flights follow no schedule and can occur at any hour, including within the ban window under the state-flight allowance.
Because there is only one runway and one preferential direction, there is no wind-driven respite as at multi-runway airports — quiet comes from the clock, not the weather. For the hourly profile at your specific address, drop a pin on the map above.
How to check noise at your specific address
The map above is the answer to “is this street loud?” Three steps:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
- Read the noise report that opens in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.
The Noise Heatmap layer (orange/red = louder) and the Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) make Ciampino’s single-axis pattern immediately obvious: one narrow, intense band from Rome’s south-east quarters through the airport and out over Marino. Addresses even a couple of kilometres off that axis — Grottaferrata, Frascati, most of the Castelli Romani — typically land in the green/quiet zone, while anything on the Via Appia corridor between Capannelle and Frattocchie will show the full daily cycle. ARPA Lazio’s CRISTAL network publishes independent monthly acoustic bulletins for Ciampino if you want official measurements to compare.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is there so much aircraft noise around Ciampino Airport?
- Ciampino (CIA/LIRA) is a single-runway airport surrounded by dense suburbs — the towns of Ciampino and Marino grew right up to the fence, with rooftops barely a kilometre from the runway. After Ryanair made it a base in 2002, movements exploded, triggering years of protests, over 2,500 citizen complaints, an EU pilot investigation and epidemiological studies (SERA, SaMBa) that linked the noise to cardiovascular harm. Regulators cut the traffic from roughly 138 daily flights to 100 in 2007, then to a 65-per-day commercial cap under Decree 345/2018.
- Which areas near Ciampino are quietest for aircraft noise?
- Places off the runway 15/33 axis. Grottaferrata, Frascati and Castel Gandolfo in the Castelli Romani sit east or south of the corridors and mostly hear distant turning traffic. The loudest zones are Santa Maria delle Mole, Cava dei Selci and Frattocchie to the south-east (departures) and Morena, Capannelle and Quarto Miglio to the north-west (arrivals). Drop a pin on the map above to check any specific address.
- Do planes fly low over Santa Maria delle Mole?
- Yes — Santa Maria delle Mole sits directly under the runway 15 departure climb-out, about 3 km from the runway end, so jets pass over at low altitude and full climb power. It has been the epicentre of the anti-noise campaign led by the local residents' committee (CRIAAC). A trial of revised noise-abatement departure procedures for runway 15 ran from June 2025 to June 2026.
- Why do arrivals come in over Morena and Capannelle?
- Runway 15 is Ciampino's preferential runway for arrivals during the day (06:01–23:00 local), and its approach path runs from the north-west — straight over Rome's Morena, Capannelle, Quarto Miglio and Statuario districts. Aircraft descend through roughly 200–500 m over these areas on a standard approach. Runway 33 is used only when weather requires it.
- How many flights per day use Ciampino?
- Decree 345/2018 caps scheduled commercial traffic at 65 movements per day, with up to 61 general-aviation and 2 state-flight movements on top — a maximum of 128 total daily movements. That is roughly half the ~138 daily flights operating at the 2007 peak. Ryanair operates most of the commercial schedule and has lobbied to raise the cap back to 130, so far unsuccessfully.
- Does the flight cap apply to military and government flights?
- No. Ciampino is a joint civil/military airport — it hosts the Italian Air Force's 31st Wing and serves as Italy's state and VIP airport — and those movements operate outside the 65-per-day commercial cap. This adds a layer of traffic, often at irregular hours, that no other Rome-area community deals with.
- How do I complain about aircraft noise from Ciampino?
- Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) runs the airport noise office (adr.it, +39 06 65951), and ARPA Lazio provides independent monitoring through its CRISTAL regional centre, which publishes monthly acoustic bulletins for Ciampino. The local residents' committee (CRIAAC) also tracks violations of the night ban using operator data.
- Does this map include all aircraft at Ciampino?
- Commercial jets — the Ryanair 737s that dominate the schedule — have near-complete ADS-B coverage, so the heatmap and route-density layers reflect them accurately. Some military, state/VIP and older general-aviation movements may not broadcast position data and can be under-represented.
