Does Jandakot Airport have a curfew?
No — Jandakot has no formal curfew.
The airport operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and arriving or departing aircraft may operate at any hour. The only time restriction is on circuit training (see hours above). The broader Fly Neighbourly noise-abatement code, introduced in January 2000, is voluntary and not legally enforceable.
Jandakot Airport (JAD/YPJT) is Australia’s busiest general-aviation airport by movements — around 208,778 in the year to 30 June 2018 — sitting in the City of Cockburn in Perth’s southern suburbs, roughly 20 km south-south-west of Perth Airport (PER). Its noise story is unlike a typical airline hub: there are almost no jets, but an almost constant drone of small training aircraft. Roughly 60% of its ~200,000 yearly movements are circuit-training “touch-and-goes,” where student pilots fly the same tight ~5 km oval over the same suburbs again and again, all day. With no mandatory curfew and only a voluntary “Fly Neighbourly” code (introduced January 2000), residents under the crosswind and base legs of the circuit get the most repetitive low-altitude exposure. The frustration became national news in 2023 when a single Perth resident lodged 20,716 noise complaints — about 40% of all aircraft-noise complaints made in Australia that year and the single largest individual share, roughly one every six minutes during service hours.
Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t
Jandakot runs three asphalt runways: two parallel mains, 06L/24R (1,392 m) and 06R/24L (1,150 m), plus a cross runway 12/30 (1,508 m). The parallels are the workhorses. 06R/24L is the preferred circuit-training runway (and the runway for SHOP departures), with circuits flown to the south-east, so it generates the bulk of the repetitive low-level noise. 06L/24R, the longer parallel, is preferred for arrivals and other departures and bans repetitive low-level circuits. The 12/30 cross runway only comes into play when winds favour it, and its use swings noise onto a different set of suburbs.
| Area | Aircraft noise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Jandakot | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Immediately adjacent; overflown on departures, approaches and circuits |
| Banjup | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Directly under southern departures and the 06R/24L circuit |
| Atwell | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Beneath the southern circuit and climb-out from the training runway |
| Success | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Under southern training-area departure tracks and circuit legs |
| Cockburn Central | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | Named by Airservices among 06R/24L circuit-training suburbs |
| Canning Vale | ✈︎✈︎✈︎ | North-east, under the downwind and base legs; a major complaint source |
| Leeming | ✈︎✈︎ | Adjacent; exposure rises when 12/30 is in use |
| South Lake | ✈︎✈︎ | Affected during 12/30 and westerly operations |
| North Lake | ✈︎✈︎ | Under north-west departures and 12/30 flight paths |
| Piara Waters | ✈︎✈︎ | Outer edge of the south-east circuit; 12/30 operations |
| Hammond Park | ✈︎✈︎ | Just south of the circuit; southern departures and outbound training |
| Yangebup | ✈︎✈︎ | On the southern departure track toward the training area |
| Bibra Lake | ✈︎ | West of the field, off the main 06/24 corridors |
| Willetton | ✈︎ | North-east beyond the core circuit footprint |
If repetitive light-aircraft noise is the concern, the suburbs to avoid are the ones ringing the southern circuit — Jandakot, Banjup, Atwell, Success and Cockburn Central — plus Canning Vale to the north-east under the downwind and base legs. The lighter-exposure choices sit off the main circuit corridors: Bibra Lake to the west and Willetton to the north-east catch only intermittent, higher transiting traffic. Note that “quiet” here is conditional: when winds force 12/30 into use, suburbs like Leeming, South Lake, North Lake and Piara Waters that are otherwise calm pick up noticeably more activity. Drop a pin on the map above to see how your specific street fares across the different runway configurations.
Flight patterns and runway use
Runway selection is wind-driven — aircraft take off and land into wind — and Perth’s southern coastal-plain winds are commonly south-west to westerly through summer and more variable in winter, so the 06/24 parallels and the 12/30 cross runway all see regular use. 06R/24L is the preferred circuit-training and SHOP-departure runway with circuits flown to the south-east, which is why the southern suburbs and Canning Vale absorb the bulk of the repetitive noise. 06L/24R handles arrivals and other departures and prohibits repetitive low-level circuits.
Published departure tracks run north-west via the Fremantle golf course, south-east via Armadale, and south toward the training area via Yangebup and Thomsons Lake; arrivals route via Canning Bridge, Forrestdale Lake and Adventure World. Critically, there is no over-water routing of substance — unlike a coastal airline airport, Jandakot’s circuits and approaches are overland across residential Cockburn suburbs, which is the core of the complaint pattern.
Noise-abatement measures under the Fly Neighbourly code (and ERSA/DAP) ask pilots to keep circuits as compact as practicable, use full-length take-offs for heavier and twin aircraft, maximise climb height over residential areas, reduce engine revs after take-off, avoid repetitive formation circuits, and use different tracks at night. These are voluntary, not enforceable. When 12/30 is in use the circuit and approach footprint shifts onto Leeming, South Lake, North Lake and Piara Waters — a useful thing to know if you’re assessing a “quiet” suburb that only looks quiet under the usual 06/24 flow. The route-density layer on the map above makes the standing pattern visible: a dense southern and south-eastern circuit footprint, lighter north-west and northern departure bands, and a secondary set of tracks whenever 12/30 is active.
When is it quietest?
Because the dominant noise source is circuit training, Jandakot’s quiet windows are defined by the circuit-training time limits rather than by a curfew:
- Overnight (2230–0700 weekdays, 1800–0800 weekends): no circuit training. The relentless touch-and-go drone stops, though normal arrivals and departures may still operate at any hour — there is no curfew, so the airport is never formally closed.
- Weekday daytime (0700–2230): the busy window. Expect sustained, repetitive circuits over the southern suburbs and Canning Vale whenever 06R/24L is the active runway.
- Weekend daytime (0800–1800): circuit training allowed but over a shorter window, so weekend mornings before 8 AM and evenings after 6 PM are noticeably quieter than the equivalent weekday hours.
Weather is the other big variable. A shift to a wind that favours 12/30 can move the noise off the southern suburbs and onto Leeming, South Lake, North Lake and Piara Waters within a single afternoon — so a street that is calm most days can have busy spells. For your specific address, the pin-drop tool above shows the hourly profile.
How to check noise at your specific address
The map above answers “is this spot loud?” Three steps:
- Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
- Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
- Read the noise report in the sidebar: flights per day passing within 2 km, an hourly breakdown, and the surrounding density pattern.
The Route Density layer (purple/magenta = busier corridors) makes the southern and south-eastern circuit footprint obvious, while the Noise Heatmap layer highlights where the repetitive low-level training concentrates. Because Jandakot’s traffic is overland circuits rather than over-water jet routes, exposure is unusually sensitive to which runway is active — so check your pin against both the normal 06/24 flow and the 12/30 cross-runway scenario.
For the underlying tracks behind any address, Airservices Australia’s WebTrak lets you replay actual flights, and noise complaints go to the Noise Complaints and Information Service (NCIS) on 1800 802 584. The airport itself does not handle noise complaints — air traffic is a federal Airservices Australia responsibility.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Jandakot Airport loud?
- Not in the way an airline airport is — there are almost no jets. Instead Jandakot produces an almost constant drone of small training aircraft. Roughly 60% of its ~200,000 yearly movements are circuit-training touch-and-goes, where student pilots fly the same tight oval over the same suburbs all day. For residents under the circuit (Canning Vale, Banjup, Atwell, Success, Jandakot) the issue is repetition and low altitude rather than peak loudness.
- What are Jandakot's circuit-training hours?
- Circuit (touch-and-go) training is restricted to 0700–2230 Monday to Friday and 0800–1800 Saturday and Sunday, local WA time (UTC+8, no daylight saving). Outside those hours the repetitive circuit drone stops, though normal arrivals and departures can still operate at any time.
- Why are planes constantly flying over my house in Canning Vale?
- Canning Vale sits north-east of the field under the downwind and base legs of the training circuit, so when the preferred 06R/24L runway is in use you catch aircraft turning overhead again and again. Airservices reports the most complaints come from suburbs beneath the crosswind and base legs — Canning Vale is one of the most affected. Drop a pin on the map above to see your street's exposure.
- Which Jandakot suburbs are quietest for aircraft noise?
- Suburbs off the main 06/24 circuit corridors get the least repetitive exposure — Bibra Lake to the west and Willetton to the north-east see lighter, more intermittent traffic rather than constant circuits. The most affected are the suburbs ringing the southern circuit (Jandakot, Banjup, Atwell, Success, Cockburn Central) plus Canning Vale to the north-east.
- Why did Jandakot get 20,716 noise complaints from one person?
- In 2023 a single Perth resident lodged 20,716 aircraft-noise complaints — about 40% of all the aircraft-noise complaints made in Australia that year (51,589 total) and the single largest individual share, roughly one complaint every six minutes during service hours. It became national news and underscored how the relentless repetition of circuit training, not jet loudness, drives Jandakot's complaint pattern.
- How do I make an aircraft noise complaint about Jandakot?
- Contact Airservices Australia's Noise Complaints and Information Service (NCIS) online or by phone on 1800 802 584. Air traffic and noise reporting are a federal Airservices Australia responsibility, not the airport's. Airservices also runs WebTrak, which lets you replay actual flight tracks over your address.
- When does the 12/30 cross runway change who hears the noise?
- When winds favour the 12/30 cross runway, circuit and approach noise shifts off the southern suburbs and onto areas such as Leeming, South Lake, North Lake and Piara Waters. These suburbs are quieter under normal 06/24 operations but see noticeably more activity whenever 12/30 is in use.
