Does San Diego Airport have a curfew?

Partly — no departures 11:30 PM to 6:30 AM, but arrivals can land all night.

San Diego International has a mandatory departure curfew: aircraft may not take off between 11:30 PM and 6:30 AM. Arrivals are not restricted — planes can land 24 hours a day, so late-evening and overnight noise over the approach corridor (Balboa Park, Golden Hill, Bankers Hill) comes from delayed arrivals rather than departures. Exemptions cover medical emergencies and air-traffic-control delays. The airport authority’s Curfew Violation Review Panel reviews every late departure and fines airlines that break it without a local weather or mechanical reason: at its December 2025 meeting it reviewed 24 violations, penalised 10, and imposed $520,000 in fines of $10,000 to $70,000 each.

San Diego International Airport at Lindbergh Field (SAN/KSAN) operates on a single runway just 5 km from downtown San Diego, making it one of the busiest single-runway commercial airports in the world. The famous approach over Golden Hill, Balboa Park and Bankers Hill puts arrivals just a few hundred feet above apartment towers on the final mile. With ~240,000 movements per year squeezed into a single runway and a constrained corridor, the affected neighborhoods are some of the most consistently overflown urban areas in North America.

Which neighborhoods are quietest — and which aren’t

SAN has just one runway: 09/27, oriented east-west and constrained by terrain. Arrivals to runway 27 (the dominant configuration in prevailing westerly winds) approach from the east over downtown and Bankers Hill; departures on the same runway climb out west over Loma Portal and Point Loma. The single runway means there’s little variation — every flight uses the same narrow path.

Area Aircraft noise Why
Bankers Hill ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Last mile of the runway 27 approach, very low
Golden Hill ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Directly under the final approach
South Park ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Under the final approach
Mount Hope ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Under the approach further out
Loma Portal ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Under runway 27 departures, low altitude
Point Loma Heights ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Under the departure climb
Ocean Beach ✈︎✈︎✈︎ Departures cross the coast here
Little Italy ✈︎✈︎ Beside the runway’s east end
Coronado ✈︎✈︎ Military traffic from NAS North Island
Mission Hills ✈︎ Beside the corridor, not under it
Hillcrest ✈︎ North of the corridor
North Park ✈︎ Approach passes to the south
Downtown San Diego ✈︎ Approach passes just north of the core
Pacific Beach ✈︎ Off the SAN corridor
La Jolla ✈︎ Off corridor, occasional altitude only

The practical move at San Diego is anywhere off the two corridors — the approach from the east (Mount Hope → Golden Hill and South Park → Balboa Park → Bankers Hill) and the departure climb to the west (Loma Portal → Point Loma Heights → Ocean Beach). Neighborhoods a mile north of the approach, such as Mission Hills, Hillcrest and North Park, hear it but rarely have aircraft overhead. Drop a pin on the map above to see the exact street.

Flight patterns and runway use

SAN runs almost exclusively in runway 27 configuration — arrivals from the east, departures to the west — because prevailing winds favor it ~80% of the time. The famous steep visual approach passes over downtown buildings before continuing over Balboa Park and Bankers Hill to the runway.

In easterly wind conditions (less common, mostly Santa Ana events) the operation reverses to runway 09 — arrivals from the west over the Pacific, departures to the east over the corridor. This puts noise on the same neighborhoods but in the other direction, with departures rather than arrivals overhead.

The route-density layer on the map above shows the narrow single-corridor pattern: bright over Golden Hill, Balboa Park, Bankers Hill, Loma Portal and Point Loma, with rapid fall-off outside that band. The single runway makes the corridor much narrower than typical multi-runway hubs.

When is it quietest?

SAN’s curfew bans departures between 11:30 PM and 6:30 AM. Arrivals are allowed around the clock, which shapes the daily noise profile:

Compared with 24-hour airports like Los Angeles (LAX), which has no curfew, the west side of San Diego gets a genuinely quiet night. The east side, under the approach, does not.

For your specific address, drop a pin on the map above to see the hourly profile.

Our map vs the official noise contour map

The airport authority publishes official noise contours — lines of equal annual-average noise at 65, 70 and 75 dB CNEL — in its Part 150 Noise Exposure Maps and every Quarterly Noise Report (san.org/aircraft-noise). They are modelled, not measured, and they matter for two practical things: land-use rules and the Quieter Home Program, which sound-insulates eligible homes inside the 65 dB CNEL contour.

This map answers a different question. It is built from the flights actually observed overhead, so it shows where aircraft really fly, how many pass a given street each day, how low they are and at what hours. A home just outside the 65 dB contour can still sit under dozens of daily flights — check the street with a pin, and use the official contour only to see whether you qualify for insulation.

How to check noise at your specific address

The map above is the answer to “is this spot loud?” Three steps:

  1. Search your address or postcode in the bar at the bottom of the map.
  2. Drop a pin — click the location marker that appears.
  3. Read the noise report that opens in the sidebar: average daily noise (Leq), peak observed dB, flights per day passing within 2 km, and an hourly breakdown.

For the affected neighborhoods (Bankers Hill, Golden Hill, Loma Portal), street-level differences are significant — being one block east or west of the approach corridor can change peak dB by 10+ decibels. Always check the specific street.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there so much aircraft noise around San Diego Airport?
San Diego International (SAN/KSAN, also called Lindbergh Field) is one of the busiest single-runway commercial airports in the United States. Its single runway (09/27) sits just 5 km from downtown, so the final approach crosses dense neighborhoods at low altitude — Mount Hope, Golden Hill, South Park, Balboa Park and Bankers Hill — and departures climb straight out over Loma Portal, Point Loma Heights and Ocean Beach. With every flight funnelled onto one runway, those corridors are busy from the first departure at 6:30 AM until late evening.
Which San Diego neighborhoods are quietest for aircraft noise?
Neighborhoods north of the corridor — Mission Hills, Hillcrest, North Park, University Heights, Kensington — hear arrivals to the south but rarely have aircraft directly overhead. La Jolla and Pacific Beach are clear of SAN traffic, though Pacific Beach sees light aircraft and helicopters along the coast. The most affected are the neighborhoods directly under the runway 27 approach (Mount Hope, Golden Hill, South Park, Balboa Park, Bankers Hill) and under the departure climb (Loma Portal, Point Loma Heights, Ocean Beach).
Is Bankers Hill loud from planes?
Yes — Bankers Hill is famous in San Diego real estate for the dramatic low-altitude flyovers. The approach to runway 27 passes directly overhead at around 300-500 ft altitude, putting the aircraft visibly between balconies on high-rise apartments. Many residents accept the noise as a trade-off for the urban location, but if quiet is a priority, this is not the neighborhood. Drop a pin on the map above to see your specific building's exposure.
How does the famous San Diego approach work?
In the usual westerly winds, arrivals line up for runway 27 far to the east and descend along a straight line over Mount Hope, Golden Hill and South Park, cross Balboa Park, and pass just north of the downtown high-rises and over Bankers Hill in the last mile before touchdown. Because the runway sits in the middle of the city, the final few miles are flown low over houses and apartment towers — which is what makes the San Diego approach so distinctive.
How do I report aircraft noise in San Diego?
Submit complaints to the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority's noise office via san.org or by phone at 619-400-2799 (weekdays 8 AM – 5 PM), or through its WebTrak flight-tracking site. Complaints are logged by location and summarised in the airport's Quarterly Noise Reports.
Can planes land at San Diego Airport during the curfew?
Yes. San Diego's curfew only bans departures between 11:30 PM and 6:30 AM — arrivals are allowed 24 hours a day. Late-night noise over Balboa Park, Golden Hill and Bankers Hill therefore comes from delayed arrivals on the runway 27 approach. Airlines that take off during the curfew are reviewed by the airport's Curfew Violation Review Panel and fined unless weather, a mechanical problem or an air-traffic-control delay was to blame.
Where is the official San Diego Airport noise contour map?
The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority publishes official CNEL noise contours (65, 70 and 75 dB) in its Part 150 Noise Exposure Maps and in each Quarterly Noise Report, both on san.org/aircraft-noise. Those contours are modelled annual averages used for land-use rules and Quieter Home Program eligibility (homes inside the 65 dB CNEL contour). The map on this page is different: it is built from the flights actually observed overhead, so it shows where aircraft really fly day to day and lets you check a single street.
Does coverage on this map include all aircraft?
It includes every aircraft transmitting ADS-B inside the map area — not just airliners using Lindbergh Field. Commercial fleets have near-complete coverage. Traffic from nearby Montgomery-Gibbs Executive, MCAS Miramar and NAS North Island also appears where it passes through the area, which is why parts of Kearny Mesa, Serra Mesa and Coronado show activity unrelated to the SAN runway. Some military and light aircraft do not broadcast ADS-B and are undercounted.
Will Lindbergh Field be replaced or expanded?
The single-runway constraint has driven decades of discussion about a replacement airport, but no concrete plan has emerged. The current expansion plans focus on Terminal 1 modernization and capacity upgrades to the existing footprint. The geographic constraints (downtown to the east, Pacific to the west, naval facilities to the south) make expansion or relocation challenging. Lindbergh Field will remain San Diego's main commercial airport for the foreseeable future.
